The Community Clarion June/July 2015 Curt Dodd tells us Life is full of change. Everything about us changes. Change is inevitable. You can know that very simply by looking in the mirror. You're not the same person as you were two years ago. The color in your hair, if you're older, has probably changed, either by your own hand, or time's hand. In fact, life is a series of changes. Community UMC is about to experience a change - a change in Pastors. Over the next month we will say goodbye to Pastor Don & Rosemary as they move to a new phase of life - retirement. And we will open our hearts to receive Pastor Kevin and Theresa into our church community. Pastor Don, It s almost time to say goodbye and we do so with a heavy heart. While we wish you and Rosemary the best we do so knowing that we will not see you each day as has been the rule for 10 years. We pray that as you both enter this new phase of your lives you are blessed with rest, new ways to spend your time, and anticipation of the joys that lie ahead. Thank you for shepherding us and blessing us with your caring concern over these years. Lord, Help My Pastor by, Patricia Bankhead Lord, help my Pastor, I pray There are many obstacles in his way Every burden help him to bear Dear Lord, keep him in Your tender care Give him strength and the ability To care for the church and his family Lord, there is so much he has to do He can't do alone, he surely needs You So shelter him in Your loving arms Safe from all danger and unseen harm Guard his mouth, his heart and mind Remove every tittle of sin and pride Keep him in the hour of temptation May he not be moved by Satan's persuasion Remove all fears, Lord, remove all doubt By Your Spirit, Lord, be in his mouth So that he will speak a word that is due And bring Your dear people closer to You In Jesus Name, Amen. Pastor Kevin, We welcome you and your family to Community UMC. We look forward to embracing you in our circle of love and allowing you to shepherd us forward. As we celebrate our 50 th year in the Elyria community, we pray that we continue to grow in the Lord and thank God that we have you to guide us forward. Thank you and bless you as you join the community of Community UMC! Volume 45, Issue 6&7

Pastor s Page Time to say good-bye... As I write this, my final Clarion column as your pastor, it is Memorial Day weekend. In a few short weeks (July 1 st ), I will no longer be your pastor, as Rosemary and I enter the world of many of you retirement. It seems like only yesterday that we were on a whirlwind house-hunting tour with Connie Sweda also over Memorial Day weekend after receiving confirmation of our appointment to CUMC a week earlier. Could that possibly have been 10 years ago??? Where have the years gone? Like many of you also, we ve experienced the joy of new life, as we welcomed several grandchildren into our family. And we ve also known the sorrow of terminal illnesses and death - of my father and Rosemary s mother, as well as dear friends both here and elsewhere. And YOU, beloved, have been there for us, even as we have sought to be there for you - through times of joy and times of sorry. We love you each dearly - as the "family" that you have been for us! But now our pastoral relationship must come to an end, in order for us each to grow and experience the "new thing" that The Lord has waiting for us (Isa. 43:18-19). We know that you will embrace The Coleman s as you new pastoral family" - just as you have us. As for our relationship from this time forward, we will always hold you in our hearts as dearest "friends" - friends as the words of the popular song, to the right, express. We look forward to continuing that friendship in the years ahead. Feel free to call, visit or us. As many of you are aware already, we plan to sell our home in Elyria and move to Stark County in retirement near our youngest son and family (Jackson Township) and nearer to our daughter and family, "FRIENDS" by Michael W. Smith & Deborah D. Smith (words adapted by Don Lare) Packing up the dreams God planted In the fertile soil of you. Can't believe the hope's He's granted Means a chapter in our life is through. But we'll keep you close, as always. It won't even seem we've gone. Cause our hearts in big and small ways, Will keep the love that keeps us strong. CHORUS in Dellroy. This time, the house-hunting is taking much longer than 10 years ago - but as of this past Thursday, we believe we ve finally found the home God has for us! Please pray that the home inspection and appraisal are favorable and that our loan is approved! Please also keep us in prayer for strength for the packing, getting our home here ready to sell, a quick sale at a fair price (despite the major loss we ll be taking, from the housing market decline), and for our move - hopefully near the end of July. When we do move from Elyria, we will be sure to let Sherry know our address, phone and for the directory, Clarion and bulletin, so you can keep in touch! Many years ago I ran across an article in a church newsletter (Trinity United Methodist Church, Albuquerque, NM) that speaks my final word to you, as your pastor, better than I ever could. I hope you will take these commandments seriously, and in the spirit of love in which they are meant:

