1 Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Circuit Rider November 2016 Brothers and sisters, Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As I sit down to write this article, my head and my heart are hurting. I just watched the third and final presidential debate of this 2016 election season. To say that I am anxious about the future of our country is an understatement. Our country, the United States, is painfully divided. Our denomination, the United Methodist Church, is painfully divided. Over the course of this year, we have seen protests and disruptions at General Conference, the call for a special General Conference, the open defiance of several progressive Annual Conferences, and the organization of the Wesleyan Covenant Association which appears to be laying the groundwork for a new denomination and an exodus of conservatives. When the world needs us to set the example, we are just as divided and contentious as our secular observers. Many of us are feeling a profound sense of loss right now and the season of Thanksgiving is approaching. Maybe that s Providence at work. The annual celebration of the harvest, and the family thanksgiving rituals that go along with it, will force us to count our blessings. And I suggest that we do that very literally. 2 Page 2 Circuit Rider November 2016 Continued from page 1 Brothers and sisters, I am thankful for many things: My family, even though they drive me nuts. My church family, even though I can t remember everybody s name. My nation, even though it s a mess. My denomination, even though it s a holy mess. All of these things have loved me, nurtured me, and supported me And they deserve my loving support now. Our nation needs us. Our church needs us. The world needs us. In these days of anger, fear, and grief, it s more important than ever that we act in a spirit of faith, hope, and love. Whatever happens on November 8 is less important than what we do on November 9. I close with the words of G.K. Chesterton: O God of earth and altar, bow down and hear our cry, our earthly rulers falter, our people drift and die; the walls of gold entomb us, the swords of scorn divide, take not thy thunder from us, but take away our pride. From all that terror teaches, from lies of tongue and pen, from all the easy speeches that comfort cruel men, from sale and profanation of honor, and the sword, from sleep and from damnation, deliver us, good Lord! Your brother and pastor, Steve Humphrey United Methodist Women Sarah Circle Our meeting opened in prayer and we were reminded how fortunate we are to be able to gather in friendship and love for each other. We spent some time going over the plans for our Bazaar which will be November 12 from 9am-2pm. There will be 35 crafters there to choose from. This makes for a good variety of items to choose from. Don t forget our special homemade soups to enjoy as you take a break from shopping. The bake table will be loaded with many homemade goodies to enjoy. A special part of our meeting was set aside for Pastor Steve to meet some of our ladies. He also spent time asking about our likes and dislikes in our s ervices. He listened and answered all of our questions. We served a potluck luncheon which everyone enjoyed. Our next meeting is on November 15 at 11am in the blue room when we will distribute all of the profits from the Bazaar. This is our special charity for the year. Bring a bag lunch and join us in this very special time. In God s Love, Marion Houser, President

Everyone is encouraged to participate in this Outreach program to benefit children who have been orphaned, abused, or abandoned in the Baltimore, Washington, West Virginia, and So Maryland areas. Fill the stockings with $5.00 in quarters Children of all ages love to put coins in the slots! or simply place cash or check (made payable to Mt. Zion UMC, memo: Board of Child Care) inside the stocking. Place Stockings in the offering plate or give to your Sunday School Leader by December 20th. Thanks in advance for helping with this valuable Outreach program! Stockings will also be available in the narthex in the sanctuary. In Everything Give Thanks Kids Korner CHILDREN S SUNDAY SCHOOL OFFERING COINS FOR CARING WISHING WELL Being generous with our Blessings is an important part of our faith journey and our children are encouraged to start thinking about how their money ( coins ) can help others. There is no amount too small when given by a child. This simple act teaches them to give to others just as Jesus would like us to do. All of the Coins for Caring in November will go to help the Food Pantry here at Mt. Zion. At the end of the month, we will show the children how much they collected and the food pantry, so they can make the connection of how their Coins really help those in need. Thank you for your support. God s Blessings to all. ~Give Thanks for a little and you will find a lot. Advent is an exciting time! It s a season of preparation for Christmas. The church is counting down to the day when we remember Jesus birth. And like any important event we have lots of preparations during the 4 weeks before Christmas. At Sunday school we prepare for Jesus birth by sharing in lots of ways, through stories, songs, and crafts. In Sunday school the children will be given Advent calendars and also an Advent Countdown chain with activities that will help remind us to prepare out hearts for the birth of Jesus. This is a fun activity that can involve the whole family. If for some reason your child is not at SS the day we give out the Advent Calendars and Countdown, please ask their teacher and will make sure they receive one! We wouldn't want anyone to miss out : )

