1 St. Paul News The Newsletter of St. Paul Lutheran Church Ida Grove, Iowa Website: June 2018 A Precious Gift from Parents and Others Way back in the 8 th grade, I remember going with my dad to Orlando. It was in the days when internet was in its infancy. We didn t have a smart phone or lap top or a tablet. So, on Saturday evening of the trip, I remember my dad thumbing through the phone book trying to find an LCMS church in Orlando. Then on Sunday morning, we got lost trying to find the church, but we did find a very beautiful church just outside downtown Orlando. A few years later, when I was in High School, (some have heard this before) it was the morning after prom. I had been at After Prom the night before. I didn t get home until 4am. I was absolutely exhausted. None the less at 7am my dad woke me up to go to church. I pleaded to sleep in more, but I was told I could sleep when I got home (which I did all afternoon). I attended both church and high school Bible class that morning. As we have past mother s day and approach father s day, I write of these memories, because they were some of the most valuable lessons my dad ever taught me. Yes, my dad taught me many other valuable skills for life, but none was more valuable then teaching me the importance of attending worship, no matter what. Parents, there is no more valuable lesson to teach your children then the value of regularly hearing God s word for them. So, you set a good example by attending Adult Bible Classes. You take your children to Sunday School and Midweek and Vacation Bible School (June 25-29). Most especially, you make sure they are in church and they become confirmed. Probably my favorite show of all-time is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In one of the episodes, Buffy sacrifices herself for her sister. Just before doing so she says this to her sister, Dawn, the hardest thing in this world is to live in it. This statement is so true, isn t it? The world is constantly beating us up. The devil is constantly firing his arrows at us, seeking to destroy us and lure us into his eternal misery. For this, God gives us means to carry us through this difficult world. First and foremost, he gave us his Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus, who suffered and died on the cross for you. He continues to give you His Son through the preaching, hearing, and reading of God s word. He continues to give you His Son in the waters of Baptism. God also gives us His Son in the reception of the Lord s Supper. Jesus himself said of the bread This is my body and of the wine This is my blood. He says of this meal, that we receive the forgiveness of sins. These gifts of the word, baptism, and the Lord s Supper are all gifts from our heavenly Father. They are gifts to help us endure this troublesome world. So, fathers and mothers, the most precious gift you can give to your children, no matter how old they are, is these same gifts. Read the Bible with them. Read and learn Luther s Large Catechism, so that you can walk with your kids through Confirmation. Make sure that confirmation isn t graduation from church, but a continuation of learning God s word in youth group and college groups and adult Bible classes. Make sure that they continue to receive the Lord s Supper as often as they can. Grandparents, make sure your adult children are raising their children in God s word. If you are like me and don t have children. Then be an influence on the youth in your lives. Be kind and compassionate, tell them about the love of Jesus. Tell their parents as well. Invite them to Vacation Bible School. Invite your neighbors to church. Be sure that you are in adult Bible classes. For those of you who have had parents or grandparents or someone else that made sure you were reading God s word. That you were in church. That you were in Bible class. To these people, say Thank You. Most of all, thank God for putting them in your lives. In Christ, Pastor Neil Wehmas 1

Here are some health and safety tips taken from the website Camping Health and Safety Tips Camping is a fun way to get family and friends together to enjoy the outdoors. Follow these tips to help ensure your camping trip is safe and healthy. Get vaccinated. Vaccinations can help protect against certain diseases and conditions while camping. Check with your doctor or nurse to see if you've had all of the recommended vaccines. He or she may recommend tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), meningitis, and/or hepatitis A, depending on your medical history, destination, and other factors. Prepare safe food and water. Bring safe and healthy foods along on your camping trip. Eating contaminated food and drinking contaminated water can increase the risk of developing certain infectious diseases caused by germs. Follow these steps to keep your food and water safe: Pack foods in tight, waterproof bags or containers. Keep them in an insulated cooler. Wash hands and surfaces often. Use hand sanitizer if water is not available. Separate raw foods from cooked foods. Cook foods to proper temperatures (for instance, ground beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees). Chill foods promptly. Include safe physical activities. Camping is a great way to get physical activity. Do things such as walking, hiking, biking, or swimming to stay active during your camping trip. Be sure to bring protective gear, such as helmets, sturdy shoes, and life jackets. Avoid poisonous plants, like poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. Know your limits, and take steps to avoid injury during activities. Never hike or swim alone. Watch kids closely. Adults should get at least 2½ hours a week and kids should get at least 1 hour a day of physical activity. Protect against carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless and can cause illness or death in people and pets. Never use fuel-burning equipment such as gas stoves, heaters, lanterns, and charcoal grills inside a tent, camper, or other enclosed shelter. It can cause dangerous levels of carbon monoxide to build up. As alternative heat sources to fuel-burning appliances inside an enclosed shelter, campers should bring adequate bedding and clothing and should consume extra calories and fluids during the outing to prevent hypothermia (a dangerous loss of body warmth that can cause death). Avoid wild animals, and protect family pets. Some wild animals carry diseases that are dangerous to people. Avoid touching, feeding, and getting near wild animals. Enjoy watching them from a safe distance in their natural surroundings. Keep foods stored in sealed containers and out of the reach of animals. Make sure your family pets are vaccinated and always keep a close eye on them. Check for ticks, and remove them promptly. Make sure pets have plenty of water, food, and shelter. Fight the bug bite. Mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects can cause certain diseases. To help fight the bite, apply insect repellant containing DEET to exposed skin. Be sure to follow directions on the package. Check for ticks daily, and remove them promptly. Wear long sleeves, pants, and other light-colored clothing to help prevent and spot ticks more easily. Prevent temperature-related illness. To help prevent hypothermia during cool nights, bring adequate bedding and clothing to stay warm. Use a plastic ground cloth under your tent to help keep you dry. To help prevent heat-related illness during hot days, drink plenty of alcohol-free and sugar-free fluids. Don t 3

