Three times, Simon Peter had denied Jesus. Now, three times, the risen Christ gives Peter the opportunity to announce his love. Although Peter was distressed by the Lord s repeated question, ultimately this must have been a healing moment in Peter s life. He finally had the opportunity to assure Jesus that he loved him, thereby making up for his earlier failure and weakness on the night of the Crucifixion. Jesus death on the cross sufficed to forgive us of our sins. But his resurrection assures us that there is new life on the other side of our sinfulness. Just as Jesus had the power to conquer death, so too through his grace we have the power to conquer our sins. We can live a resurrected life, we can have a new beginning, just as Peter did that day at the Sea of Tiberias when he pledged his faith anew. This pledge of faith, it s interesting to note, also came with a kind of commission. Each time that Peter told the Lord he loved him, Jesus responded with a command: Feed my lambs, Tend my sheep, and Feed my sheep. Of course, we know that Jesus had already established Peter as the rock on which he built his church, as the first pope. Now, Jesus was emphasizing the connection between loving him the Good Shepherd and loving his people, his flock, his church. Peter s love for Christ was meant to be manifested in his love and care for the church, as is the case with every pope. But it s also true for every Christian. We are called not just to relish the gift of forgiveness and the grace of new life in Christ, but to take the next step of loving and serving those around us. -3-
4 Pastor s Pen St. Anthony of Padua Shrine The new Saint Anthony of Padua Shrine is now open. Situated in the old baptistery, there s a beautiful new Altar built by Joe Chiovarelli. On the Altar is a statue of Saint Anthony carved by the Demetz studio in Italy. Next to the statue is a reliquary The wood reliquary was also made by Joe Chiovarelli) containing authentic relics from the clothing of Saint Anthony in a beautiful metal reliquary. There is also a candle stand. Saint Anthony s intercession has provided comfort and care for thousands of people over the centuries, not to mention miracles and a lot of lost things that are now found. One day, in 1222, in the town of Forli, on the occasion of an ordination, a number of visiting Dominican friars were present, and there was some misunderstanding over who should preach. The Franciscans naturally expected that one of the Dominicans would occupy the pulpit, for they were renowned for their preaching; the Dominicans, on the other hand, had come unprepared, thinking that a Franciscan would be the homilist. In this quandary, the head of the hermitage, who had no one among his own humble friars suitable for the occasion, called upon Anthony, whom he suspected was most qualified, and entreated him to speak whatever the Holy Spirit should put into his mouth. Anthony objected but was overruled, and his sermon created a deep impression. Not only his rich voice and arresting manner, but the entire theme and substance of his discourse and his moving eloquence, held the attention of his hearers. Everyone was impressed with his knowledge of Scripture, acquired during his years as an Augustinian friar. At that point, Anthony was sent by Brother Gratian, the local Minister Provincial, to the Franciscan province of Romagna, based in Bologna. He soon came to the attention of the founder of the order, Francis of Assisi. Francis had held a strong distrust of the place of theological studies in the life of his brotherhood, fearing that it might lead to an abandonment of their commitment to a life of real poverty. In Anthony, however, he found a kindred spirit for his vision, who was also able to provide the teaching needed by young members of the order who might seek ordination. In 1224 he entrusted the pursuit of studies for any of his friars to the care of Anthony. Saint Anthony was canonized by Pope Gregory IX on 30 May 1232, at Spoleto, Italy, less than one year after his death. "The richness of spiritual teaching contained in the Sermons was so great that in [16 January] 1946 Venerable Pope Pius XII proclaimed Anthony a Doctor of the Church, attributing to him the title Doctor Evangelicus ["Evangelical Doctor"], since the freshness and beauty of the Gospel emerge from these writings." Our Sunday Visitor s 365 Days to Mercy app, free in the itunes and Google Play app stores, is designed to accompany you on a spiritual journey during the Jubilee Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis. -4-

12 Kinanira Parish P.O Box 43 Kisoro-Uganda March 11, 2016 Msgr Joseph Mirro Greetings from Kinanira Parish I write on behalf of Nyagisozi Catholic Centre Community dedicated to blessed Tereza of Calcutta. They are very grateful for the message we got from Fr. Vian that you and your parishioners are going to help us put up Nyagisozi Health Centre May the Almighty God reward you a hundredfold. So far the site is ready we shall start as soon as funds are available. Extend appreciation to all who are eager to help us. Let us remain united in spirit and prayer Sincerely Fr. Joseph Sebatwale Why Start a New Health Centre in the Area We want to bring quality health care near the people. At the present time they have no health care at all. We want to introduce a health care insurance plan to the area. It is a poor area with no cash crop. People live on subsistence farming. We want to provide preventive, curative and promotive health care. We want to reduce mortality and morbidity. The area is less than 2 kilometers from the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Many refugees come across the border to escape the strife in their homeland. The Health Centre would care for the refugees as well as the local people. Purposes and Identity We intend to offer curative, preventive, promotive and rehabilitative health care such as: clinical care, immunizations both static and integrated outreach, antenatal, deliveries, counseling, orphans support by training, AIDS educators, a Family Life program, training more community health educators, HIV testing and counseling, prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) services, and nutritional care. This unit will offer its services in fulfillment of the mission of the Catholic Church Health Services of Uganda as approved by the Uganda Catholic Episcopal conference in the Diocesan health policy of the Diocese of Kabale. The health unit will operate in line with government policies with the exception of those that contradict the Roman Catholic Code of ethics and health policy. 17 Catholic Ministries Appeal with any family, there are times when a brother or sister is in serious need and reaches out to us for help. Catholic Charities' Talbot House serves the needs of families in crisis due to substance abuse. As In 2008, Bill received a call from his son Michael who was away at medical school. Michael was in crisis addicted to drugs and plummeting out-of-control. Searching for a safe environment to get Michael help, Bill found Talbot House. At first Michael didn't want to stay but 22 days after he moved in Michael was a different person. Talbot House gave our son back to us. It's a wonderful resource. Michael fully credited Talbot House and his counselor with his recovery. Michael went back to medical school with the intention of working in the area of addiction medicine." Michael's life was cut short when, on the way to visit his grandmother, his car was hit head-on by an impaired driver. Inspired by his son's desire to help those with addiction, today Bill volunteers at Talbot House as a spiritual education counselor, helping residents address the topics and events that may be holding them back from recovery. Catholic Ministries Appeal P.O. Box 4000 Rockville Centre, NY x2 Michael said he owed his life to Talbot House. I know I belong here carrying on his work." -15-
