2 Page 2 Sunday Connection Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, January 14, First Reading: Jonah 3:1-5,10 God spared the people of Nineveh because they heeded the message God sent through Jonah. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 25:4-5,6-7,8-9 The Lord teaches us his ways. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 Paul warns the Corinthians that they must act differently because the world in its present form is passing away. Gospel Reading: Mark 1:14-20 Jesus calls the fishermen, Simon and Andrew, James and John, to be his disciples. Background on the Gospel Reading: Today we begin a continuous reading of Mark s Gospel that will carry us through this segment of the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. Remember that in Cycle B of the Lectionary, most of the Gospel readings are taken from the Gospel according to Mark. The Gospel of Mark does not begin with a narrative about Jesus birth. Instead Mark begins by reporting on the preaching of John the Baptist. John is described as the voice in the wilderness sent to prepare the way of the Lord. Immediately after describing the work of John the Baptist, Mark reports on Jesus baptism and his temptation in the desert. Jesus public ministry begins after the arrest of John the Baptist. Mark wants his readers to understand the important connection between the end of the ministry of John the Baptist and the beginning of Jesus own ministry. As we learn at the beginning of today s Gospel reading, Jesus preaches the Kingdom of God in continuity with the preaching of John the Baptist. Like John the Baptist, Jesus pronouncement of the kingdom is a call to repentance. Yet Jesus preaching is greater than John s. Jesus begins the time of fulfillment; the Kingdom of God is already here. This will be demonstrated again and again, both in Jesus words and in the actions that follow. Jesus healings and forgiveness of sins are signs of the Kingdom of God that he announces in his teaching. In contrast to last week s Gospel, in Mark s Gospel Jesus takes the initiative in calling his first disciples. As mentioned last week, it was more typical of first-century rabbinical schools for students to seek out rabbis, asking to be their disciples. In Mark s Gospel, Jesus breaks with this tradition and invites his disciples to learn from him. Jesus is said to have first called four fishermen Simon, Andrew, James, and John. Simon and Andrew are brothers. Jesus promises that he will make them fishers of men. James and John are also brothers. Mark does not report Jesus' words of invitation to them, but he does report that they left their fishing immediately; their father, Zebedee, was left behind in the boat. Mark s Gospel is told with a great sense of urgency and immediacy. Jesus is a person of action, and events occur in rapid succession. We see this in today s Gospel. Time is of the essence; the fishermen immediately put aside their livelihood to become Jesus disciples. The Kingdom of God is here and now. The time of fulfillment is at hand. How might our lives be different if we more fully shared this sense of the immediacy of God s kingdom? + A Word From... The Beauty of the Mass: A Walk Through The Worship of God The Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist: Basic Questions and Answers Question #10: If someone without faith eats and drinks the consecrated bread and wine, does he or she still receive the Body and Blood of Christ? If "to receive" means "to consume," the answer is yes, for what the person consumes is the Body and Blood of Christ. If "to receive" means "to accept the Body and Blood of Christ knowingly and willingly as what they are, so as to obtain the spiritual benefit," then the answer is no. A lack of faith on the part of the person eating and drinking the Body and Blood of Christ cannot change what these are, but it does prevent the person from obtaining the spiritual benefit, which is communion with Christ. Such reception of Christ's Body and Blood would be in vain and, if done knowingly, would be sacrilegious (1 Cor 11:29). Reception of the Blessed Sacrament is not an automatic remedy. If we do not desire communion with Christ, God does not force this upon us. Rather, we must by faith accept God's offer of communion in Christ and in the Holy Spirit, and cooperate with God's grace in order to have our hearts and minds transformed and our faith and love of God increased. Question #11: If a believer who is conscious of having committed a mortal sin eats and drinks the consecrated bread and wine, does he or she still receive the Body and Blood of Christ? Yes. The attitude or disposition of the recipient cannot change what the consecrated bread and wine are. The question here is thus not primarily about the nature of the Real Presence, but about how sin affects the relationship between an individual and the Lord. Before one steps forward to receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion, one needs to be in a right relationship with the Lord and his Mystical Body, the Church - that is, in a state of grace, free of all mortal sin. While sin damages, and can even destroy, that relationship, the sacrament of Penance can restore it. St. Paul tells us that "whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord. A person should examine himself, and so eat the bread and drink the cup" (1 Cor 11:27-28). Anyone who is conscious of having committed a mortal sin should be reconciled through the sacrament of Penance before receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, unless a grave reason exists for doing so and there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, that is, an act of sorrow for sins that "arises from a love by which God is loved above all else" ( Catechism, no. 1452). The act of perfect contrition must be accompanied by the firm intention of making a sacramental confession as soon as possible. Question #12: Does one receive the whole Christ if one receives Holy Communion under a single form? Yes. Christ Jesus, our Lord and Savior, is wholly present under the appearance either of bread or of wine in the Eucharist. Furthermore, Christ is wholly present in any fragment of the consecrated Host or in any drop of the Precious Blood. Nevertheless, it is especially fitting to receive Christ in both forms during the celebration of the Eucharist. This allows the Eucharist to appear more perfectly as a banquet, a banquet that is a foretaste of the banquet that will be celebrated with Christ at the end of time when the Kingdom of God is established in its fullness (cf. Eucharisticum Mysterium, no. 32). +

That the Church and all those who are entrusted with teaching God s Word may be blessed with wisdom and courage. For the priests serving in the Diocese of Sacramento, that they will never fail to call their flock to repentance and belief in the gospel. For all those called to the priesthood or consecrated life in the Diocese of Sacramento that they will follow Jesus as the first disciples did. For all of those involved in the Men's Welcome Retreat this weekend, that they will experience a great outpouring of God's love and mercy in their lives. That the leaders of the world who have the task of governing may carry out their duties with justice and maintain peace among nations. That nations may repent of the sins of abortion, euthanasia, and neglect of the poor and weak, and may reform their laws to protect every human life. For all those who suffer in body, mind or spirit that they may be cared for with gentleness and patience. That those who have died may enjoy the peace of God s kingdom, and that those who grieve for them may be comforted.
