Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Circuit Rider July 2018 Brothers and sisters, Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! I hope that everyone is enjoying their summer and spending time with family and friends. My family will be taking an epic Orlando vacation in August, seeing both Disney and Universal. It will be a much-needed break for me, and I hope the rest of our congregation s leadership will take time to recharge as well. You see, we have all been quite busy. As I discussed in my sermon on June 10 (catch the podcast if you haven t heard it yet), the United Methodist Church is at a crossroads. We are the last remaining big tent protestant denomination in the world, embracing a wide variety of theological positions. Every other major protestant church suffered a schism between liberals and conservatives in the 20 th Century. Thus far, the UMC has managed to keep both viewpoints together in one church. This is because, since the days of John Wesley, we have always been invested in both evangelism and social justice. Unfortunately, as we have become a global church, our structure has been strained to the breaking point, and we can no longer reach consensus on major issues. The most recent impasse has been over whether or not to offer full-inclusion to the LGBT community, offering same-sex weddings and ordaining pastors who are married Continued on pg. 2 Mark Your Calendar July 1-7 ASP Mission Trip July 9-13 Vacation Bible School July 20 Movie Night Wrinkle in Time July Music Camps 12pm Children 6pm Youth/Adults July 28 UMM Live Auction Aug 31-Sept 1 Hungry Team Yard Sale Sept 8 UMM Car Show It s Not to Late to Register for Vacation Bible School Monday-Friday; July 9-13 Registration forms available on-line or in the church office. For more information contact our event Chairperson, Nardine Daniels at or Tim Bowling at Donations can be brought to the church beginning Sunday, August 26 th. All proceeds help to buy groceries to stock the food pantry, and also help to offset the cost of specific utility bills for those in need. Food for the Pantry: A very special thank you goes out this month to St. Mary s County Government Department of Aging. They recently did a food drive, and we were one of three recipients to receive the food to help stock our food pantry. Beginning August 3rd, the Food Pantry will NOT BE OPEN ON TUESDAYS, but rather we will be open on Fridays from 8-11am. Hungry Team Annual Silent Auction: November 2 nd and 3 rd. Look for more information to come! The Hungry Team and the people who benefit from your generous donations thank each and every one of you so very much for your continued support. Whether it is through donations of canned food or monetary donations to support our pantry, donations for our yard sale or silent auction, or donation of your time and energy, we couldn t do what we do without you. Blessings, Cindy Bowling, Hungry Team Coordinator Continued from pg. 1 Brothers and Sisters, to same-sex spouses. The majority of American Methodists are in favor of progressive change, but the majority of Methodists globally favor moving the church in a more conservative direction. However, this is just the most recent in a long series of disagreements. In previous disagreements, after much argumentation and too little prayer, we have always (eventually) reached compromises. On this topic, we have been unable to do so. As a result, the UMC will be holding a specially-called global General Conference in February of If this General Conference is able to reach a consensus, it will result in major changes in how the UMC operates. If it does not reach consensus, there will likely be a schism resulting in the creation of at least one new denomination possibly two. This schism would not be an orderly schism; but would take place through a series of lawsuits in secular courts a chaotic outcome that should be avoided if possible. As your pastor, it is my responsibility to prepare the body for these events as best I can. I am quite certain that this topic (LGBT inclusion) will impact your life at some point in the future regardless of the actions of the UMC. Continued on pg. 3