TEN COMMANDMENTS from the OUTGOING PASTOR 1. THOU SHALT NOT compare the new pastor and the old pastor, for verily, they are two different people. 2. THOU SHALT NOT say to the new pastor: `But our last minister did it this way.' 3. THOU SHALT NOT call back the outgoing pastor for funerals and weddings; yea, those are the responsibilities of ministry for the new pastor. 4. THOU SHALT NOT send to the former pastor, nor in any way communicate with him, matters of gossip or problems. 5. THOU SHALT NOT withhold thine exceeding great capacity of love for the new pastor and his family. Thou shalt love them, as thou has loved us, and even more abundantly. 6. THOU SHALT NOT prejudge persons and things for the new pastor. He will have the ability to judge for himself in wisdom and in truth. 7. THOU SHALT NOT fail to review the new pastor's salary annually, and increase it, as a symbol of love and appreciation. 8. THOU SHALT NOT speak too often of thy former pastor, and when thou dost, may it be kindly. 9. THOU SHALT NOT forget the new pastoral family at Christmas and on their birthdays with thoughtful remembrances. 10. THOU SHALT NOT forget to pray for the new pastor and his family regularly. May the Lord Jesus Christ bless and keep you always in His love and care. And may we each grow to be more and more like Him, as we journey toward that glorious reunion in Heaven! Note from Rosemary on the Annual Conference Retirement Service Pastor Don's Retirement Service will be held at Lakeside during Annual Conference on Monday night, June 15th at 7:30 at Hoover Auditorium. We would love for you to come but because of the drive up there and trying to find a close parking spot which is very hard, we invite you to watch it through live stream on your home computer. Right before that time, go to the East Ohio Conference website and look where it mentions about viewing events from Conference and live stream and then just follow the directions. I hope it will come in good for you. It will probably be a lengthy service since at least 41 other Pastors are retiring.

Reach Out Committee Should I Give Someone a Gospel Tract? There is some debate about the effectiveness of giving someone a gospel tract. Will they read it? Will they embrace the truth that it conveys? Or, will they simply throw it away with no change of heart or mind? Of course, we can t say for sure what someone will do with a tract once he or she receives it. People are at different places in their spiritual journey and in their receptiveness to messages of faith. But for the person who does read a well-written gospel tract, at least it will be a seed sown in the garden of their heart. And who can say how God may use that seed to grow their faith and lead them to Christ. Consider the following story of Japanese air commander Mitsuo Fuchida who led the air strike on Pearl Harbor. It was still early on the morning of December 7, 1941, when 183 Japanese planes left American warships burning in Pearl Harbor. In the skies above, the air commander of the Japanese strike force was safely flying back to his ship to revel in the overwhelming victory. The commander s name was Mitsuo Fuchida. After the war, Mitsuo was so troubled by the strife that had led to the bombing of Pearl Harbor that he wrote a book entitled No More Pearl Harbors. It was a warning and a plea to pursue peace. But although he preached peace, Mitsuo had no clue to the source of power that could generate such peace. On a trip to Tokyo, Mitsuo was handed a pamphlet entitled "I Was a Prisoner of Japan," written by former prisoner of war Jacob DeShazer. Locked in a Japanese prison for 40 months, DeShazer almost went insane because of the brutality of the guards. But he happened to get a copy of the Bible in solitary confinement and after reading it became a Christian. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, DeShazer found that his hate for the Japanese had turned to love. After the war he returned to Japan to tell the people there about the love of Jesus Christ, and part of his witness included distributing tracts that told of his miraculous rebirth. From that tract Mitsuo discovered the source of power that could turn hatred into peace power that he was looking for. He bought a copy of the New Testament in Japanese. By the time he had read about Jesus crucifixion in Luke 23, Mitsuo had trusted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. A simple gospel tract had played a vital role in leading to Christ the commander of the Japanese planes that attacked Pearl Harbor. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GIVE A GOSPEL TRACT TO SOMEONE, HERE S WHAT AMERICAN TRACT SOCIETY HAS TO SAY: Tracts can be one of the best ways to have a personal witness in our impersonal world. They travel farther, last longer, say it better, and cost less than any other method of evangelism. They can initiate, supplement, and compliment our personal witness. But certain principles must be kept in mind to get the best results. Here are ten rules for tract users. PRAY WHEN YOU DISTRIBUTE TRACTS You cannot win a soul to Christ, nor can any tract. Only the Holy Spirit can do this work. So be sure to pray while you work. Ask the Lord to lead you to the right person. Ask Him to help you select the right tract. And ask Him to help the reader understand the message.