7 Page 7 Circuit Rider November 2016 Thanksgiving Eve Ecumenical Services Once again the churches which support the Hungry Team will gather Thanksgiving Eve for wor-ship and fellowship. Mark your calendars for this annual opportunity to worship with our neighbors and to remember those who need a helping hand. Why: To worship and serve Bring non-perishable food and an offering to benefit the people served by the Hungry Team. Our Annual Trick or Treating for the Hungry Team took place on October 23rd. WOW! A round of applause & Thank You to Sarah Littleton and Dusty and Jen Brill for organizing this outreach mission, to our Youth Groups for hosting the party as a thank you to the tricker treaters for all their hard work and to Tim and Cindy Bowling, our Hungry Team Coordinators, for the pizza and treats. Everyone working together made this a success! Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God which he has given you. Deuteronomy 16:17 Sarah, Tim, Dusty, Jen and Cindy WISHING YOU & YOUR FAMILY A PEACEFUL THANKSGIVING Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, Giving thanks through Him to God the father Colossians 3:17

8 Page 8 Circuit Rider November 2016 Stay tuned for Thanksgiving and Advent A HUGE THANK YOU to those on the Worship Arts Committee: Lucy Crabtree, Lucy Prince, Pat Steiber (and Dick for making the banner poles), Bill and Judy Cox, Nancy Cardinale, Jennifer Johnson, Destiny Crooks and Betty Finamore. I hope I haven t forgotten anyone, please forgive if I have. Please keep in mind, we are still looking for talent and skills of all kinds. It is so much fun working with a group of talented, creative overachievers!!!!!!! As many of you can see, the sanctuary is decorated for fall. More things will be added as Thanksgiving approaches. A reminder that we do have three decorative crates for the purpose of collecting canned goods, box dinners and breakfast foods. Thanksgiving and Christmas are the busiest and most neediest time of the year for our Hungry Team. Please consider sharing your blessings with those less fortunate. Pastor Steve proposed an idea of a more interactive children s service for Christmas Eve. It will mean getting the Sunday school classes involved and offering the same opportunity to our preschool students. Pastor Steve met with several people involved in Sunday school and VBS to see if there was any interest in this new innovative idea for a children s service. All seem to be excited about making this happen. Mark your calendar for the Hanging of the Greens on Saturday, November 26. We will start at 9:30 with coffee, juice and donuts. Fellowship with a filled donut does wonders! Then we will divide into teams to decorate the sanctuary and the fellowship hall. Young and old and everyone in between is invited to help. We especially need people that can climb ladders not everything we do is at eye level. The more people that help, the faster this will get done. Last year, the decorating almost didn t happen THE WORSHIP COMMITTEE. because very few came out to help. A phone call for an emergency sent by Ide Hill rallied the troops! Please consider helping make Mt. Zion an even more welcoming, warmer and friendly place to be during the upcoming holidays. Joan Ritchie Worship Committee, Chairperson With Loving Thanks Church Family and Friends I don t know the exact words to say Thank you so you will know how much kindness, joy and happiness I felt on the morning of September 11 for the surprise fellowship you did for me. I can t believe you got one over on me. (I thought I never missed anything, but I guess I was wrong.) It was a total surprise (can t believe my family didn t let it slip). I just hope I was just half as nice as all the cards seemed say. I ve always tried to be that kind of person. I want to thank each of you for your friendship over all the years we have been at Mt. Zion. Special thanks to Joan Ritchie, Trish Herriman, Ford Dean and Bryan Smith and the Chancel Choir. Thank you for the love offering. I didn t expect such a gift, but it is very much appreciated from the bottom of my heart. My life has been centered around music, family and friends and I love everyone of you. May God Bless each of you and Thank you again, Pat Ramey

