2 Page 2 Sunday Connections March 4, 2018, The Third Sunday of Lent First Reading: Exodus 20:1-17 (or Exodus 20:1-3,7-8,12-17) Moses is given the Ten Commandments. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 19:8,9,10,11 A prayer of praise to God who gives us his commandments Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:22-25 Paul preaches Christ crucified to the Corinthians. Gospel Reading: John 2:13-25 Jesus drives out the moneychangers from the Temple and says that he will destroy the temple and raise it up again. Background on the Gospel Reading: In today s Gospel we read about how Jesus overturned the tables of the merchants and the moneychangers in the Temple at Jerusalem. In order to understand the relevance of Jesus action, we must learn more about the activities that were going on in the temple area. Worship at the Temple in Jerusalem included animal sacrifice, and merchants sold animals to worshipers. Moneychangers exchanged Roman coins, which bore the image of the Roman emperor, for the temple coins that were needed to pay the temple tax. Jesus action at the Temple in Jerusalem is recorded in all four Gospels and is often understood to be among the events that led to Jesus arrest and Crucifixion. The Gospel of John, however, places this event much earlier in Jesus public ministry than do the Synoptic Gospels. In John s Gospel this event occurs at the very beginning of Jesus ministry, after his first miracle at the wedding feast at Cana. We must read the Gospel of John carefully, especially in its presentation of Jesus relationship to Judaism. The Gospel of John tends to reflect greater tension and animosity between Jesus and the Jewish authorities than the Synoptic Gospels. The Gospel of John was the last of the four Gospels to be written, and its narrative reflects the growing divide between the Jewish community and the early Christian community. Thus, greater emphasis on the distinction between Christianity and Judaism is found in John s Gospel. A Word From... Reflecting upon the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem (A.D. 70), John recalls Jesus cleansing of the Temple and uses that story to interpret this later event. John explains to his audience, an early Christian community, that temple worship would no longer be necessary because it was surpassed in the passion, death, and Resurrection of Jesus. With greater frequency than the other Evangelists, John intersperses post-resurrection reflections of this Christian community in his narrative. After clearing the Temple of the merchants and the moneychangers, John s Gospel tells us that the people asked for a sign of Jesus authority to do such an audacious act. In response, Jesus predicted his death and Resurrection. Throughout John s Gospel, the language of signs is distinctive. Jesus miracles are called signs, and the people look to these signs for proof of his authority. Here we learn that the sign par excellence will be Jesus passion, death, and Resurrection. During Lent we reflect upon the meaning of this sign for us and for our world. We might take this opportunity to consider the quality of our prayer and worship. In our prayers we seek to deepen our relationship with the person of Christ. In our worship with the community, we gather to experience anew the passion, death, and Resurrection of Jesus and its significance in our lives. Christ promises to be present with us when we gather for prayer. + stewardship Noun: stew ard ship \ ˈstü-ˈrd-ˈship, ˈstyü- ; ˈst(y)uˈrd- Definition: In biblical usage the management of whatever a person is entrusted with, not only to preserve but profitably administer for his master, ultimately for God. Christ proposed the faithful steward as model for the responsible Christian (Luke 12:42). This is the ultimate lesson of stewardship: that a human being is not owner but only custodian of God's gifts in this world, to use them and produce with them the fruits of eternal life. (Etym. Old English stigweard, "keeper of the hall": stig, hall + weard, keeper.) To Be a Christian Steward: A Summary of the U.S. Bishops' Pastoral Letter on Stewardship: "As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace" (1 Pt 4:10). What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As Christian stewards, we receive God's gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. + Next week: Disciples as Stewards

Prayers of the Faithful The Third Sunday of Lent March 4, 2018 We are called to be a holy people. Turning to the one true God, we offer our prayers in faith and trust. That the Church may continue to courageously proclaim the Gospel message in response to the needs of the world. For the priests serving in the Diocese of Sacramento, that they will always give due reverence to the House of God in which they serve. For all those called to the priesthood or consecrated life in the Diocese of Sacramento, that they will always look to Christ crucified to guide them along the way he has chosen for them. That during this Lenten season, we may open our hearts to the needs of our Parish and be reminded of the ways in which we can serve. For all those who are preparing for baptism on Easter night. That in obedience to the command "Thou shall not kill," all nations will abolish the practice of abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia. That the sick may be healed, the dying consoled, and the departed welcomed into eternal life. Remembering the Sick in Prayer Father God, we lift up all those who are facing illness today. We ask that you would bring healing, comfort and peace to their bodies. Calm their fears and let them experience the healing power of Your love. In Jesus name. Amen Please pray for all of the Sacramento Diocese Priests. To see who has signed up and to those who have not signed up yet; please stop by and check out our SIGN - UP CORNER at the Narthex counter top. Please take the Vocation Cross home with you. We need families to accept this prayer mission at all Masses Saturday Vigil, Sunday 7:30, 9:30 and 12:30 Masses Is God inviting you to Pray for the Vocations? Remembering the Military in Prayer This is the prayer I say tonight; it is for my loved one who must fight. This prayer is not for this one alone, but for all the military far from home. I ask you Lord, to keep them safe and sound on their way to where they are bound. We love those that are asked to fight. Please Lord keep them safe for us tonight.