Page 3 Circuit Rider July 2018 Continued from pg. 2 Brothers and Sisters, This summer, I have been leading an intense book study for church leaders. Church Council members, staff members, trustees, and SPRC members have been participating. This study has covered three main topics: 1. The global structure of the UMC, the current debate, and the Bishops Commission on a Way Forward. 1. An overview of how the (universal) Church has attempted to apply Old Testament Law to gentile life since the days of the Apostles. My sermon on June 10 related directly to this topic. A chapter-per-week discussion of The Bible, Gender, and Sexuality Reframing the Church s Debate on Same-Sex Relationships by James V. Brownson. This book is an academic defense of full LGBT inclusion. It is written from an evangelical perspective and has a high doctrine of scriptural authority. This has been a challenging class, and your leaders should be commended for devoting so much of their summer to it. My goal in this ongoing study is not to change anyone s minds on this topic. Rather, my goal is to reshape the conversation. This conversation can no longer be framed as a debate between People who don t believe the Bible vs. People who don t believe in basic human rights. It must be framed as a debate over scriptural interpretation and holiness a value that is claimed by both sides. Our congregation is as divided on this topic as the denomination is, and it is imperative that we treat each other with dignity and respect especially as the global church makes decisions that will affect all of us. In the fall, I will make myself available to teach another class aimed at a broader audience. If there is interest, the class will probably make use of a book that is easier to read than Brownson. I ask that you keep our denominational leaders, Bishop Easterling, and our congregation in your prayers. I believe it would be a tragic loss to the global witness of Christianity if the UMC is unable to preserve a diversity of opinion within a single denomination. The entire world is becoming polarized, and people of different ideologies no longer see the value of dialogue and cooperation. I believe the UMC has a vital witness of Christian unity and cooperation that can and must transcend our differences on divisive issues. I intend to strive for as much unity as possible, and I pray that you all do the same. Your brother and pastor, Stephen W. Humphrey, Jr. P.S. For more information, please visit This is a grass-roots movement, of which I am a member, to modify to the UMC in such a way that progressives and conservatives can both follow their consciences while remaining in the United Methodist Church. 7 Page 7 Circuit Rider July 2018 Welcome to our newest Staff Members Hello My name is Arielle Crooks and I have recently joined the Mt. Zion Church staff as the Director of Children s Ministry. I am extremely excited to provide leadership to our Sunday school volunteers and help our children grow a lasting relationship to God our Father. Myself and my family have been members of our church for 6 years. In that time I have served in Sunday school, nursery and leading the Kids for Christ ministry. If needed, I may be contacted through my Mtzion.Childrensministry@gmail.com or my cell phone: My name is Susan Matlock and I have joined Mt. Zion as the Sunday morning Nursery Care Provider, along with Amy Howell. I have replaced Arielle, who is now our Director of Children s Ministry. I was born and raised in St. Mary s County and grew up pretty much in the church s backyard. I married my husband, Donny, in 2000 and we have 7 children, Samantha (17), Alyssa (15), Bryanna (14), Rebecca (9), Jessica (7), Gunnar (5) and Jack (3). I have been an active part of the church since I taught Sunday school for four years and co-led Kids For Christ for the past year. Hi! My name is Hannah Gross and I'm pleased to be the Interim Music Director for the summer. I've been here at Mt. Zion my entire life and will be attending University of Maryland College Park in the fall. I have been playing piano for 9 years, and have been singing since I was 4 (starting in children's choir here!). I've had the wonderful experience of performing in multiple All State Choirs--and even an All Eastern Choir--with world-renowned directors, and it has been my joy to have been Senior Student Section Leader of the Chopticon Peace Pipers this past year. I'm excited to be starting two Summer Music Camps and working with people of all ages in my church family to make beautiful music. If you have questions or want to volunteer to do a Sunday of special music (please!!), don t hesitate to contact me. (240) ; hannahbelle144@gmail.com.

Page 9 Circuit Rider July 2018 Continued from pg. 8 An Unspoken Bible His name is Bill. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college. He is brilliant. Kind of esoteric and very, very bright. He became a Christian recently while attending college. Across the street from the campus is a welldressed, very conservative church. One day Bill decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt and wild hair. The service has already started and so Bill starts down the aisle looking for a seat. The church is completely packed and he can t find a seat. By now people are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says anything. Bill gets closer and closer to the pulpit and when he realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet. (Although perfectly acceptable behavior at a college fellowship, trust me, this had never happened in this church before). All eyes are focused on him. You can t even hear anyone breathing. The minister can t even preach the sermon until the Elder does what he has to do. And now they see this elderly man drop his cane on the floor. With great difficulty he lowers himself and sits down next to Bill and worships with him so he won t be alone. Everyone chokes up with emotion. When the minister gains control, he says, What I m about to preach, you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget. Be careful how you live. You may be the only Bible some people will ever read. Thank you Mt. Zion for serving. George Hill UMM By now the people are really uptight and the tension in the air is thick. About this time, the minister realizes that from way at the back of the church, an Elder is slowly making his way toward Bill. Now the Elder is in his eighties, has silver gray hair and a three piece suit. A godly man, very elegant, very dignified, very courtly. He walks with a cane and, as he starts walking toward this young man, everyone is saying to themselves that you can t blame him for what he s going to do. How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand some college kid on the floor? It takes a long time for the man to reach the young man. The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man s cane.

Page 10 Circuit Rider July Annual Conference Report This year, Pastor Steve attended Annual Conference, along with Joan Ritchie as a Lay Servant Member. Nito Slack was in attendance representing CCYM. On June 3, they gave their reports during the Sunday worship services. Below is Joan Ritchie s report. I attended the Annual U.M.C. Conference in Baltimore for the first time. It was an uplifting experience and I urge anyone to attend. The overall theme of the conference this year was One Beneath the Cross. The first phrase of a familiar hymn is On a hill far away, stood an old rugged cross We were asked to view the ground the cross stood on differently after the death and resurrection of Christ. That His sacrifice made the ground the cross stood on was now level. Gone should be prejudice, bigotry, racism, hatred, violence, hunger, homelessness, intolerance the super-rich and the desperately poor. It is 2018 and we haven t solved or rid the world of these problems. A few from the above list we are on the right path but our progress has been slow. Some of these problems we have either not started a conversation or they have been short talks yielding no ideas that result in action. As God s people, we need to open the dialogue, dispel myths and misinformation, pray and look for solutions. Without the dialogue there is no path forward. In that context, we asked to look at the people we do not see in our daily lives. How many times have we walked past a homeless person diverting our gaze? What if we handed them a pre-packed zip lock bag? The bag could contain seasonal items such a hat, gloves and socks, a few protein bars. Or a bottle of water, protein bars, maybe a gift card to a local fast food restaurant? Maybe we could include a card with information about how to connect to the WARM program. We include a card that says we are praying for them? What a powerful message we would send: We see you, we care and you matter. Are the homeless the only people we are not seeing? To be One Beneath the Cross we need to connect to each other. Dr. Barbara Lemmel spoke to the laity about connecting with people. Communication is the key to doing just that. She spoke about Acute Anxiety (that which has happening now or the past few minutes) and Acute Anxiety (worrying about what we perceive might happen in the future). As humans, we tend to spend most of our time in Acute Anxiety. Thus we tend to avoid any conversation that might be controversial. A conversation that we feel we know the outcome. But, Continued on pg. 11

