2 Page 2 A Word From... LPI Connect: Gifts on God s Terms Reflection for Sunday October 15, 2017 Matthew 22: Wedding registries. Christmas lists. Return policies. Gift cards. No one can deny that these modern conveniences make our lives easier. What do they all have in common? Personal preference. In each of these things, we have a say over the gift we receive. It s something to which we ve become accustomed. But does God work that way? This Sunday s readings can seem incongruous, even jarringly so. The first and second readings are optimistic, hopeful, and filled with confidence in God s bounty. Isaiah in the first reading speaks of rich food and choice wines, death destroyed, and sorrow wiped away forever. Then comes the famous Psalm 23, where having the Lord as our shepherd means we shall not want. Finally, the second reading gives an assurance that, as God provided for St. Paul s needs, so too will God provide for the Philippians, and for us. And then we come to the Gospel. The parable of the wedding feast is filled with things that ought to make us uncomfortable. A fabulous banquet invitation refused for no evident reason. The brutal murder of the king s servants and the king s retributive punishment. And while things seem to improve at a come one, come all style banquet, the parable still ends with a party-goer cast out for improper attire. How do we reconcile this intensity with the preceding readings? In an era of online grocery delivery and the growing internet of things, it s becoming increasingly easy to expect to experience life on our terms. God, however, doesn t seem to operate that way. In the Gospel, the king holds out an invitation, only to have it repeatedly rejected. Is the gift so unimportant? We should hesitate to judge those in the parable too harshly modern church attendance numbers tell a similar story. When the invitation is accepted, Jesus highlights not the grateful guests, but the under-dressed. Why? He took the gift of the king, but he didn t truly receive it. His casual, offhand manner at the wedding conveys that he didn t really understand the importance of the invitation in the first place. This parable raises important questions. Is it that difficult to humble ourselves? Is it that difficult to receive a gift on God s terms rather than our own? The abundant gifts God offers can make people uncomfortable. Sanctifying grace? That comes through weekly reception of the sacraments. Abundant life in heaven? That requires an adherence of our hearts to the challenging ethos of the Gospel. In Paul s acceptance of God s providence, he clearly states that he has lived in both humble circumstances and abundance, that he has been well-fed and gone hungry. For him, the gift of God wasn t the ongoing fulfillment of wants, but perfect fulfillment of needs. This attitude requires humility the ability to recognize the potential of providence in every situation, even if the gift doesn t perfectly match our preferences. As we prepare our hearts and minds for next Sunday s liturgy, let s allow the Scripture to challenge our perception. God s abundance is waiting for us, but it might not look like we think it will. Let s pray for the inner transformation we need so that, when the invitation comes, we ll find ourselves ready to embrace it. + The Beauty of the Mass: A Walk Through The Worship of God. The Lector at Mass-Scripture Readings and Liturgy of the Word continued : After each reading, whoever reads it pronounces the acclamation, and by means of the reply the assembled people give honor to the Word of God that they have received in faith and with gratitude. (GIRM, nos ) The lector is instituted to proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture, with the exception of the Gospel. He may also announce the intentions for the Universal Prayer and, in the absence of a psalmist, recite the Psalm between the readings. In the celebration of the Eucharist, the lector has his own proper function (cf. nos ), which he himself must carry out. (GIRM, no. 99) In the absence of an instituted lector, other lay people may be deputed to proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture, people who are truly suited to carrying out this function and carefully prepared, so that by their hearing the readings from the sacred texts the faithful may conceive in their hearts a sweet and living affection for Sacred Scripture. (GIRM, no. 101) The Liturgy of the Word: After the Collect, all sit. The Priest may, very briefly, introduce the faithful to the Liturgy of the Word. Then the reader goes to the ambo and, from the Lectionary already placed there before Mass, proclaims the First Reading, to which all listen. At the end, the reader pronounces the acclamation The word of the Lord, and all reply, Thanks be to God. Then a few moments of silence may be