Are you familiar with why a name or petition is listed? Mass intentions are part of our Catholic tradition. Here s a little information about the tradition. The tradition of the Roman Catholic Church supports the concept of Mass Intention. The church draws from its understanding of the communion with the saints. Together the living, the brothers and sisters in heaven and those who are purgatory are joined as one community. The person, whether deceased or living farther from us, is still a member of the community of faithful. We acknowledge their presence, their special needs and continue to keep them close even in the experience of death. A Mass intention thus may be for a special occasion such as a birthday, anniversary, etc.; a Mass Intention may be for a special need such as job search, health concern, personal struggle, etc.; a Mass Intention may be to remember someone who has died and is need of our prayers. Having a community pray with us for any of these occasions brings comfort and joy to the everyday experiences of our lives. The tradition of Mass Intentions began in the very early church. 2 Grief Share Series The Pastoral Care Committee is planning another Grief Share Series to begin at the end of August. We need at least three interested individuals to begin the group. The group will be on Mondays and the time is currently not set, as we will accommodate the wishes of the participants. If you are interested in attending, please contact Jennifer Kareken in the Parish Office. Jesus Is Here! Jesus is Here for the children. We welcome any child ages 2 to 5 to explore the faith in a special way in their pew, by taking a bag from the Jesus Statue in the West Gathering space at the beginning of Mass. It will generously give to those in need, if I am a generous giver. It will bring others into its worship, if I invite and bring them. Golliver 2 For I Was Hungry and You Gave Me Food Wausau is known as a community that is compassionate and generous to those in need. Every week, dozens of volunteers come forward to make and serve evening meals, available to the hungry of the Wausau area. St. Anne s served the evening meal at St. Paul s United Church of Christ on Tuesday, August 13. Meal Coordinator was Kathy Mero, and about 120 meals were served. The menu was hot dogs, green beans, potato salad, fresh fruit and desserts. Volunteers who helped are Rose & Larry Thompson, Tim Mero, Deb Schleinz, Deb Chittum, Ann Kleppe, Stacie, Emma, Matthew & Michael Stanke, Wendy, Baylee, Kayla & Jake Furrer, Jackson & Quincy Pfender, Connie Seidl, Vicki Peroutka & Lynn Sirianni. Bob & Mary Weller, and Ginny & Tina Dimeo made donations towards the meal, in memory of their dear friend Peggy Gross. On Thursday, September 19 we will serve the evening meal at Jubilee House. Serving time is 4:30 to 6 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve the meal, and dessert donations are also requested. Please contact Meal Coordinator Barb Laurent if you can help. Come up the center aisle for Communion and show the Communion Minister the card. They will provide a special dish from which you can take a low gluten host. Newspaper Sales: There are Sunday newspapers for sale at the West and South Entrances. They are $2 each. 3 continued from cover... that the Church was understanding itself as a community joined in prayer for the joys and sorrows of life. Inscriptions are discovered on tombs in Roman catacombs of the second century; on the tomb of Abercius (d. 180), Bishop of Hieropolis in Phrygia begs for prayers for the repose of his soul. The Canons of Hippolytus (c. 235) explicitly mention the offering of prayers for the dead during Mass. St. Ambrose (d. 397) preached, We have loved them during life; let us not abandon them in death, until we have conducted them by our prayers into the house of the Lord. St. Augustine writes in his Confessions a dying wish of his mother, One thing only I ask you, that you remember me at the altar of the Lord wherever you may be. What a beautiful insight that we remember each other at the altar of the Lord! The priest, during Mass, offers three intentions. The first intention is to offer the Mass reverently and validly according to the norms of the church. The second intention is to offer the Mass in union with the whole Church and for the good of the whole church. The third intention is to offer the Mass for a particular intention, such as the repose of the soul of someone who has died (or another special need). This third intention is where parish members are invited to request a particular intention. Mass intentions are part of the salary of the priest. In the tradition of the church, priests were not paid a salary. In order to provide the personal needs of the priest who is leading a community, the members of the church would request that a priest pray for their needs often for a person who had died, was sick or a special need for a family, church, community or world. The priest prayed the Mass, and during this Mass offered silent prayer for this need. Attached to the intention was a monetary offering from which the priest was provided a living wage. In our present time and in this Diocese, the stipend given for a Mass continues to be part of the salary. Parish Front Desk Volunteers Needed: We have a few openings for a Front Desk Volunteer on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If you are able to offer a couple hours a week at a regular basis this might be something to consider. Responsibilities include but not limited to: phone answering, greeting visitors, sorting mail, and general office tasks. Computer experience is helpful but not required. 5 Food Donations During the Preparation of Gifts: Items collected during the Preparation of Gifts for August will go to The Neighbor s Place. St. Anne s Musical Tours News! Wednesday, Aug. 14th was the day that the St. Anne s Musical Tours Group traveled to the Fireside Theatre in Fort Atkinson for the show Run For your Wife. What a wonderful day. We hope that everyone enjoyed the day as much as the Hospitality Committee enjoyed hosting the event. Our next tour is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 16th, again to the Fireside Theatre. This time we will see Once Upon a Mattress. We have increased the cost of the show to $98 to cover the cost of the fun, food, and friendship; it s well worth it. Come and see. Faith Formation Registration Still Open Time is ticking!! Registrations for Faith Formation has officially closed effective August 1. HOWEVER, IF you have not submitted your registration form(s) for the faith formation year ahead, we will still gladly accept them on a first-come-first-served waitlist basis due to class size availability. Furthermore, any forms received from this point forward will be assessed a $25 administrative late fee. In early April, you received in the mail your spring registration packet. Please read that mailing over CAREFULLY as some of the registration details and deadlines have changed. Lose the mailing in that pile of mail on the kitchen counter?