4 wait until you re thirsty to drink. Wear layers of light-weight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing. Rest often in shady areas. Protect yourself from too much sun. Protect yourself from the sun. Protection from ultraviolet (UV) radiation is important all year. UV rays from the sun can reach you on cloudy and hazy days, as well as bright and sunny days. Use a broadspectrum (against UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen and lipscreen with at least SPF 15. Seek shade, especially during midday hours, when the sun s rays are strongest. Cover up with clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Avoid water-related illness and injury. Camping often includes playing in and around the water. To help protect yourself and your fellow campers from illness, don t swim if you have diarrhea, and don t swallow the water you swim in. Take a shower before and after swimming. Never swim alone. If you plan to ride in a boat, canoe, or other water vehicle, be sure to wear a life jacket. Be prepared. Always prepare for the unexpected. Before you leave, check the weather report, learn about security at your camp location, and tell family and friends your plans. Know what to do when toilets are not available. Be sure to bring along a supply kit that includes a first-aid kit, compass or GPS, map, flashlight, blankets, batteries, food, water, clothes, and medications. Know who to contact at the camp to report issues that may come up. When you return home, check for ticks, skin rashes or sunburn, dehydration, and other problems. A prayer for Families and Children taken from Portals of Prayer April-June, 2018 p. 116: Jesus, I know when You walked this earth that You lived as we do. You were once a child and had a family, so You know the joys and difficult times a family can have. I ask that You bless all families, so they know of Your love for them and so they can share that love with one another. And in Your love, have families know forgiveness, so they can move forward in peace. Amen. Suzanne Salcido, FCN, RN FROM THE BOARD OF STEWARDSHIP & MISSIONS Janet Goodenow & Darcy Sibenaller STEWARDSHIP CORNER The love of material things is epidemic in our society. Unfortunately, as Christians we are not exempt from materialistic interests. Peter Wehner wrote, In pursuit of wealth and worldly pleasure, Christians have become virtually indistinguishable from the rest of the world. Jesus warns us as follows: What good will it be for a man if he gains the world, yet forfeits his soul? (Matthew 16:26). With God s help, we can overcome the attraction and pull of money and material things so that God remains in control of our lives. GOD IS THE SOURCE AND OWNER of all. as stewards, we possess what he entrusts to us. The earth is the Lord s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it (Psalm 24:1). MISSION CENTRAL EVENTS Mission Central LCMS World Mission Highway E 16, Mapleton, Iowa PH: Gary.Thies@lcms.org Brent.Smith@lcms.org Be sure to check the bulletin board in the hallway by pastors offices for information on Missionaries visiting Mission Central this month. FROM SHARA OSIRI, OUR MISSIONARY IN KENYA Sunday was an exciting day for me and I m sure for Rev. Aadland as well. For me, I would stand side by side with these dear brothers and sisters and receive the Lord s Supper together. For Rev. Aadland he would get to administer the Lord s Supper to those who have waited a long time to receive it. There were over 150 people that attended service. Rev. Aadland did a review on the Lord s Supper before the service started. It was heartwarming to watch all of the faces focused on him, including the children. The time came for the words of institution and Rev. Aadland chanted in English and Okach echoed in the Anuak language. I was among the first group of ten to receive communion. I glanced quickly at those beside me and thought, This is indeed a special moment as we are unified in Christ through His body and blood. As each group of ten came 4

5 forward, I could see the joy on their faces and my heart was overjoyed to bear witness. Sixty brothers and sisters received Holy Communion that day after many years without. We often take for granted the things that are readily accessible to us. In our home congregations, we received the Lord s Supper regularly. For these Christians that live in such a remote place, that is not the case. It is quite a journey to get to the refugee camp and the communion elements are not available there. Thanks be to God for the opportunities that He has blessed me with to bear witness to and share the love of Christ with many.