observed, if appropriate, so that all may meditate on what they have heard. Then the psalmist or the reader proclaims the verses of the Psalm and the people make the response as usual. If there is to be a Second Reading before the Gospel, the reader proclaims it from the ambo. All listen and at the end reply to the acclamation, as noted above (no. 128). Then, if appropriate, a few moments of silence may be observed. (GIRM, nos ) Functions of the Lector ;The Introductory Rites: In the procession to the altar, in the absence of a Deacon, the reader, wearing approved attire [see GIRM, no. 339], may carry the Book of the Gospels, slightly elevated. In that case, the reader walks in front of the Priest but otherwise walks along with the other ministers. Upon reaching the altar, the reader makes a profound bow with the others [see also GIRM, no. 274]. If he is carrying the Book of the Gospels, he approaches the altar and places the Book of the Gospels upon it. Then the reader takes his own place in the sanctuary with the other ministers. (GIRM, nos ) The Liturgy of the Word: The reader reads from the ambo the readings that precede the Gospel. In the absence of a psalmist, the reader may also proclaim the Responsorial Psalm after the First Reading. In the absence of a Deacon, the reader, after the introduction by the Priest, may announce the intentions of the Universal Prayer from the ambo. If there is no singing at the Entrance or at Communion and the antiphons given in the Missal are not recited by the faithful, the reader may read them at an appropriate time (cf. nos. 48, 87). (GIRM, nos ) The Concluding Rites: At the conclusion of the Mass, the lector does not process with the Book of the Gospels. The Lectionary is never carried in procession. The lector may join in the procession at the end of Mass in the same order as in the procession to the altar. +

3 Page 3 Pray without ceasing-...i Thessalonians 5:17 Compassionate Lord, we pray for those who have been devastated by recent natural disasters. We remember those who have lost their lives so suddenly. We hold in our hearts the families forever changed by grief and loss. Bring them consolation and comfort. Surround them with our prayers for strength. Bless those who have survived and heal their memories of trauma and devastation. May they have the courage to face the long road of rebuilding ahead. We ask your blessing on all those who have lost their homes, their livelihoods, their security and their hope. Bless the work of relief agencies and those providing emergency assistance. May their work be guided by the grace and strength that comes from You alone. Help us to respond with generosity in prayer, in assistance, in aid to the best of our abilities. Keep our hearts focused on the needs of those affected, even after the crisis is over. We ask this in Jesus' name, Amen Prayer for California Fire Relief Each Sunday, a family, couple, or individual is called forward at Mass to receive the vocation cross and a special prayer written to accompany it. In taking the cross, they commit themselves to pray during the week for an increase in holy vocations, and the gift of our priests, sisters, brothers, and deacons. All are invited to participate. Please pray for all the Sacramento Diocese Priests. To see who has signed up and to those who have not signed up yet; please stop by and check out our SIGN - UP CORNER at the Narthex counter top. Let us offer our prayers for all those in need of God s abiding presence. That all Church leaders will minister to the people of God in generosity and self-sacrifice. That the Good Shepherd will refresh the souls of each of the priests serving in the Diocese of Sacramento. For all of those called to the priesthood or consecrated life in the Diocese of Sacramento, that God will supply all that they need to enable them to answer His call. That those affected by the California fires may experience the presence of Christ though the charity and goodness of those who seek to alleviate the devastation in their lives. That governments of the world will recognize that their power comes from God and "that they" may exercise their duties according to His law. For those in our community who are lonely, sick, and suffering, may God shower them with his love and compassion. For the members of our parish and our families who have died. Remembering the Sick in Prayer Paul Paguirigan Jesus, You suffered and died for us. You understand suffering. Teach me to understand my suffering as You do; to bear it in union with You; to offer it with You to atone for my sins and to bring your grace to souls in need. Calm my fears; increase my trust. May I gladly accept your holy will and become more like You in trial. If it be your will, restore me to health so that I may work for your honor and glory and the salvation of all.
