2 Page 2 By Deacon James Ogbonna It is during Lent, more than any other time of year, that God invites us to change our ways. We are freed from spiritual bondage and cleansed of our sins if we repent and cooperate with Him. In our readings today it is clear that His desire for us is to change. In our first reading, Exodus 3:1-8A, 13-15, God tells Moses He has witnessed the affliction of his people in Egypt and heard their cries. He goes on to tell Moses that He has plans to rescue them from the slave driving Egyptians and to deliver them to a land flowing with milk and honey. Moses is commissioned to reassure God s enslaved people in Egypt of His nearness and saving power. Furthermore Moses is directed by the Lord to lead the Israelites into liberation and the Promised Land. The scriptures tell us about the Israelites long, hard journey to freedom. They gave into temptation in the desert. They grumbled and complained. Many did not make it through the expedition due to their disobedience to the will of God. We might suffer the same fate and fail to complete our journey to Heaven if we disobey the commandments of the Lord. In the Exodus we are reminded that God doesn t give up on us. We are continuously invited to seek Him. Despite our transgressions He never stops loving us. His Divine Presence is fully manifested in Jesus; who like the Father, calls us to repentance. In our Gospel reading, Luke 13:1-9; Jesus s primary message is, if you do not repent, you will all perish. In the parable of the barren fig tree we find the gardener in our lives, Jesus. He pleads that we not be cut down, but through his propagation and promise, he be allowed to cultivate us so that we may bear fruit in the future. In Christ s Church we are nurtured in God s Word and through the blessed Sacraments. In prayer and adoration we discern the will of God in our lives so that we may continue our journey to heaven, take others with us, and flourish. Much like the one year reprieve in our Lord s parable, the Lenten season is our second chance to bear fruit. During these 40 days before we celebrate the Resurrection; we commit to the Three Pillars of Lent, Almsgiving, Prayer, and Fasting and we obey the associated rules. We reflect upon the sacrifice and Passion of Christ. Through our penitence and Acts of Contrition we become fertile ground, and God s word in our lives begin to bear fruit. We recognize his love for us and try to reciprocate that love by living a righteous life. Salvation is not automatic. Saint Paul, in his first letter (our second reading) to the Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12, cautioned the people of Corinth about feeling self- important and becoming complacent in matters of faith. He admonishes the faithful, past and present, to take care lest we fall like the Israelites did in the desert on the way to the Promised Land. God s chosen people were baptized by passing the waters of the Red Sea, received their Eucharist by eating the Manna from Heaven and drank of the spiritual drink ; the water from the rock. All of those chosen by God benefit from the special graces of our Lord s gifts; yet complain and grumble in our impatience to see the Promised Land. St Paul warns us that whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall. God did not turn a blind eye toward the plight of the Israelites and He does A Word From... not turn a blind eye toward the great pain and sadness we suffer today. He is not uncaring or indifferent to what is happening in our day, nor does He delight in the suffering or death of His people. Air disasters, earthquakes, fire, flood and the senseless massacre of hundreds of the faithful in their places of worship may make us question, Where is God? Where is His intervention? In today s Gospel reading, Jesus responds to these horrors, Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were greater sinners than all other Galileans? By no means! Those who undergo unfortunate circumstances are by no means the worst of sinners or the best of saints. Jesus enjoins all people to repentance so that when faced with trials and tribulations, they may be cleansed, cultivated and will continue to bear good fruit. My brothers and sister, the word of God says "if today you hear his voice harden not your heart". The voice of the Lord is heard in our readings today. We all are being called to change our ways and allow the Word of God to liberate and transform us. We are being reminded that in addition to baptism, church attendance and the Sacraments; we are to live in faith, we must allow the Word of God to richly influence our daily lives and lead us into doing His will. We must live morally, mind our business ethics, cultivate loving relationships, look for the face of Jesus in the poor, and remain vigilant in paying forward good deeds. We must not become complacent in matters of faith, but actively live our faith in taking the best of care of the least of our brothers and sisters. My dear people, as we progress in our Lenten observance, let us thank God for giving us another opportunity to reform and change our lives. Let us pray that He will help us change our ways and help us make the best use of this season of grace to repent and convert. This season let us work to cultivate in ourselves the mind and heart of Christ, bear good fruit and repent. + Stewardship Bulletin Reflection March 24, 2019 Today s Gospel passage reminds us that life is precious and the gift of time on this earth is just that a gift. None of us knows how much time will be granted to us, so it is urgent that we use this gift intentiona lly t o g lorify G o d a n d s e r v e o u r n e ighb o r. Jesus offers the parable of the fig tree to further illustrate this truth. The owner of the orchard came searching for fruit on a fig tree he had had planted in his orchard. Finding no fruit on the tree after three years, he told the gardener to cut it down. But the gardener intercedes and asks for one more year to cultivate and fertilize the tree in hopes it would bear fruit in the future. The fig tree was not dying; it simply wasn t doing much of anything at all. Can this be said of us and our lives as well? The season of Lent is a time to reflect carefully on the way we spend our time. Do we give first priority to God, tending to our spiritual growth and sacramental life with diligence? Do we give next priority to our loved ones, focusing intentionally on them each day without distractions from phones, screens or thoughts of work? If not, now is the moment to repent of our waste of time or of misplaced priorities on our use of time. God is merciful but just. Let s turn to Him and ask Him to make our lives fruitful while we still have time to do so.

Friday, March 29th, 8:30 am through Saturday, March 30th 8:30 am We have passed the halfway mark of our journey through Lent. Yes, we have Twenty Four Hours for the Lord coming up on Friday morning March 29th to Saturday morning March 30th. On Friday morning we will begin with a Mass at 8:30 am with the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on the Altar for Adoration until Saturday morning to conclude with a Mass at 8:30 am. The Twenty Four Hours for The Lord program is as follows: 8:30 am Mass and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament 9:30 am Confession will begin when priests are available 3:00 pm Hour of Mercy 6:25 pm Return the Blessed Sacrament to the Tabernacle before Mass Starts 7:00 pm Stations of the Cross 8:00 pm Blessed Sacrament on the Altar to continue Adoration until Benediction at 7:45 am Saturday 8:00 am Saturday morning Rosary 8:30 am Mass and the conclusion of the 24 Hours For the Lord Prayers of the Faithful, Sunday, March 24, 2019 As we continue our Lenten journey, let us present our needs to God with greater confidence than ever. That the Church and all who teach God's word may proclaim the need for repentance and ongoing conversion. For the priests serving in this Diocese that as they live out their priesthood they are always aware that where they work is holy ground. For all those called to the priesthood or consecrated life in the Diocese of Sacramento that they will come to know that the same God who called Moses to service is calling them. As God s Stewards we will always remember that our time on earth is a gift and that we should use this gift intentionally to glorify God and serve our neighbor. That government leaders may hear the call of God to lead people in the ways of justice and peace. That the catechumens of the Church may be blessed with deeper understanding of God's word and holiness of life as they prepare for their baptism this Easter. That God, who always hears the cry of His people who are being oppressed, may enable us to hear those cries and to save the poor, the vulnerable, and the unborn. That those who are ill may be strengthened by the love of family and friends and those who have died may be purified of sin and welcomed to the glory of heaven.
