2 Page 2 Sunday Connections April 15, 2018 Third Sunday of Easter A Word From... Luke s report of the Last Supper and the meals that Jesus shared after his Resurrection unveil for us the significance of the Eucharist. Having shared a meal with his disciples, Jesus now uncovers for them the significance of what was written about him in the Scriptures. So, too, our celebration of the Mass is an encounter with Jesus, through the Word and the Sacrament of the Eucharist. As Jesus commissions his disciples to be witnesses to what Scriptures foretold, our celebration of the Eucharist commissions us. Like the disciples, we are sent to announce the good news of Jesus forgiveness of sins. + SAINTS AND READINGS OF THE WEEK First Reading: Acts of the Apostles 3:13-15,17-19 Peter preaches that Jesus has been raised from the dead and calls upon the people to repent. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 4:2,4,7-8,9 A prayer seeking God s favor Second Reading: 1 John 2:1-5a Those who know God keep his commandments. Gospel Reading: Luke 24:35-48 Jesus appears again to his disciples and shares a meal with them. Background on the Gospel Reading: On the third Sunday of Easter, we continue to hear Gospel accounts of Jesus appearances to his disciples following his Resurrection. Today s reading, taken from the Gospel of Luke, follows immediately after the report of Jesus' appearance to his disciples on the road to Emmaus. This is the event being recounted by the disciples in the opening verse of today s Gospel. Consistently in the reports of Jesus post-resurrection appearances, Jesus greets his disciples with the words, Peace be with you. This is a most appropriate greeting. The disciples have witnessed the death of someone they loved, and they now fear for their own lives as well. Peace is what they need more than anything else. Jesus often connects this greeting of peace with another gift forgiveness. In today s Gospel, this connection is made in the final verses. Even as they hear Jesus greeting of peace, the disciples are startled and terrified. They are uncertain about what to make of the figure before them and, quite understandably, they mistake Jesus for a ghost. Yet the figure before them is not a ghost; Jesus invites them to experience his resurrected body with their senses, to look and to touch. The figure before them is flesh and bone, still bearing the marks of crucifixion. Although the disciples cannot forget his suffering and death, peace begins to take root in their hearts, as their fears turn to joy and amazement. As further proof of his identity and of his resurrected body, Jesus eats with his disciples. The disciples have known Jesus best through the meals that he has shared with them. Descriptions of these meals are a defining element of Luke s Gospel. By eating with his disciples after his Resurrection, Jesus recalls all these meals, and most importantly, he recalls the Last Supper. It is challenging and even difficult, in many respects, yet intense joy comes to those who take the risk to live as Christian stewards. Women and men who seek to live as stewards learn that "all things work for good for those who love God" (Rom 8:28). After Jesus, we look to Mary as an ideal steward. As the Mother of Christ, she lived her ministry in a spirit of fidelity and service; she responded generously to the call. We must ask ourselves: Do we also wish to be disciples of Jesus Christ and Christian stewards of our world and our Church? Central to our human and Christian vocations, as well as to the unique vocation each one of us receives from God, is that we be good stewards of the gifts we possess. God gives us this divine-human workshop, this world and Church of ours. The Spirit shows us the way. Stewardship is a part of that journey. +

In taking the cross, they commit themselves to pray during the week for an increase in holy vocations, and the gift of our priests, sisters, brothers, and deacons. All are invited to participate. Prayers of the Faithful The Third Sunday of Easter, April 15, 2018 As people of faith we seek to dwell in the house of the Lord. With confidence that the Lord will hear our prayers, we now present our petitions. For the Church throughout the world, that through her teachings and witness, many may embrace the truth of Jesus. For the priests serving in the Diocese of Sacramento that they will be fearless in preaching repentance for the forgiveness of sins. For all those called to the priesthood or consecrated life in the Diocese of Sacramento, that their vocation will be confirmed in the breaking of bread. That we have the courage to do the work God has sent us to do, knowing that this is the true path to peace and joy. For those in authority in Government and commerce, that they make their decisions based on prayerful discernment of God's will. That as we recognize Jesus in broken bread, so we may recognize Him in broken lives, including those we consider burdensome, inconvenient, and unwanted. For all those who suffer in body, mind or spirit that they may be cared for with gentleness and patience. That our brothers and sisters who have died may share in the heavenly banquet prepared for them by the Lord. Remembering the Sick in Prayer Our Priests are on Retreat April 16th, 17th and 18th. NEW Financial Peace University (FPU) Classes BEGINNING May 17 and May 19th: Financial Peace University or FPU, is a step by step, personal finance program designed to teach people how to get out of debt, stay out of debt and become great stewards of God s financial blessings. AT the end of the first two classes - our groups saved an additional 256, and paid off 35, in debt. Many families also increased their giving. And they did that in only 9 weeks. 17 families are now on the road to financial wellbeing. You must be over 18 to attend the course. 1 Timothy 6:18-19: Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. Divine Mercy Spring Cup 2018 Saturday, April 28th for Children Ages y.o. Beginning with Mass at 8:30 AM The kids will spend the day in a heated, fun-filled competition of Catholic-themed events.
