1 Volume 40, Issue 7 July 2010 July C O M M U N I T Y U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H Community Clarion Hallowed Ground - Washington s Monuments to Faith, Family, and Freedom Judges and legislators who exhibit confusion about the constitutionality of acknowledgments of God in (and on) public buildings should get out of their stuffy chambers and go visit some of our national treasures. Just one day spent traversing the Mall in Washington, D.C., would expose them to an undeniable fact of American history: Biblical and religious quotations, including the Ten Commandments, adorn nearly every significant building and monument in our nation's capital, inscribed and enshrined there as the natural public conversation of America's leaders in every generation. Indeed, the role of faith, family and freedom in American history is inscribed on monuments across the length and breadth of Washington, D.C. For instance, the words of Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address, carved in granite, thunder from inside the Memorial that bears his name, praying that the "mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away" but recalling that "the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether." From the Lincoln Memorial, a perfect line of sight connects you with the magnificent obelisk of the Washington Monument. The form of the Monument recalls ancient Rome and Greece, but at its topmost point, inscribed on the aluminum tip of the capstone, is the Latin phrase Laus Deo -- "Praise be to God." Along the stairway to that height are 190 carved tributes donated by states, cities, individuals, associations, and foreign governments. The blocks resound with quotations from Scripture -- "Holiness to the Lord" (Exodus 28), "Search the Scriptures" (John 5:39), "The memory of the just is blessed" (Proverbs 10:7) -- and such invocations as, "May Heaven to this Union continue its Benefice." Further east, along the Mall's north side, stands the National Archives. No building in Washington, save perhaps the Library of Congress, is more emblematic of this nation's desire to preserve its history as the key to a secure future. Carved in stone adjacent to the entrance of the Archives are the words "What is past is prologue," appropriately introducing the original parchment of the United States Constitution inside. Inlaid at the Archives' entrance is a bronze medallion of the Ten Commandments, surrounded by four winged figures representing Legislation, Justice, History, and War and Defense, a testament to the Archives' architects' bold witness to the centrality of biblical truth to the American experience. Still further east, the level expanse of the Mall gives way to the gentle rise of Jenkins' Hill, known by its more political name, Capitol Hill. Below the west front of the Capitol, where our presidents take their inaugural oaths, lay gardens planted with the offerings of people and organizations from around the world. One such planting is a group of five crabapple trees, donated by the people of Iowa in memory of the five Sullivan brothers, sons of the Hawkeye State, who served and died together aboard the U.S.S. Juneau in World War II. This living monument, eloquent beyond words, reminds Americans of the "costly sacrifice" so many families have laid, in Lincoln's words, "on the altar of freedom." The U.S. Capitol also bears public witness to the legacy of biblically inspired faith that Americans have passed on from generation to generation. New England statesman and orator Daniel Webster was voted by the United States Senate in the 1980s as one of the five greatest senators ever to serve in that chamber. In 1851, when the new House and Senate wings of the Capitol were begun, Webster gave a speech that was deposited in the cornerstone. Its final words are these: If, therefore, it shall hereafter be the will of God that this structure should fall from the base, that its foundations be upturned, and this deposit brought to the eyes of men, be it then known, that on this day the Union of the United States of America stands firm, that their constitution still exists unimpaired, and with all of its original usefulness and glory, growing every day stronger and stronger in the affection of the great body of the American people, and attracting more and more the admiration of the world. And all here assembled, whether belonging to public life or to private life, with hearts devotedly thankful to Almighty God for the preservation of the liberty and happiness of the country, unite in sincere and fervent prayers that this deposit, and the walls and arches, the domes and towers, the columns and the entablatures, now to be erected over it, may endure forever. From the plaza of the Capitol, look west across the Mall to the hillsides of Arlington Cemetery, where lay the remains of generations who kept the pledges of life, fortune, and sacred honor to keep our nation free. Each hour the guard is changed at the tomb where rests "in honored glory an American soldier known but to God." From cornerstones to capstones, from cornices to colonnades, from the halls of Congress to the hallowed hillsides of Arlington