He is well known for the founding of the Franciscan order. Many monks and brothers continue the work of his order and follow the rule that was established for the people who desire to follow his concern for the poor and God s creation. Sometimes people desire to follow this way of Francis, yet are called to live this lifestyle as a lay person rather than a monk, brother or sister. As religious orders emerged, this desire as a lay person to live the Gospel through a connection with a religious order caused the development of Secular Third Orders. A Secular Third Order is an association of laity. The purpose of the Third Order is to provide for laity who seek to attain holiness by following a way of life in the world but under the inspiration and spiritual guidance of a papally approved religious institute (Pope Nicholas V in 1447). The first aspect of being a secular third order is renewing baptismal promises. A person is promising to live their baptismal call in a special connection to a religious order. To accomplish this, religious practices of the third orders are meant to suit the life in secular society with a special challenge to its members to take seriously the gospel of Jesus in the continued on p. 3 Stop by the Parish Office to enjoy donuts and fellowship after the 8:30 a.m. Mass. 3 continued from cover... context of the tradition of order to which they are affiliated. The initial formal structure for third orders was attained with St. Francis of Assisi and the Franciscans. Over time, the third order has become possible in a variety of orders. When a person desires to join a Secular Third Order, this person enters into a three year formation period. The first period is inquiry, spanning 1-2 years. A time of discernment and spiritual training is forming the lifestyle of a Secular Franciscan. Following this time, a person continues with candidacy, a time of continued growth in the spiritual of St. Francis. Ultimately the person is discerning if they are called to be a Secular Franciscan by the Holy Spirit; the fruit of this discernment is finding joy as they volunteer at the service of the poor and marginalized. Profession and clothing in the habit of the order occur upon completion of the three years of training. Upon entrance to the third order, a person lives the spirituality unfolding in the commitment to live as St. Francis lived. Living the gospel with joy is a daily work by which each person hopes to attract people to Jesus through the joy, acceptance and generosity offered. The rule of their order assists in learning to live this lifestyle. Praying particular prayers daily keeps the connection with Christ and wearing a habit is a reminder to be living the gospel. The habit can be as simple as wearing a scapular or a medal that identifies the connection of the person with the order. Wausau provides a local opportunity to join a Third Order the Secular Franciscans. Their community is St. James Fraternity within the LaVerna Region of the Secular Franciscans. They meet on a regular basis at St. Michael Church wherein every Secular Franciscan continues the formation of their faith and vocation. St. James Fraternity seeks to do the work for the poor in our area. They are involved in offering prayers for many needs. They are involved in providing or helping with meals at Salvation Army and Jubilee House. They have donated baking supplies for the Indian Mission at Stone Lake. In order to raise the funds to assist their work with the poor, they have accomplished Brat sales over the summer. Presently two candidates are seeking to join the Fraternity and two candidates are ready to make their professions. Several members of St. Anne Parish are actively involved with the Secular Third Order Franciscans. What a wonderful opportunity is provided to our area by their presence! A wish of God s peace is extended to the families and friends of Sharon Kufahl and Jack Mielke. Her funeral was on Thursday, Sept. 26 and his funeral was on Thursday, October 3. May our presence and prayers support those who mourn their deaths. May they rest in peace! May the blessings of God be showered upon you this week! Fr.
