1 St. Paul News The Newsletter of St. Paul Lutheran Church Ida Grove, Iowa Website: January 2018 INSIGHT FROM THE GOD S WORD: EPIPHANY It's Time To Take A Look! As we look at the church calendar, we see that January 6 th marks the beginning of the season of Epiphany. The season of Epiphany is a time when we take a cue from the wise men and take a look at what God is revealing to us in the sky above, in the words of ancient Scripture, in the Baby Jesus, and in the recesses of our very heart and soul. Look-Up It was the wise men from the East who looked up and saw the star that told them that a King had been born. And the wise men kept looking up as they followed the star that led them to Jesus. It's time this Epiphany season to look up at the stars at night, marvel at God's creation, and commit your way to the Lord above, who has sent Jesus to be with us. Look Back When the wise men got to Jerusalem, they asked King Herod, "Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews?" (Matthew 2:2). Herod called the chief priests and scribes to look back in Scripture. They found the answer in the words of the prophet Micah: "You, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel" (Micah 5:2). It's time this Epiphany to look back at the words of Scripture that declare to us that Jesus is indeed the Messiah, the fulfillment of all the prophecies of old, the revelation of all the promises of God. Look Down When the wise men found the Baby Jesus, they looked down, as they knelt before the Son of God and worshiped him. Only then did the wise men open their treasures of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the Lord. It's time this Epiphany season to bow your heads in prayer to the Savior, to come to church for worship, and to humbly offer your gifts to the One who has given us so much - forgiveness, renewal, peace, hope, and love. O God, by the leading of a star You made known Your only-begotten Son to the Gentiles. Lead us, who know You by faith, to enjoy in heaven the fullness of Your divine presence; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (Collect for Epiphany) Your Pastor, Rev. Richard A. Salcido NEXT NEWSLETTER DEADLINE for ANY ITEMS for in the February Newsletter is January 12 th Remember it s up to you or your family members to let the church office know if you are hospitalized. 1

FROM THE PARISH NURSE The following information is taken from an article in the January, 2018 Consumer Reports entitled WHY YOUR EXCUSES FOR SKIPPING THE FLUE SHOT STINK by Rachel Peachman. Since 2010, the flu has resulted in 140,000 to 710,000 hospitalizations each year and contributed to between 12,000 and 56,000 deaths, according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That s why the CDC urges everyone 6 months and older to get vaccinated. But in a recent Consumer Report survey of 744 adults who had a cough, a cold, or the flu in the previous 12 months, only 48 percent said they get the flu shot. Here, rebuttals to three common excuses, plus advice on the right shot for you: Excuse number 1: The Vaccine Doesn t Work. In a typical year, the shot cuts your risk of getting the flu by 40 to 60 percent. And if you get the flu anyway, your symptoms will be milder and you re less likely to have complications, less likely to be admitted to the hospital, and less likely to die, says William Schaffner, MD, medical director for the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. Excuse Number 2: It Can Cause the Flu. Alost all flu vaccines use an inactivated virus that can t trigger the flu. But because the vaccine doesn t eliminate your chance of getting the flu, only reduces it, some people who develop the flu after getting the shot wrongly blame the vaccine. Excuse Number 3: There s Harmful Mercury in Flu Vaccines. A mercury-containing preservative called thimerosal is in certain vaccines. But it s only a trace amount. And that kind of mercury is eliminated by the body more quickly than the form in seafood. In any case, there are many thimerosal-free options for people of any age. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for the best flu vaccine for you. It is not too late to get a flu shot. A prayer for the lonely taken from Portals of Prayer October December, 2017 page 113: O Lord, loneliness is hard. Separation from friends, family, and loved ones makes life at times empty and painful. For those experiencing the pangs of loneliness, I pray that You would fill their hearts and minds with Your presence and Your peace. You are the comforter, and You never leave us nor forsake us. Nothing can separate us from Your love. Please bring Your presence in a mighty way today. I ask in Jesus name. Amen Suzanne Salcido RN, FCN 2