9 Page 9 Circuit Rider November 2016 Music Ministry Update Come one, come all! Save the date! Mark your calendar! Saturday December 17th at 4:00pm, the Music Ministry will be hosting the Christmas Prism event in fellowship hall. A prism is a transparent optical element with flat, polished surfaces that refract light. When pure white light shines through a prism, many beautiful colors come out. God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is the pure white light shining into each and every one of us. Each of us is a distinct and beautiful color that is meant to put Christian Love in action here on Earth. We will be exhibiting all the many beautiful colors of our church through this annual event. The Handbell Choir, Children s Choir, Tone Chimes, Drama team, chamber groups, and of course the Chancel Choir s cantata Go Sing It on The Mountain by Pepper Choplin will make up the afternoon event. Admission is free. If you are interested in singing in just the cantata, we have a few more books, come on Wednesday at 7pm. Looking for an activity with wholesome Christian values? Our Children s Choir meets Wednesdays at 5:30pm for 30 minutes. The group is an easy way to get your child active in a church group that is fun and filled with God s love. Believe it or not, Chancel Choir is not as much a weekly time commitment as you might believe. We practice for 1 hour a week on Wednesday evenings at 7pm, and sing on Sundays. Many choir members sing at only one service. Quite often choir members will go sit with their families following the anthem. If you, or you know someone who is looking for something to make Wednesdays more exciting and likes to sing, come to Chancel Choir. All are welcome, no audition required! Bryan Smith, Director of Music

11 Page 11 Circuit Rider November 2016 Welcome Fall! For the Preschool, Fall means fun! We had a wonderful time on our field trip to Serenity Farm in Benedict. The children enjoyed the petting zoo, hayride, maze and pumpkin patch. October 21 st was our Halloween Movie Night. Children and their families were invited to dress-up and join us for treats and a special viewing of Spookly the Square Pumpkin. The kids looked great and we all had a blast. In November, we will be visiting the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department. The children will each bring a chaperone and will be able to tour the fire house, and learn fire safety with the fire fighters. The children will put on their first Chapel performance for their families on November 22 nd, followed by a Pot Luck Fellowship. Our Community Service Project for November will be collecting nonperishable food items for the Hungry Team Food Pantry. We look forward to supporting the outreach ministries of Mt. Zion UMC and feel that this is an opportunity to teach our children the importance of helping their community. Christmas is coming! If you are looking for something educational that supports the Mt. Zion UMC Preschool, stop by during school hours December th and check out our Scholastic Book Fair. We always have interesting books and unique items for stocking stuffers. Thank you to our families and supporters. God has given us an amazing support system through you and we are so grateful.

12 Page 12 Circuit Rider November 2016 UNITED METHODIST MEN All men are invited to join us every second Saturday of the month. Our next UMM meeting will be Saturday, November 12, 7:30am, Fellowship Hall. Eddie Prince UMM President "I believe in the Bible. I believe that all good things come from God. I don't believe I'd sing the way I do if God hadn't wanted me to". I will explain later. YOU ARE A BLESSING. The United Methodist Men always worry when we have an event, will we have enough of this, will we have enough of that, will we, will we...your generosity, helping hands and willing hearts did not go unnoticed. You did not hesitate to lend a helping hand Friday evening in the preparation of the Chicken BBQ. Many returned early Saturday morning, jumped right in, stayed all day and some came later to help clean up. We can not express our appreciation enough. It was a joy to see so many young people involved in the Fall Festival, Girl Scouts with their baked goods and Boy Scouts delivering ordered dinners to our guests. We welcomed many first time visitors who dined in the fellowship hall. We shared conversation and welcomed them to Mt. Zion. I am having a hard time putting our gratitude into words to Frank Hill who headed up the Chicken BBQ for many years. Frank has turned over the helm to Ken Cardinale who stepped forward when Frank announced it was time for him to retire. Ohhhh I did notice Frank relaxing out front under the canopy enjoying the beautiful weather, chatting with our guests, enjoying his day in the sun with that big smile on his face. Thank you Frank for your years of caring and Ken for stepping up to carry the torch. Another successful Chicken BBQ because of you Mt. Zion and the Community. Did you miss the Youth Lip Sync? Ohhhh you missed an entertaining evening. My goodness I am lost for words, now that is a first. The youth did a FANTASTIC job as well as the adults that took the stage. A lot of thought went into the costumes, the acts, the overall evening. As leaving you could hear and feel the excitement in the air for next year. Can't wait. The UMM Annual Winter Dinner will be Saturday, December 10. Catering by Zee Best Cafe with Baked Ham, Braised Chicken with herb gravy, Green Beans, Parsley Potatoes, Tossed Garden Salad, Rolls and Butter, Coffee, Tea and Dessert, $20 pp. Entertainment will be provided by Jim Godbold - Elvis impersonator from Calvert County. Jim has performed at functions such as weddings, birthday parties, Relay for Life, County Fairs, Optimist, just to mention a few. Now you know the above quote was from Elvis, one of many he is known for. I hope you will join us on December 10th for an evening of special presentations, a delicious meal and fun entertainment. I leave you with this- "The world is more alive at night...it's like God ain't looking." Another Elvis quote. ELVIS HAS LEFT THE BUILDING George Hill VP UMM

