He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name s sake. 8 Robert E. R. Huntley, former president of Washington and Lee University, died on December 10, 2015, in Lexington, Va. He was 86. Mr. Huntley served as president of W&L for fifteen years, from 1968 to 1983, having previously taught at the University s law school, where he also served briefly as dean before being named president. In 1984, Mr. Huntley became president and later chairman of Best Products, Inc., until that company was bought out in He then became counsel to the Richmond law firm of Hunton & Williams. He and his wife, Evelyn, returned to Lexington in retirement in During his career, he was a member of several corporate, charitable, and public boards. These included Centel Corp., Piedmont Airlines, Shenandoah Life Insurance Co., Virginia State Board of Education, Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges, Virginia Historical Society, and Altria Group, Inc., formerly Philip Morris Companies, Inc., where he served on the board for 34 years. Born in Winston-Salem, N.C., Mr. Huntley was educated in the public schools of that city and at Washington and Lee, where he received B.A. and LL.B degrees. He received a master s degree in law from Harvard University and was awarded several honorary degrees. Mr. Huntley is survived by his three daughters and three sons-in-law: Martha and Dyer Rodes, of Nashville, Tenn.; Katie and Jim McConnel, of Mount Crawford, Va.; and Jane and John Duncan, of Staunton, Va.; by six grandchildren, Huntley Elizabeth Rodes (a 2007 graduate of W&L), Sarah Catherine Rodes (a 2011 graduate), Jordan Elizabeth McConnel (a 2010 graduate), Robert Huntley McConnel, William Colin Whitmore and Cole Huntley Whitmore. He was uncle to Robert Huntley 75. His brother was the late Dr. Benjamin F. Huntley III 46. His wife, Evelyn Huntley, died in When looking back on his life and career, Mr. Huntley often said that he never sought the leadership roles he held during his life, but made each decision as it came along. Despite the legacy of leadership he leaves at W&L and beyond, he considered his greatest legacy to be that of the close-knit family he and Evelyn created together. Their three daughters, sons-in-law, and particularly their six grandchildren reflect their dedication to that family. The family would like to thank the community at Kendal of Lexington and particularly the caregivers who have faithfully taken such excellent care of Mr. Huntley.