3 COMMUNITY BASKET Donations for January are laundry items, soaps, bleach, dryer sheets. All items are appreciated as well, as they can always use donations. The Community Basket is open on Thursdays (except 3 rd Thusday), from 1:00-4:00PM. The Mobile Pantry will be at the Fire Station in Battle Creek on January 18 th. LIFE SUNDAY January 18, Peter 3:15 17 But in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God s will, than for doing evil. PENNIES FOR LIFE Help support the efforts of Lutherans for Life both locally and nationally through your donations to Lutherans for Life. A container marked Pennies for Life is in the Narthex. Place your donation (Suggestion: 1 penny for each year of life which the Lord has given you through 2017.) In the container. Proceeds will be forwarded to the Iowa Federation of Lutherans for Life. A portion of the donations are then forwarded to the National office. Visit the Lutherans for Life website at LIFEQUOTE Our failures won t undermine the Lord s reign. Others successes can t overthrow it. This world will go on as long as God wills and will then give way to new creation. In Jesus we are guaranteed inclusion in it, as well as having the privilege of participating in His activity not to assert superiority but to save our opponents from the devil s deceptions and our neighbors from final destruction. Let s exercise our majesty enthusiastically! Rev. Michael W. Salemink, executive director of Lutherans For Life A Life Quote from Lutherans For Life FROM THE BOARD OF STEWARDSHIP & MISSIONS Janet Goodenow & Darcy Sibenaller STEWARDSHIP CORNER The new year brings with it new resolve, but so often that resolve fades before the first week is ended. The apostle Paul advised the Corinthians, Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so. Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means (2 Corinthians 8:10,11). By ourselves, we grow tired or get bored or just plain lazy. Let us ask the Lord to give us the desire to give generously, to serve joyfully, and to expend our time eagerly in response to what God has given to us and done for us. LORD, IN THIS NEW YEAR, HELP US TO BE BETTER STEWARDS OF THE TIME THAT YOU GIVE US. Be very careful, then, how you live not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil (Ephesians 5:15-16). FROM SHARA OSIRI, OUR MISSIONARY IN KENYA God s People In Rwanda It was a blessing to accompany my Area Director, Rev. Shauen Trump to Rwanda to visit with the Refo rmed Lutheran Church of Rwanda. I always hoped that God would send me back some day. I went on a mission trip to Rwanda very early on my journey to becoming a missionary, and if I remember correctly, it was in During my time there, we met survivors of the genocide and I remember asking God why do such things happen and it broke my heart. At that time I was not a person that cried too much, but I would lay awake at night just sobbing about all that I heard. It was then that I asked God to use me in Africa, and that if I ould make a difference, even in the slightest way, that I would desire to do so in Africa. On this recent trip we visited with our brothers and sisters in Christ as they desire to be in a closer relationship with the LCMS. During the numerous conversations, we learned that they want to receive more training on the Lutheran Confessions of Faith, the Liturgy and the Catechism among other things. Part of our ministry is to walk alongside our brothers and sisters in Christ and to bring forth God's mission on earth. God has revealed in His Word what He requires of us. He wants us to bear witness of the grace that we have received and to magnify Him as the Gospel is shared. We are to show mercy to our neighbor. Yours in Christ... Shara MISSION CENTRAL EVENTS Highway E16 Mapleton, IA Be sure to check the bulletin board in the hallway by pastors offices for information on Missionaries visiting Mission Central this month. 3

4 FROM THE BOARD OF EVANGELISM / ASSIMILATION Brent Harm & Tera Parks READ MATTHEW 2:1-12. The star of the Epiphany story is actually the star itself! God used the star to lead the Magi to the Savior of the world that they might worship Him. As God s faithful witness, you may be the star that God uses to lead someone in your life to worship the Lord and Savior of the world, Jesus Christ! Shine bright! JOIN US ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 3 AT 7:15PM for a second brainstorming session. We will look at how to strengthen our congregation and its outreach. Come with your thoughts and ideas. This is open to all members." FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Scott Van Dusen, Jeff Gilbert, Aaron Hoffman & Brandon Johnson Safety improvements for the stairwell railing are almost complete One panel (of three) remains to be fabricated to fit over the vertical bars of the railings. Investigation of the possibility of repairs to 7th street parking area is progressing. Narthex window replacement bid received. Plans are to replace windows after April 1st. FROM THE BOARD OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Christy Ladwig & Amy Godbersen EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE CLASS: Join us at 6:30 AM at Zimmy s Restaurant. WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY: Spanning the events of just over one hundred years, 1 and 2 Samuel describe a time when Israel rebelled against God, demanding an earthly king to lead her. However, these books also tell the story of how a merciful God intervened to usher in the reign of King David, Israel's greatest king and an ancestor of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:1-16). In the pages of 1 and 2 Samuel, you will: see how God's last judge, Samuel, applies both Law and Gospel; read about Saul and David, remarkably different individuals but remarkably the same; rejoice in God's promises made to David that are fulfilled in his descendant and our Savior, Jesus Christ. Join us at 9:30 AM in the lower level Conference Room. SUNDAY ADULT BIBLE CLASS: In the Fellowship Hall, 10:15-11:15AM in January we we will resume our study of the Gospel According to John. WEDNESDAY EVENING (during Midweek) LADIES BIBLE STUDY, from 6:00-7:00PM, Living a Chocolate Life by Deb Burma is a women's Bible study that warmly invites all to savor God s rich and endless supply of grace in Christ. 5 WINTER GIFT God does great things beyond our knowing. He says to the snow, Fall to the earth ; likewise to his heavy, drenching rain. He shuts up all humankind indoors, so that all people may know his work (Job 37:5-7, NABRE). Snow, ice and cold can make winter a hassle. Snow days due to a blizzard may thrill students but usually inconvenience parents. But now and then, winter blankets the earth so heavily that it seems to quiet everything. We re granted permission to hunker down at home, snuggle close with family or pets, enjoy a book or movie, make cocoa or cookies, and rest. It s like a surprise sabbath the gift of grace-time when no one s expected to get out the door or the driveway. Perhaps indeed, as Job declared, God sees fit on such days to put our busyness on hold and shut us all indoors so we pause and remember his work his place in our lives. Praise God for snow days! Heidi Mann A NEW YOU The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective. G.K. Chesterton THE MEANING OF EPIPHANY Epiphany, which comes from the Greek word epiphaneia, means an appearance or a revealing. Centuries ago, the church set aside January 6, the 12th day after Christmas, to mark the revealing of Jesus as Christ to the wise men, who were Gentiles. Jesus first followers were Jewish, so the revelation of the divine Christ to the non-jewish magi reminds us that Jesus came to earth to save the whole world. Symbols of Epiphany include light, a star, a crown (or three crowns) and a globe or stylized portrayal of the world. The color of Epiphany is green to symbolize life, growth, hope and eternity. On the church calendar, the Epiphany season lasts until Ash Wednesday, which is determined by the date of Easter. 5
