3 A Special Collection for the Missions This Weekend The Medical Missionaries of Mary are an international congregation of Women Religious who are coming to St Anthony of Padua parish in East Northport, NY THIS WEEKEND to invite you to support their missionary work. Mary went out to Elizabeth in her time of childbirth, so too our Sisters go out to mothers and children in need Sister Doctor Margaret Anne Meyer, MMM will be telling you about their work in Africa and Latin America bringing God's healing love to our wounded world. This is not a pretty picture. Jesus shares a parable in today s Gospel that reminds us of a truth we would rather forget: evil is real, and the devil is at work. The bountiful harvest of our faith is something that Satan wants to destroy. And he has a host of diabolical tactics to help him carry out his wicked plans. But there is one strategy in particular that we must be on guard against. As the French poet Charles Baudelaire put it, The devil s finest trick is to persuade you that he does not exist. Sneaky as it may be, this approach is effective! And, unfortunately, the attitude of our modern era is very conducive to buying the lie. Too often we dismiss the idea of the invisible spiritual reality of angels and demons. It doesn t seem scientific enough for us because it can t be seen or proven. But neither can our faith! We believe in a host of invisible realities starting with God himself. We should not be fooled into thinking that the devil is a make-believe cartoon character with red horns and a pitchfork on his shoulder. Alas, no. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, Scripture witnesses to the disastrous influence of the one Jesus calls a murderer from the beginning (CCC 394) and, as we read in the Bible, Indeed, the Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the Devil (1 Jn 3:8). This is not pretend, and so it must be taken seriously. But so too, the reality of Satan must be situated within the broader context of God s supreme power. The devil cannot prevent the building up of God s reign (CCC 395). The influence of evil can never defeat the power of our faith, unless we let it do so. -7-

O God, we earnestly beseech You to bless this diocese with many priests, Brothers, and Sisters who will love You with their whole strength and gladly spend their entire lives to serve Your Church and to make You known and loved. Bless our families, bless our children. Choose from our homes those who are needed for Thy work. Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for us, pray for our priests and Religious. Obtain for us many more. Wishing you a blessed summer! One Hour With Him Nocturnal Adoration Why do members pray before the exposed sacrament? When praying before the Eucharist exposed, the mind and heart more easily give themselves to communion with Christ. By focusing attention on the sacramental sign of the memorial of the Lord in a spirit of adoration, thanksgiving, atonement, and petition, members seek to internalize and give witness to the significance of the Eucharist for Christian life. Why do members pray at night? For reasons of convenience. For many people living in a fast-paced society, a night hour is often more easily set aside for prayer than one during the day and lends itself to praying in quiet, calm, and recollection. For reasons of symbolism. Keeping vigil during the hours of the night, an ancient tradition among Christians, draws attention to God as the source of light and goodness amid human weakness and sin, and also stimulates a sense of spiritual preparedness & expectation. Can you keep watch with me for one hour? Nocturnal Adoration is an association of Catholics no age limit dedicated to prayer in the name of the whole community and of the Church, before the Blessed Eucharist, for the praise of God and for the needs of the church and the world at large. The night of adoration is the First Friday of every month. If you would like more information contact Fr. Joe at

The Columbiettes & friends are making dresses & baby dolls to support the mission of Dress a Girl Around the World, which is part of the Help 4 Women International organization. We believe in a world where all girls know that they are loved by God & are worthy of respect, & have at least one dress! Please drop off the following items in the bin marked: Dress a Girl Around the World in St. Anthony s vestibule: 100% cotton fabric, light to medium weight (opaque), suitable for little girls, such as florals, dots, stripes and solids (NO Americana/ patriotic, Halloween, obvious Christmas. Each dress has a "Dress a Girl" label that is intended to help keep the girls safe by indicating that they are under the care of the organization. To learn more, go to: Thank you! PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THE CHURCH UNTIL MASS IS OVER. Leaving the church before the dismissal deprives us of the blessing.