Page 11 Circuit Rider July 2018 Continued from pg Annual Conference Report by not having that conversation, it blocks or hinders a path forward or the hope of finding a solution. Sometimes we rely on rumors that target an individual or group. So much misinformation is passed along and that results in being hurtful and hateful to the subject of the rumor. What if we didn t repeat it? What if we asked the person relaying the story to not repeat it because it serves no purpose? What if we grouped together and had an honest dialogue that leads to a real solution other than hurt or hate? Another laity speaker was Dr. Rev. Richard Vance. He was speaking mainly to the U.M.M. representatives. The statics on Domestic Violence show a marked increase. It matters little if you live in an urban or rural setting, the problem exists and has far reaching consequences. How many law enforcement offers been killed trying to intervene in a domestic violence situation? Dr. Vance spoke to the many, sometimes subtle ways, society marginalizes women. That this is part of the problem along with children raised in homes and witness the abuse. He put forth a program to tackle the problem and I am sure that the U.M.M. will be getting more information. I was impressed by the presentation by UMCOR. The Methodist organization that provides aid to disasters world-wide. Do you know that 100% of your donation goes to disaster relief? There are no fees deducted for administrative costs. An impressive $22 million has been sent to Porta Rico to rebuild churches, homes and provide much need supplies and health clinics. In addition to that, a substantial amount of money was sent to Texas, Florida and those states ravaged by fires. UMCOR provides not only immediate aid of food, water, clothing, they are there for the longer term to help rebuild lives. So, when UMCOR Sunday comes around, consider opening your hearts and wallets and reach out to those in need. All in all, I found the conference uplifting, informative and inspiring. Talking with other laity representatives within the conference was helpful. I found that they are facing many of the same challenges/problems we face here at Mt. Zion. Challenges and problems that have solutions but we need to be willing to open our hearts and minds and be part of the dialogue to move forward. Joan Ritchie

Page 12 Circuit Rider July 2018 U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T W O M E N Circle of Friends invite you to join our group in Fellowship and help us with the many Missions we do for our church! Our next meeting will be July 14, 7:30am in the blue room. Any questions, please call me anytime. Thank you and Blessings to all, Carolyn Ayers, President The UMW Circle of Friends held their June meeting on Saturday, June 9, at 7:30am in the blue room of the Family Life Center. We had 19 members in attendance. Terri Blazer opened the meeting with a devotion taken from a book titled Keep Calm and Trust God called Casting Your Cares. We then prayed The Lord's Prayer together and shared our Joys and Concerns. Breakfast followed which consisted of a delicious breakfast casserole and coffee cake made by Ginny, fruit and juice. Our next visit to The Charlotte Hall Veteran's Home for the monthly sing-a-long is on Tuesday, July 10, at 2pm. Everyone is invited to join us. A good singing voice is not a requirement, just the desire to brighten someone's day and fellowship with each other. We discussed our upcoming fundraisers. On July 28, we will have our first bake sale of the year during the United Methodist Men's Live Auction. We will have a variety of delicious homemade cakes, pies, cookies, brownies, etc. to delight everyone's taste buds and ruin your diet. Our fellowship muffin donations for the month of June will go to International Ministries. The April and May donations of $400 was given to ASP on Sunday, June 9, at the 8:30 service. After checking into the idea of having a produce auction, we decided it was not a project for us. We were afraid it would interfere with the local produce sales in the area. We already have the Farmer's Market and family roadside stands and don't wish to do anything to hurt their business. Nancy is going full steam ahead with " A Picnic in the Park ". There will be free lunches for children and teens (ages 1-18). Activities will include story time, crafts, games and more. It will be at the Park Pavilion behind Lettie Marshall Dent Elementary School from 11:30am-12:45pm on the following Thursdays: June 21 and 28, July 5, 19 and 26 and August 2. For additional information contact Nancy Cardinale. Later this summer we will be participating in The Hungry Team Yard Sale on August 31 and September 1. We will be selling hot dogs, chips, drinks and baked goods. On September 9 we will have a bake sale during The Annual UMM Car Show. Ladies get your ovens ready, this is a busy baking time for us. Our next meeting will be on July 14, same time and place. Hope you join us. God's Blessings, Carolyn Ayers, COF President May God bless you and keep you, may He make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you, may He lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.