Cemetery, a mighty causeway of faith courses through the landscape of the nation's capital. To eliminate that causeway would require more than the intellectual dishonesty of judges and legislators; it would require the wielding of chisels and jackhammers against marble and granite. The dramas playing themselves out in Alabama and other communities across the nation do not yet feature such tools of historical revisionism, but their implication is the same: To blot out the acknowledgment of God in our public life is to change the meaning of America. Thank you for your support of this purchase for our church. Looking forward to 2011 In our continuing efforts to lower operating expenses for the church, I have contacted Church Budget, the company that supplies us with our giving envelopes each year, and they have agreed to make both monthly and weekly envelopes for us in Currently we get weekly envelopes for everyone but some people prefer to make their donations once each month. These people are then left with a lot of envelopes they don t need. So this year our monthly givers will get monthly envelopes which will dramatically reduce the number of envelopes they get for the year and they will not Page 4 have to throw so many away. The cost of these envelopes will be less because there are fewer in the box. When I place the order for 2011 I will ask the company to send monthly envelopes for all members that the Finance Committee tells me are monthly givers. If you are a weekly giver, and wish to continue your weekly donation, you will see no change in your envelopes. If you have questions or concerns about this change, contact Hugh Knapp or Sherry Dangremond. The 2011 envelope order will be placed on July 26. Sherry Dangremond

5 From Red Bird I would like to tell you my story.. I am a divorced mother with five children. Yes. I said five children. Life has not always been easy for my children and me. By faith, a lot of prayer, and good friends I call my family, I made it to this point in my life. Like some girls, I married at a very young age. My husband was a coal miner and life was good. I was a stay at home mom because there was no need for me to work. As the years passed by, my husband had been hurt many times in coal mining accidents, and had become addicted to pain killers. I eventually obtained a divorce and found myself a single parent, no job, and living in the projects with five mouths to feed. I had no idea what I was going to do. For a long time, I wandered around like the children Egypt did in the wilderness. I grumbled, complained, and made a mess of my life. I stopped trusting in God, and because of this, my children and I suffered; however, God has a way of making things right with us, especially when we turn our lives and our hearts over to Him. It wasn t until I reached my lowest point an cried out to Him, that my life began to pull back together again. God began to open doors for me. My children had always attended school here in Frakes, Kentucky and attended the Summer Recreation program at Henderson Settlement(1). I had been enrolled in the MIHOW(2) program and received assistance from the Food Pantry as well. Mission Reports Because I was involved in some of the programs, I found out there was a part-time position available in the After- School program. I applied, and by the grace of God, I was hired for the position. The job was small at first (the bible says not to despise small beginnings) but has led to great things for me and my children. Through Henderson Settlement, I have obtained employment, necessary job skills, a great place to raise my children, and have made friends that are closer to me than family. God worked a miracle in my life it wasn t overnight, but a miracle just the same. He took a very bad situation and turned it into something great, and He did it for me. That is how awesome our God is! I once was in the position of some of the people we serve here at Henderson Settlement. I know how they feel and understand their needs. I am grateful for every trial and tribulation that has been put before me because they made me who I am and better able to understand the hardships of people in our area. Henderson Settlement is a great place that helps change the lives of people! I am living proof of that! Testimony of Kim Mason Note: 1. Henderson Settlement is part of the ministries of Red Bird and provides ways to meet the basic needs of the people of Appalachia. 2. MIHOW - Maternal Infant Health Outreach Worker. A Word from World Gospel Mission If you ask me, one of the biggest problems facing Christianity today is our tendency to find and stay in ruts. We much prefer to find something that works, turn it into a formula, and stick to it. This is so true that when someone comes along with a new, out-of-the-box idea, we are taken by surprise. Unfortunately, innovation and creativity have become exceptions instead of rules. So let me challenge you with this thought: Accomplishing the mission of God requires out-of-thebox thinking! One place that requires this kind of thinking is Papua New Guinea. With over 800 languages and hundreds of tribal beliefs and traditions, it would be an understatement to say that the pastors and missionaries working there have had to think outside the box as they train local leaders. The odds are tremendous. Language, culture, geography, and history all say that training leaders together would be impossible. But...what is impossible with man is possible with Christ. And you know what I love most about that truth? I love that God chooses to partner with us to accomplish the impossible. Our missionaries are bringing together believers in many different parts of the world and finding ways to help them connect and learn together! That takes new thinking! Now I challenge you to think outside-the-box in your own mission involvement. Hubert Harriman, President Page 5