GIVE TRACTS THAT ARE APPROPRIATE A tract should fit the needs of the person it is given to. Each person is different, so try to select a tract that seems appropriate for that individual. TALK WITH THE PERSON, IF POSSIBLE This will help you to learn his needs and stimulate his interest. Try to steer the conversation around so you can offer him your tract. If you can get him to ask for it, so much the better. At least, get him to agree to read it before you give it to him. OFFER TRACTS WITH A FRIENDLY SPIRIT A frowning face or an argumentative approach will lose a reading for your tract. It s amazing how seldom a tract will be rejected if it is offered with a genuinely friendly smile. DON T FORCE TRACTS ON PEOPLE As a rule, when tracts are distributed promiscuously to everyone you meet, many will be discarded. Usually it s better to distribute a dozen tracts carefully, prayerfully, and judiciously than to hand out a hundred tracts indiscriminately. USE ATTRACTIVE TRACTS Since our society is so accustomed to full-color literature, most people only read what is appealing. Likewise, tracts should immediately catch the interest of the reader. Use tracts that are well written and free of grammatical errors or typographical mistakes. USE POSITIVE, CONSTRUCTIVE TRACTS Avoid tracts that attack any religion or group. Our job is not to attack others, but to present the positive truth of the Gospel. FIND NEW WAYS TO USE TRACTS Use tracts in business and personal letters, when paying bills, with greeting cards, and in books you lend friends. Give them to a sales clerk or repairman. Take one when you visit a friend in the hospital. Be creative. Use a variety of tracts and find new ways to distribute them. KEEP YOUR TRACTS IN GOOD CONDITION Make sure your tracts are clean and fresh when you hand them out. A day or two in a pocket or purse will make them dog-eared and unusable. You can buy a simulated-leather tract wallet from the American Tract Society that will keep your tracts attractive and accessible. BEGIN NOW TO USE A TRACT A DAY Don t wait for the time when you will be able to distribute hundreds of tracts. Begin using at least one tract each day in your normal routine, and you will be amazed as you see the Lord bless your work and give you satisfaction doing it. Get Started Today By Visiting The Tract Display In The Church Narthex!

