2 Page 2 A Word From... Gregory of Nyssa, also known as Gregory Nyssen (Greek: Γρηγόριος Νύσσης; c. 335 c. 395), was bishop of Nyssa from 372 to 376 and from 378 until his death. He is venerated as a saint in Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, Lutheranism, and Anglicanism. Gregory lacked the administrative ability of his brother Basil or the contemporary influence of Gregory of Nazianzus, but he was an erudite theologian who made significant contributions to the doctrine of the Trinity and the Nicene Creed. Thought comes first, then words, since our words express openly the interior conclusions of the mind. Finally, after thoughts and words, comes action, for our deeds carry out what the mind has conceived. So when one of these results in our acting or speaking or thinking, we must make sure that all our thoughts, words and deeds will not fall short of the nobility of their implications. What then must we do, we who have been found worthy of the name of Christ? Each of us must examine his thoughts, words and deeds, to see whether they are directed toward Christ or are turned away from him. The examination is carried out in various ways. Our deeds or our thoughts or our words are not in harmony with Christ if they issue from passion. They then bear the mark of the enemy who smears the pearl of the heart with the slime of passion, dimming and even destroying the luster of the precious stone. On the other hand, if they are free from and untainted by every passionate inclination, they are directed toward Christ, the author and source of peace. He is like a pure untainted stream. If you draw from him the thoughts in your mind and the inclinations of your heart, you will show a likeness to Christ, your source and origin, as the gleaming water in a jar resembles the flowing water from which it was obtained. For the purity of Christ and the purity that is manifest in our hearts are identical. Christ s purity, however, is the fountainhead; ours has its source in him and flows out of him. Our life is stamped with the beauty of his thought. The inner and the outer man are harmonized in a kind of music. The mind of Christ is the controlling influence that inspires us to moderation and goodness in our behavior. 3 Page 3 Pray without ceasing-...i Thessalonians 5:17 RCIA 2018 Registration is Open "How great is the value of conversation with Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, for there is nothing more consoling on earth, nothing more efficacious for advancing along the road of holiness!" (Pope Paul VI, Mysterium Fidei) Are you or someone you know, still searching for your Treasure in the Field, or the Perfect Pearl? In Matthew 13, Jesus used these two antidotes in his Parables about the Kingdom of Heaven. In the Gospel, Jesus describes the actions of people in pursuit of happiness, their efforts to obtain the desired objective which is the reward promised to us by Jesus of eternal life with him and the Father in Heaven. If you know of someone considering joining the Catholic Church or a baptized Catholic who needs to complete their sacraments, now is the time to be a good disciple and get them to contact the Parish office and enroll in this year s upcoming RCIA program. Our first sessions start Wednesdays 5 September at 7:00PM. Stop at the RCIA Table in the Narthex August 20/21 next weekend to find out more information. In response to the scandals that have recently come to light in the Church we have decided to extend our usual First Friday Adoration for the month of September. Eucharistic Adoration will begin after the 8:30 am Mass on Friday, September 7th and continue until after the recitation of the Rosary. About 6:20 PM after the Rosary is completed the Blessed Sacrament will be reposed for the celebration of the Mass. After Mass the Blessed Sacrament will once again be exposed for Adoration, which will continue until 7:45 AM on Saturday, September 8th, the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Retreat Adoration -Beginning Friday August 31 after 6:30 pm Mass through Sunday September 2 at 4:00 pm A 24x7 -Holy Experience! If you would like to join our Welcome Retreat Men in part of this most holy retreat experience, then you First Friday and First Saturday Adoration September 7th and 8th! should come to the Adoration Chapel and pray through-out the Welcome weekend. Prayers of the Faithful, Sunday, August 26, 2018 As brothers and sisters in Christ who trust in God's wisdom and love, we present our prayers and petitions for the needs of the world. That the Church may be ever-grateful for the gift of faith and may ever grow and respond to the word of God proclaimed in the Gospels. For the priests serving in the Diocese of Sacramento, that each of them will be given the grace to live their priesthood according to the mind and heart of Christ. For all those called to the priesthood or consecrated life in the Diocese of Sacramento, that the recent scandals in the Church will encourage them to deeper holiness in service to Christ and his Church. That our Lord Jesus Christ, who healed the sick and is compassionate with those who are burdened, lift up those who have been abused by the ones who betrayed the trust placed in them. That the pope and all the clergy may bring the faithful to a deeper knowledge and love of God through their preaching, teaching and holy life. For all parishioners who make a sacrificial, proportionate, and generous gift of their time, talent, and treasure, that their offering will be always an act of love. That we may echo Peter's profession of faith, that Christ is indeed the Son of God and he alone has dominion over the precious gift of human life. That the sick may be comforted, strengthened, and healed and those who have died may be welcomed into God's heavenly kingdom. Remembering the Sick in Prayer Father God, we lift up all those who are facing illness today. We ask that you would bring healing, comfort and peace to their bodies. There will be no second collection. Angels of Mercy We were able to provide food for over 50 households in August. This is due to your continued generosity. But the pantry is depleted.