9 News from the Library Several of your favorite authors have books among the top 20 Christian fiction books, according to the Christian Booksellers Association: Take Three, by Karen Kingsbury Shades of Blue, by Karen Kingsbury Take One, by Karen Kingsbury Redeeming Love, by Francine Rivers A Lineage of Grace, by Francine Rivers Betsy's Return, by Wanda Brunstetter Maid to Match, by Deeanne Gist The Telling, by Beverly Lewis No Distance Too Far, by Lauraine Snelling Dawn's Prelude, by Tracie Peterson Be sure to stop by the Community UMC Library to borrow one or more of these selections and enter your name in our Summer Library Contest. Speaking of the Summer Library Contest, we need more children to choose a book and have their names entered in the contest! So far, we've had mostly adults participating. So, boys and girls, ask your parents to take you downstairs to the Library next Sunday! Calling All Readers! This is an invitation: To all those who tend to read more than the average person -- we think you probably have a favorite book or series that you've particularly enjoyed over the last few months. You know who you are and, for future newsletters, we plan to call upon several of you to help us make your 'book review' a feature article! We all enjoy reading about personal experiences, and, you may be giving someone else in the church the initiative to stop by the Library for the very first time! A Big Thank You to everyone who uses the Library -- we really do appreciate your taking the time to come downstairs and visit us. We look forward to seeing many of you on a regular basis, and we always welcome newcomers!! Pass the word -- the Community UMC Library is a great place to meet friends and discover resources of all kinds -- books, music CDs, DVDs and more! Suppose Jesus came to your church. I don t mean symbolically. I mean visibly. Physically. Actually. Suppose he came to your church. Would you recognize him? It might be difficult. Jesus didn t wear religious clothes in his day. Doubtful that he would wear them in ours. If he came today to your church, he d wear regular clothes. Nothing fancy, just a jacket and shoes and a tie. Maybe a tie...maybe not. He would have a common name. Jesus was a common name in his time. I suppose he might go by Joe or Bob or Terry or Elliot. Elliot...I like that. Suppose Elliot, the Son of God, came to your church. Of course, he wouldn t be from Nazareth or Israel. He d hail from some small spot down the road like Avon, or Lorain, or Elyria. And he d be a laborer. He was a carpenter in his day. No reason to think he d change, but let s say he did. Let s say that this time around he was a plumber. Elliot, the plumber from Elyria. God, a plumber? Rumor has it that he fed a football field of people near the lake. Others say he healed a senator s son from Bay Village. Some say he s the Son of God. Others say he s the joke of the year. You don t know what to think. And, then one Sunday, he shows up. About midway through the service he appears in the back of the Sanctuary and takes a seat. After a few songs he moves closer to the front. After yet another song he steps up Looking for the Messiah on the platform and announces, You are singing about me. I am the Son of God. He holds a Communion tray. This bread is my body. This wine is my blood. When you celebrate this, you celebrate me! What would you think? Would you be offended? The audacity of it all. How irreverent, a guy names Elliot as the Son of God! Would you be interested? Wait a minute, how could he be the Son of God? He never went to seminary, never studied at a college. But there is something about him Would you believe? I can deny it s crazy. But I can t deny what he has done. It s easy to criticize contemporaries of Jesus for not believing in him. But when you realize how he came, you can understand their skepticism. Jesus didn t fit their concept of a Messiah. Wrong background. Wrong pedigree. Wrong hometown. No Messiah would come from Nazareth. Small, hick, one-stoplight town. He didn t fit the Jews notion of a Messiah, and so, rather than change their notion, they dismissed him. He came as one of them. He was Jesus from Nazareth. Elliot from Elyria. He fed the masses with calloused hands. He raised the dead wearing bib overalls and a John Deere Tractor cap. They expected lights and kings and chariots from heaven. What they got was sandals and sermons and a Galilean accent. And so some missed him. And so, some miss him still.