13 Page 13 Circuit Rider November 2016 U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T W O M E N Circle of Friends invite you to join our group in Fellowship and help us with the many Missions we do for our church! Our next meeting will be November 12, 7:30am in the blue room. Any questions, please call me anytime. Thank you and Blessings to all, Carolyn Ayers, President The United Methodist Women's Circle of Friends held their monthly meeting on Saturday, October 8th at 7:30am in the blue room of the Family Life Center. There were 9 members in attendance. The meeting opened with a devotion titled Become a World- Changing Woman, followed by the Lord's Prayer. We shared our joys and concerns, enjoyed a light breakfast and got down to business. During the October 9th 8:30service, we presented our ASP Mission team a check in the amount of $375 and to Mt. Zion a check in the amount of $180 for our International Ministry. October 15th some of our ladies helped with the UMM Chicken BBQ. I think it is wonderful that the different groups within our church support each other. On October 18th was our monthly sing-a-long at the Charlotte Hall Veteran's Home. We are at the CHVH every third Tuesday of each month. Anyone is welcome to join us for this time of fellowship and fun with our Veterans. In November, we will donate cash to the Hungry Team to help with their Thanksgiving baskets and we will donate to World Vision enough to purchase a goat, a sheep, four chickens, five ducks and buying a share in the cost of a well. Our ladies will be serving drinks at the Dinner Theater on the 4th and 5th, and we will have a table at the craft fair on the 12th selling our tote bags and prayer cubes (Christmas gifts?). We will soon begin collecting our gallon jugs for use at the Christmas Eve services after Thanksgiving, so keep us in mind. We have set the dates for our Stone Soup Sundays, January 22nd and February 19th after the 11:00 service. Our turn-out last year was wonderful, and we hope you will join us for great fellowship and delicious soups. More information will be coming in the future. Of course we will continue to provide muffins for the Sunday morning fellowship. We appreciate the generosity of our congregation in the support of our fundraisers. Without your help we wouldn't be able to aid others in need. Next September 16th, 2017 the COF will be hosting a seminar on Human Trafficking from 1:00-4:00 in our Fellowship Hall. There will be speakers from some of our area police officers and others who are familiar with this problem. Some of us attended a seminar a few years ago and found it informative and unsettling. We will be providing lunch and anyone can attend. More information will follow as the date grows near. We keep pretty busy but we enjoy using our time and talents to serve the Lord. Come join us. May the Lord bless you and keep you; may He make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you, may He lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26 God's blessings, Carolyn Ayers COF President

A time of shaking off what was before. It is evident that the natural pulse of the earth mirrors our lives and our journeys. We can learn much by opening up our eyes and hearts to the little, hidden treasures all around us. As we see the leaves changing colors and falling to the earth, let s remember that this is a season for the OLD to wither away and freefall. There is great beauty in these changes! As we ponder our own pasts and look ahead with hope of new growth and rebirth, the parallels are countless! Jillian Short
