2 Pastor s Pen Former Court of Appeals judge says Child Victims Act shields public entities in lookback The proposed Child Victims Act creates two unequal classes of sexual abuse victims those who would be granted another opportunity to sue and those who would be granted no such opportunity, according to a former judge of New York State s top court. The Child Victims Act (A5885-A/S6575) bill, sponsored by Sen. Brad Hoylman and Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal, would shield public schools and municipalities from lawsuits for past sexual abuse claims while holding private schools, religious organizations and charities accountable, according to a new analysis authored by Susan Phillips Read, former Associate Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals, the state s highest court. The bill proposes to extend both the prospective civil and criminal statutes of limitations for claims of child sexual abuse. It would also create a controversial one-year window to revive time-barred claims of abuse from decades past. Whether this retroactive window applies to public institutions was the question Judge Read was asked to address in her brief. My answer is No, she stated unequivocally To illustrate her point, Judge Read wrote: For example, if this bill were enacted into law, a 34-year old man whose high school wrestling coach sexually abused him 20 years ago would not be time-barred from recovering damages from his high school if the man attended a private school and sued within the one-year window, but he would be precluded from recovering damages if he attended a public school instead of a private school. Richard E. Barnes, executive director of the New York State Catholic Conference, which solicited the analysis, said the Hoylman/ Rosenthal bill creates an indefensible double standard in its disparate treatment of public and private institutions. In claiming to remedy an injustice, Sen. Hoylman and Assembly Member Rosenthal would create a pernicious further injustice, one perpetrated by the state Legislature on many survivors. While the sponsors have professed that their bill does not shield public schools from exposure, Judge Read s comprehensive analysis clearly shows otherwise. Tragically, a child abused in a public school and a child abused in a private school is still a child abused. He or she should be entitled to identical legal remedies. We understand the sponsors desire to shield public schools and government agencies from potentially billions of dollars in liability, but that concern, while valid, cannot justify unequal treatment of survivors and public and private institutions. St. John Paul II noted that the family is the cradle of life and love (On the Lay Members of Christ s Faithful, 40). Yet unmet expectations and divergent priorities can cause tension in even the most loving family situations. This is true for us, and it was true for Jesus! In today s Gospel, Jesus has returned home to Nazareth. A large crowd gathered, and Jesus finds Himself facing stiff opposition from His family. This was likely Jesus large, extended family. The Semitic language has no specific words for extended relatives, so everyone is brother or sister. The entire clan has gotten wind of Jesus preaching, and they are not amused. They set out to seize Him, for they said, He is out of His mind. To make matters worse, the religious authorities even accuse Jesus of being possessed by a demon. It s a mess by any standards. The family s perspective is perhaps understandable. In Jewish culture, teachers and scribes underwent intensive schooling and apprenticeships, none of which Jesus had done. The family knew Jesus the carpenter, not Jesus the rabbi. For them, Jesus bold preaching threatened the reputation of their family! Jesus words to His family can seem controversial. Who are my mother and my brothers? Yet Jesus knows what He is about. He has always known He would be about the business of His Heavenly Father. And what is that business? It is the business of the new covenant and the Kingdom of God. In this Kingdom, we are all adopted sons and daughters of the King. Jesus begins, even now, to expand the perspective of His listeners. Being welcomed into this family does not depend on our families of birth or ethnic origin, but a wholehearted commitment to do the will of God. -5-

7 Youth Ministry NEW Cali, Columbia Mission The Youth Group and Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang have adopted 2 missions in Columbia, South America. After years of supporting these 2 special missions, both financially and materially, we have taken their needs into our own hands. The first mission involves the Nativity R.C. Church in a poor, abandoned and neglected area of Cali, Columbia. There, Pastor Fr. Saul Londono oversees his parish and all its ministries and outreach programs. The most important of these are a school and a soup kitchen that serves over 100 very impoverished students. These children need school supplies, clothing, vitamins, toiletries, first aid items, nutrition bars, sports equipment, board games like chess & checkers, cards and card games. The soup kitchen, which serves over 100 people a day, needs rice, oats, beans, grains and cooking and eating utensils. We will send money so Father can purchase food in Cali. 8 Religious Education The Religious Education Office will be closed for the summer Beginning 12:00 PM, June 13th. Our staff will be checking messages and returning phone calls as well as scheduling appointments throughout the summer. Please call and leave a message. Thank you. Young Stewards Day 2018 Team Chris Operation Service Dog: Amount collected $5, Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer was killed in action on July 21, 2007 in the province of Al Anbar, Iraq by a single bullet from the gun of an enemy sniper. Chris gave his life serving the country he loved. The I Did the Grid Run/Walk and Fun Run begins at the Elementary School Chris attended, Pulaski Rd. Elementary School. The participants run or walk through the grid with 31 turns wearing the names of four fallen service members on their bibs. The date of the I Did the Grid Walk/Run was chosen to fall on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend each year to encourage everyone to remember that this weekend is not about the beginning of summer, barbecues or the day the pool opens. It is a day to remember the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for each one of us so that we may live free. Money collected will sponsor a service dog and change the life of a returning veteran who was wounded and in need. A combat stress relief dog will provide emotional support for service members experiencing combat stress or PTSD. Congratulations to the children from our Religious Education Program. Enough money was collected this year to buy a new puppy. The puppy will be specially trained to help a veteran who might be in need of a little help upon returning home. 11 Children and Family Faith Formation Birthday Blessings Happy Birthday June children Childrens ministry is the foundation of the church and is the future of the church, Blessed is the church that is full of children and is able to take care of them by training them. proverbs 22:6 The word of God this Sunday God gave us the wonderful gift of freedom to choose. God made us to be children, not puppets. Created in God s image, we make our own choices. There is right and wrong, we can choose to love or hate, be nice or mean, good or bad, joyful or hateful, peaceful or angry; pray or not pray; generous or selfish, we can obey or disobey. Freedom of choice becomes a habit of mind. The seed of faith was given at their baptism, it must grow. As children grow, so does faith. Faith doesn t develop within a vacuum but in the family, school, church, and faith community. Take them to church every Sunday, pray as a family, give children a blessing every night before bed. It does not take long, but it makes an impact. Play worship songs and read stories about Jesus to them. -11-

We are often confronted with choices that appear to be good but in essence are not. We struggle with choosing good over evil and right from wrong. Conflicts often exist within, and we walk through life with a divided heart. We realize what is needed to live with God but find ourselves doing the exact opposite. As we gather with our brothers and sisters and seek God s gift of Christ in the Eucharist, may we not only be united with one another in faith but united with God within. All conflicts and divisions can cease, and we can act with a focused, strong, and determined heart. ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA St. Anthony, St. Anthony, come around! Something s lost that must be found! Did you learn this rhyme in childhood? St. Anthony of Padua is more than the patron saint for lost items. By his life, he shows a special interest in lost souls. St. Anthony was born to noble parents, but he preferred a simple life of faith to the riches of his childhood. He joined the Franciscan order in He quickly became known for his eloquence in preaching. He had a way of reaching all sorts, from nobles to clergy to those who had fallen away from the Catholic faith. In addition to preaching, St. Anthony organized supplies for the poor and negotiated release for prisoners of war between Italian city-states. However you or your loved ones feel lost this week, pray for St. Anthony s intercession! -20-