Library News Tenative Library Hours for the Summer: Sundays mornings 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. Rosemary will be here as normal in June. In July, you will be able to check out Resources on your own using the outer room in the Library. The office area will be closed as a Librarian will not be available. If you need a Resource from that area, please check with Mary Brown (call her cell phone) or Pat Gregory (at home) during the week or see them on Sunday. Please check out the item by using the form provided and then put the form in the basket that is provided. The date that the item is due will be noted on the form. All Resources taken out can be put on one form. Also you can check out Resources from the display in the Narthex using the same process and putting the slip behind the display on the table. Resources can be returned to the box outside the Library or in the Library or in the box under the table in the Narthex. Tuesday mornings -12:30 - June 2, 16 and 30, July 7 and 21 Please check with Sherry before coming to the Church to use the Library to make sure it is open or check for the Library sign at the Main church door. A Librarian will be available at those times but the hours and days may change. Winners for our April drawing were Shelly Cook and Laura Hill. The final drawing will be at the end of May. Thank you to Sandee Daggett and Jo Poling for donating Resources recently. WELCOME TO: Our new LIBRARY TEAM Mary Brown, Pat Gregory, Lois Argiro, Julie Knight, Nevada Hutaki, Sherry Dangremond and Chris Wagers - The job will be a shared team with many doing various parts of the job on an as needed basis. We hope you will continue to use the Library even though changes in the hours and days plus staff will be made. Please bear with them as they learn their new responsibilities and adjust to me not being there. As you plan your Summer, think about spending a little time each day reading a book as a family or each family member reading a separate book. Try reading minutes per day and before you know it the book will be finished. A side benefit is that you will have started a life long habit. We have Books, Books on CD, DVD (Movies for all ages plus Bible oriented materials) plus Music. We have resources for all ages which are free to take out and use for three weeks. Our collection includes the latest Christian Fiction and Mysteries plus Books for Children and many Non-fiction in areas relating to your faith. FIVE GOOD REASONS TO READ: Reading makes you smart and helps you focus. Reading is entertaining and economical. (Our Resources are all free.) Reading helps you slow down long enough to hear from God especially when you use Christian resources. Reading is one of the things God created your mind to do. Reading strengthens your imagination. As I write my final Library article, I come with a heavy heart. Sadness, as it means that after 8 1/2 years of holding this position, my time as the Librarian at CUMC has come to an end. While here, we have had many changes in the Library re-arranging the Library by adding more shelves to accommodate our growing collection in all areas especially the Fiction area with many series plus new authors. Also at your suggestion, we started a Christian Mystery area which many have enjoyed.

I am happy and feel blessed to have been a part of the CUMC Library team and use my God given gifts and talents to help others strengthen and deepen their faith through Christian Resources as God has done in my life through the years. Without God s help giving me the energy, skills and guidance in selecting the resources, I would not have been able to serve in this role. Our Library team has tried to build on the legacy of the Library that was started many years ago. Without their hard work and foresight plus guidance from God, we would not have the Library that we do have today. CUMC should feel very blessed and proud to have the Library collection that we do today. Praise God!!! I plan to spend time reading Books from my new Public Library and hopefully Church Library too. My days of being a Church Librarian are over for now unless God leads me in that direction again. I ve had a long career with 4 Church Libraries as the Librarian plus led a UMW reading program for many years. Happy Reading & God bless you!! A BIG THANK YOU TO: Ame Stahl, Jane Miller, Chris Wagers, Mary King, Nevada Hutaki, Lois Argiro, and Julie Knight for being part of the Library team over the past 8 ½ years. All those who have used our Library through the years and especially the new people in the past 6 months or so who have started checking out materials. Keep up the Reading!!! All those who have donated Resources directly to the Library or those which came from the Ladies through the Rummage Sales. Also to the Ladies for their donations to the Library Fund which helped add many of the DVD s we currently have. Education In order to carry out our congregational mission to nurture and bring up children knowing the Lord we must have teachers, nursery personnel and helpers. Further, we should have the required number of teachers for each class size, according to our Child Protection Policy. We are in need of additional teachers for both Sunday School hour at AM and especially for two more teachers for Growing -up Church during Worship Hour. Our current teachers would like to be able to attend Worship at least some of the month. If we had a teacher for each Sunday and a substitute this would be possible. Linda Brunson would very much like to retire after a lifetime of teaching. Helpers are needed in every class and especially in the nursery. We are asking that anyone who could give one Sunday. or more to contact Sherry in the office any morning or by . Or call or Sara Bennett, or salobe3@gmail.com. Men would be great teachers and most welcome. Please think seriously about offering - this is a serious need. Sara Bennett, Education Chairperson
