2 Page 2 Matthew 15:21-28 Jesus heals the daughter of the Canaanite woman because of her great faith. A Word From... From: sunday-connection/20th-sundayin-ordinary-time-a-sundayconnection Background on the Gospel Reading: Today we move ahead in our reading of Matthew s Gospel. Last week we read about Jesus walking on the water and the disciples confession of faith that Jesus is the Son of God. If we were reading Matthew s entire Gospel, we would have read about Jesus debate with the Pharisees about Jewish purity laws. Jesus argues that it is not what goes into us that makes us unclean; he is referring to the strict Jewish dietary rules. Instead our words and our actions what comes out of us make us unclean because they emerge from a heart that is unclean. Knowing about Jesus debate with the Pharisees helps us to understand today s Gospel. In fact the story heightens the surprise and shock we feel as we hear Jesus exchange with the Canaanite woman. The woman, who is not Jewish, approaches Jesus, requesting that he heal her demon-possessed daughter. At first Jesus ignores her; he says nothing. The disciples ask Jesus to send her away, and Jesus agrees, remarking that he was sent to minister to the Jews alone. The woman persists, paying homage to Jesus, and yet Jesus denies her request again. He even insults her, using a Jewish word of derision for Gentiles, dog. But the woman cleverly turns Jesus insult into an affirmation of faith. Only then does Jesus grant her request and heal her daughter. Jesus unresponsiveness to this woman may strike us as uncharacteristic or shocking. Yet in Matthew s Gospel, Jesus ministry is directed primarily to the people of Israel. At only a very few points, such as the one found in today s Gospel, do we find Jesus anticipating the later Christian ministry to the rest of the world. Behind Matthew s text we can hear this early Christian community s struggle to understand how God s selection of Israel is consistent with two events: Israel s rejection of Jesus and the Gentiles acceptance of Jesus. Just as Jesus was surprised by the faith expressed by the Canaanite woman, so too the first Christians were surprised that the Gentiles would receive the salvation God offered through Christ. In today s second reading from Paul s letter to the Romans, we hear the apostle Paul considering this same concern. The faith that the Canaanite woman expresses is an affirmation of and confidence in God s abundant mercy. Yes, salvation comes through Israel, but it overflows for the benefit of all. + The Beauty of the Mass: A Walk Through The Worship of God. From prayer-and-worship/the-mass/ upload/celebrating-the-lordsd a y. p d f a n d h t t p : / / -andwor sh ip / t he - ma ss / g ene ra l - instruction-of-the-roman-missal/ girm-chapter-2.cfm What is the Mass?: On Sunday, we gather as the Body of Christ to celebrate the Lord s Day, the day of Christ s Resurrection: As the first day of the week (Mk 16:2) it recalls the first creation; and as the eighth day, which follows the Sabbath, it symbolizes the new creation ushered in by the Resurrection of Christ. Thus, it has become for Christians the first of all days and of all feasts. It is the day of the Lord in which he with his Passover fulfilled the spiritual truth of the Jewish Sabbath and proclaimed man s eternal rest in God. (Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 452) The Scriptures tell us that Jesus rose on the first day of the week the day following the Jewish Sabbath. Shortly after daybreak, the women found the tomb empty and Jesus risen from the dead. Jesus death and Resurrection opened for us the doors of salvation. Sharing in Jesus death in Baptism, we hope to share in his Resurrection. We become a new creation in Christ. It is that new creation which we celebrate on Sunday: This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice in it and be glad. (Ps 118:24) Each Sunday is a little Easter a celebration of the central mysteries of our faith. General Structure of the Mass: At Mass or the Lord s Supper the People of God is called together, with a Priest presiding and acting in the person of Christ, to celebrate the memorial of the Lord or Eucharistic Sacrifice. In an outstanding way there applies to such a local gathering of the holy Church the promise of Christ: Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in their midst (Mt 18:20). For in the celebration of Mass, in which the Sacrifice of the Cross is perpetuated, Christ is really present in the very assembly gathered in his name, in the person of the minister, in his word, and indeed substantially and uninterruptedly under the Eucharistic species. The Mass consists in some sense of two parts, namely the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist, these being so closely interconnected that they form but one single act of worship. For in the Mass is spread the table both of God s Word and of the Body of Christ, and from it the faithful are to be instructed and refreshed. There are also certain rites that open and conclude the celebration. (Next Week: Space permitting Introductory Rites) +
3 Page 3 Pray without ceasing-...i Thessalonians 5:17 Prayers of the Faithful, Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time To be added to the Parish s Warrior Prayer Chain evsdjsh@gmail.com Like the Canaanite woman, we now approach the Lord with persistent faith and ask Him to grant what we need. That the Church in every community may continue to be a house of prayer for all people. We pray to the Lord. For the priests serving in the Diocese of Sacramento, that their faith will never falter. We pray to the Lord. For all those in our Diocese discerning the call to the priesthood or consecrated life, that the Lord Jesus will give them every opportunity to strengthen their faith in His call. We pray to the Lord. That we may do more to welcome, cherish, and protect the gift of life which, like all God's gifts, is irrevocable. We pray to the Lord. That those who are vacationing may draw closer to the Lord and find refreshment in body and spirit. That the sick, the poor, and the lonely may find the consolation of God's presence and the love of His people. That those who have died may be purified of sin and rejoice in the eternal life of heaven. Each Sunday, a family, couple, or individual is called forward at Mass to receive the vocation cross and a special prayer written to accompany it. In taking the cross, they commit themselves to pray during the week for an increase in holy vocations, and the gift of our priests, sisters, brothers, and deacons. All are invited to participate. Please pray for all the Sacramento Diocese Priests. To see who has signed up and to those who have not signed up yet; please stop by and check out our SIGN - UP CORNER at the Narthex counter top. 10 RCIA-{Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults}: Pope Francis says Avanti! over and over again directing us to go forth! For Pope Francis the only image of the Church that is life-giving is a Church that goes forth, that goes out of itself, into the streets. In RCIA we work with people who have never been exposed to the love and mercy of Jesus Christ. We also help people who might have been baptized Catholic as a baby but for some reason never finished their sacraments of initiation (Confirmation and Eucharist). With others, that might have been Baptized in another Christian Church but are now interested in becoming Catholic. Whatever the source, we will bring them all into the full communion of the Church as we help them become citizens of Father Soane s 51st State, the State of Grace. To do this however we need your help to find these people. In Revelation, Jesus says that he is at the door and knocks. Most of us take it to mean that Jesus is outside wanting to come in. In his Pre-conclave address to the General Congregation meeting with the Cardinals, Pope Francis suggest another interpretation is that sometimes Jesus is knocking so we will let him out of the Church. With your help we can let Jesus out of the box. Our RCIA programs at Divine Mercy begins 10 September, so if you know someone or are that person, stop at our Table in the Narthex this weekend. AVANTI!
