Together we celebrate the liturgy in prayer and sacrament; we educate our children and adults in the faith; we support and reach out to those in need. We believe the Holy Spirit is calling us to continue: to love one another as Jesus loves us, to share the word of God and to serve both within and beyond our Parish family. 4 Pastor s Pen The Gift of the Magi Christmas and Year End Giving Ever since the Wise Men opened their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh before the infant Jesus, we have all wanted to present our own gifts to Him as well. Our hearts are so full of gratitude to God for the great gift of himself in the newborn Jesus, we want to show our gratitude by giving gifts to Him through his church. Many people use Christmas and the year end as a special time to give to St. Anthony of Padua Church and also positively impact their federal and state income taxes. Did you know that "charitable giving" is one of only a few tax deductions that has not been eliminated. Christmas and year end giving provide many advantages to you, the donor. All gifts made on or before December 31 are tax deductible for the tax year in which your gift is made. If you itemize your deductions, your gift will lessen your tax liability for the tax year in which your gift is made. If you have not itemized your deductions in past years, your Christmas gift may allow you to itemize and lower your tax bill (check with your tax advisor). Consider the "Carry Over Deduction." Depending on your age, income and the size of your gift, you may be able to "carry over" your charitable gift tax deduction to subsequent years. METHODS OF GIVING Many different, exciting and thought provoking forms of Christmas and year end giving are available, all of which are tax deductible. GIVING SECURITIES is perhaps the best way to make a Catholic gift of faith. You can save and give at the same time! Stocks, bonds, and even shares in mutual funds that have appreciated can be given and your deduction is for the full market value at the time the gift is made - not just your original cost for the securities. You can also save by paying no capital gains tax on the sale of the stock as you would if you sold the stock and held the cash. DEPRECIATED SECURITIES? You can sell stock that has declined in value and claim that loss on your tax return. Then, donate the cash from the sale of the stock and claim a charitable deduction on your tax return for the amount of the gift. A professional stock broker can assist you in making this type of gift. CASH - the most standard and familiar way to make a Christmas or year end gift. Simply write a check to make your gift. PROPERTY - both real estate and personal property qualify as charitable gifts that would benefit your parish through Christmas and year end giving. Consider real estate such as residences, land and buildings as well as antiques, jewelry, artwork, coin collections, or other collectibles. BUSINESS GIFTS - businesses can make gifts and receive tax deductions as well. Businesses can give gifts of inventory, equipment, materials and service as well as cash. If you own your own business, giving through your business is another way to benefit your parish and positively impact your taxes. LIFE INSURANCE - cash value in current or paid up life insurance policies can benefit St Anthony s parish. Of course, naming our parish as a beneficiary of life insurance proceeds (or a will) can be a wonderful means of making a future major gift. You may even designate policy dividends as gifts. MATCHING GIFTS If you are an employee or a participating retiree of a company or corporation with a "matching gifts program," your gift may be matched if the gift is made to the St. Anthony s Outreach. Check with your employer. (This information is not financial planning, legal or tax advice. Please see your tax advisor and financial planner when considering significant gifts to St. Anthony of Padua Church.) -4-

Today is the last Sunday of the Advent season, and we hear in the Gospel the anticipation of the feast we will celebrate in just one day. Christmas is coming! Jesus is on his way! We have had weeks to prepare for this momentous occasion, and now we are on the very verge of its arrival. The children in our midst can hardly contain their excitement as they wait to wake up on Christmas morning. The thrill of this coming moment is meant to remind us of the joy and anticipation we should all feel as we await the coming of Christ. Yes, Christmas is a great feast, but there is more here than a remembrance of the past or a fabulous party in the present. There is a looking-ahead as well. We celebrate as we anticipate. Much as Mary must have waited in wonder during the nine months of her pregnancy, we wait in hopeful expectation as Christians looking forward to being reunited with our Savior. Our future is full of hope. The deflating melancholy that afflicts many people after a holiday runs its course need not be the experience of the Christian waiting for Christ. We are always looking forward to something! There is never a moment when we have no cause for joy. Our lives are lived in a kind of unending advent as we stand in watchful waiting. Let us remember this as we enter into our Christmas Eve gatherings and festivities. As we join with family and friends to share in the good things of this life, may we carry with us the joy of knowing that even better things lie in store for us who welcome the infant Jesus into our hearts and homes. -7-

9 Youth Ministry NEW Isn't There Anyone Who Knows What Christmas is All About? -Charlie Brown The best explanation I ever heard was the one Linus gave to Charlie Brown... And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were so afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace, good will toward men.'" Gospel of Luke, [King James Version] "A message from all of us in Youth Group" We want to thank all of you who support us in everything we do. It is with your generous help that we can do God's work.
