2 Page 2 A Word From... Sunday Connections March 11, 2018 The Fourth Sunday of Lent Jesus is the light that has come into the world reflection offered within the narrative. The words of the Evangelist are in continuity with the words of the prologue to John s Gospel. In these reflections, John elaborates on a number of themes that are found in his Gospel: light and darkness, belief and unbelief, good and evil, salvation and condemnation. In John s reflection, we find an observation about human sinfulness. Jesus is the light that has come into the world, but people preferred the darkness. We wish to keep our sins hidden, even from God. Jesus has come into the world to reveal our sins so that they may be forgiven. This is the Good News; it is the reason for our rejoicing in this season of Lent and throughout our lives. + First Reading: 2 Chronicles 36:14-16,19-23 The causes for the Israelites captivity in Babylon are described. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 137:1-2,3,4-5,6 A lament from exile for the loss of Jerusalem Second Reading: Ephesians 2:4-10 In grace we have been saved, so that we may do the work of the Lord. Gospel Reading: John 3:14-21 Jesus tells Nicodemus that the Son of Man will be raised up so that those who believe in him will have eternal life. Background on the Gospel Reading: The fourth Sunday of Lent is sometimes called Laetare Sunday. Laetare is a Latin word that means rejoice. Traditionally, Sundays are named after the first word of the liturgy s opening antiphon. On this Sunday, the antiphon is taken from the book of the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 66:10-11). Even as we observe our Lenten sacrifices, we rejoice in anticipation of the joy that will be ours at Easter. Today s Gospel reading is taken from John s Gospel. It consists of two parts. The first part is the final sentence of Jesus reply to Nicodemus, the Pharisee who approached Jesus at night. Nicodemus acknowledged Jesus as someone who had come from God and seemed to want to be a follower of Jesus. Jesus greeted Nicodemus with the observation that one must be born from above to see the Kingdom of God. The dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus that followed was about the meaning of this phrase. Nicodemus misunderstood Jesus at every point, but there was no animosity in the questions he posed to Jesus. In the part of the conversation with Nicodemus in today s Gospel, Jesus referred to an incident reported in the Old Testament. When the Israelites grumbled against the Lord during their sojourn in the desert, God sent venomous serpents to punish them for their complaints. The Israelites repented and asked Moses to pray for them. The Lord heard Moses prayer and instructed him to make a bronze serpent and mount it on a pole. All who had been bitten by a serpent and then looked upon the bronze serpent were cured. By recalling this story, Jesus alludes to the salvation that would be accomplished through his death and Resurrection. The second part of today s Gospel is a theological reflection on Jesus words to Nicodemus. The Gospel of John is known for this kind of stewardship A Total Stewardship Parish is ALIVE! It is a prayerful, welcoming, Eucharist-centered community with a common vision: God is the source of all. Its members are committed to furthering the Word and work of Christ by caring for each other and all of God s creation. In gratitude, they joyfully give back a portion of their God-given gifts of TIME, TALENT and TREASURE. US Bishops, 1992 Pastoral Letter More from the USCCB on Stewardship: Disciples as Stewards Let us begin with being a disciple a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ. As members of the Church, Jesus calls us to be disciples. This has astonishing implications: Mature disciples make a conscious decision to follow Jesus, no matter what the cost. Christian disciples experience conversion life shaping changes of mind and heart and commit their very selves to the Lord. Christian stewards respond in a particular way to the call to be a disciple. Stewardship has the power to shape and mold our understanding of our lives and the way in which we live. Jesus' disciples and Christian stewards recognize God as the origin of life, giver of freedom, and source of all things. We are grateful for the gifts we have received and are eager to use them to show our love for God and for one another. We look to the life and teaching of Jesus for guidance in living as Christian stewards. + Next week: Stewards of Creation During Lent, Confession is available during the week starting 30 minutes before Mass. You can also make an appointment for your Confession with the office, just call Saturdays Confessions are heard 3:45-4:45.

That the Church will lead us on our Lenten journey with hearts and minds renewed, so we may enter more fully into the mysteries of our redemption. That the priests of the Diocese of Sacramento will be given the grace to call us out of darkness into the light of Christ this Lenten Season. For all those called to the priesthood or consecrated life in the Diocese of Sacramento, that they will know that their calling is purely a gift of God and respond accordingly. For all parishioners who make a sacrificial, proportionate, and generous gift of their time, talent, and treasure, that their offering will be always an act of love. That national and world leaders will have the wisdom to discern what is best for their people. That God, who sent His Son to save and not to condemn, will touch the hearts of all who have had abortions, and bring them the gift of repentance, forgiveness, and healing. That that sick may be healed and that those who have died may be granted a home in heaven. Remembering the Sick in Prayer Father God, we lift up all those who are facing illness today. We ask that you would bring healing, comfort and peace to their bodies. Calm their fears and let them experience the healing power of Your love. In Jesus name. Amen Each Sunday, a family, couple, or individual is called forward at Mass to receive the vocation cross and a special prayer written to accompany it. In taking the cross, they commit themselves to pray during the week for an increase in holy vocations, and the gift of our priests, sisters, brothers, and deacons. All are invited to participate. Please pray for all of the Sacramento Diocese Priests. To see who has signed up and to those who have not signed up yet; please stop by and check out our SIGN - UP CORNER at the Narthex counter top. Please take the Vocation Cross home with you. We need families to accept this prayer mission at all Masses Saturday Vigil, Sunday 7:30, 9:30 and 12:30 Masses Is God inviting you to Pray for the Vocations? 8 DIVINE MERCY CATHOLIC CHURCH CUP-OF-SACRIFICE LENTEN COMMUNCAL PROJECT NEEDS YOUR HELP! Did you hear? This year s Cup-Of-Sacrifice project, which will allow us to make repairs to the buildings, and Rectory has only collected THE CRITICAL NEED IS SHORT 26,119. Oh my! What can I, my friends and my family do to help? If everyone would donate 20 per week for each week of Lent, we could come really close to meeting the critical need for the repairs. Less than 200 families have been contributing toward the maintenance of our Parish Home, but we have on average 1500 families that use it each week. Spread the word.everyone should help! This Lenten season, we see the rare occurrence of Jesus' anger in our Gospel readings; He is angry at how the people have defiled His Father's house (John 2:13-25). In light of this reading, we as stewards should consider our own use of the church buildings and resources. Are we failing to do all we can do for our church? What will our lack of response to this critical need result in? Failure to pay our bills? Failure to shore up our infrastructure? This Lenten Season is the critical time for us to step up and make a perfect home for ourselves and our Lord. Please give!
