(Ephesians 6:4) Lesson # Title of Lesson MISSION OFFERINGS/THANK YOU Each week we will collect a weekly mission offering during our chapel service on Friday mornings. We will be going Frisbee golfing. More information was sent home with 6th-8th grade students last week. Opening Thought I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. (Ezekiel 36:26) We can change many things. A Dad can change his work schedule so he can view one of his children s sporting events. A Mom can change the meal menu when unexpected company arrives. An ominous doctor s report leads an individual to change a food diet and exercise plan. A family illness changes travel plans. A teenager girl can even change her hair color with a hair coloring kit. There are some things we cannot change. An asthmatic will always be asthmatic. A person s birth parents cannot be altered. A scar one receives from surgery can be hidden but will always remain. Experts warn that once a picture is posted on-line it remains permanent. There are some things we cannot change ourselves but can only be changed for us. A baby cannot change his diaper. A jury determines that a person was unjustly framed and declares the person innocent. Someone facing a major surgery needs a trained doctor s help. Today, Ezekiel reminds us that when it comes to spiritual matters, we cannot change ourselves. The apostle Paul reminded his readers, As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins. (Ephesians 2:1) A dead person cannot come to faith on his own, or make a personal decision for Jesus. Dead means dead. By nature we were born spiritually blind and could not see God s plan of salvation for sinners. Our Old Adam is a devilish bucking bronco that cannot be tamed. The sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God s law, nor can it do so. (Romans 8:7) By nature I have a heart of stone and deserve God s wrath and punishment. Yet Ezekiel offers hope. Someone can change us. God is the one who can change us. God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. (Romans 5:5) Yes, the Holy Spirit can change our heart from stone to flesh. The Spirit does this through the means of grace, the Gospel, working through Baptism and the Word of God. This change brings life, eternal life in heaven because of Jesus work for us. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (II Corinthians 5:21) Knowing that only the Spirit can change our hearts reminds us to hear and study God s Word often. What a partnership we enjoy as a church and school works together with the Christian home to keep our families connected to Jesus!
3 MATH PROBLEM OF THE WEEK A special part of the weekly newsletter is the math problem of the week. Answers may be submitted to the school office or ed to Mr. Micheel at peter@smwels.org Last week s answer: Unfortunately, no one answered that the train would arrive at 7:16 PM. This week s question: Emily has 21 dimes. She places them in three piles, with an odd number of dimes in each pile. In how many different ways can she accomplish this? Consider piles of 1, 1, and 19 dimes, for examples, to be equivalent to piles of 1, 19, and 1 dimes. Mark Your Calendars! St. Mark PTP is partnering with Pizza Ranch on a fundraising event on Thursday, October 13 th from 3:00 8:30pm. Pizza Ranch, located at 2451 Truax Blvd will donate 10% of all sales from 3:00-8:30 and 100% of all tips received. Watch for more information! CALLING ALL SUPERHEROES! Power Hour is POWering up for our upcoming fall session, Heroes of the Bible. Children ages 0-5 and their caregivers are being signaled to our top secret headquarters (in the St. Mark Shaker Center) where we will hear Bible stories about courage, bravery, trust and hope. We will also have amazing games, music, crafts and snacks. Sessions are September 7 & 21, and October 5 & 19 from 9:30-10:30 AM. Wear your superhero costume and join us for an EPIC time! "I can do everything through Him who gives me strength." - Eph. 4:13 New Family This week, we meet a familiar family to St. Mark but a new school family, the Naumann family: Joel, Cathryn, Titus, Abram, and baby #3 due on October 9. Joel who serves as one of our two pastors at St. Mark was born in Saginaw, Michigan. His dad has served as a pastor in Michigan in three different locations during Joel s life. His dad served in Hemlock, Michigan, until Joel was almost three. Then his dad accepted a Divine Call to serve in Riga, Michigan. Joel attended a nearby WELS school, St. Stephen Lutheran School in Adrian from Kindergarten through the beginning of 7th grade. His dad then accepted a Divine Call to Good Shepherd, Benton Harbor, where Joel finished his grade school years. He then attended one of our two Synodical preparatory schools in Saginaw, Michigan Lutheran Seminary, before attending our WELS College of Ministry, Martin Luther College, in New Ulm, Minnesota. He finally completed his pastoral training at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, in Mequon. During his vicar year (an intern year for pastors in training), he served at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Las Vegas, Nevada. He graduated from the Seminary in May of 2010 and has served at St. Mark since July of that year.
4 Cathryn was born and raised in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. She attended Grace Lutheran School during her grade school years, and then attended the other Synod preparatory school, Luther Preparatory School, in Watertown. She then attended Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee where she graduated with a degree in Communication. Since being married, Cathryn has worked various jobs. She first worked for a law firm library in downtown Milwaukee. During their year in Las Vegas, she worked at the front desk of an athletic club. She also nannied during Joel s last year at the Seminary. After moving to Eau Claire, she served as a bookkeeper for several Eau Claire restaurants which included Mona Lisa s, the Livery, and Stella Blues. She is now a full time stay at home mom. Joel enjoys many hobbies. He enjoys taking extensive bike rides and competes in a few biking races each summer. He also enjoys playing basketball with the men s group at St. Mark and is known for his talent at smoking various meats. He also enjoys traveling and mentioned that he has been to 44 of our country s 50 states. Cathryn also enjoys traveling and enjoys playing volleyball. She enjoys reading and seeing movies when she has some free time. Even though the Naumann s are not new to St. Mark, we gladly welcome them to our school family as Titus has begun his preschool year in Mrs. Anason s room. KINDERGARTEN NEWS The kindergarten class has been reviewing letters and sounds of the alphabet. In math we have been using different manipulatives for counting and sorting. This is the last week of our Fall outdoors science center and we will move on to floating and sinking. We look forward to a fieldtrip to Beaver Creek on Oct. 12th. FIRST GRADE There are many sounds coming from our room these first weeks of school as we review all of the letters of the alphabet and the sounds that they make. We are putting those sounds together to make words and read them. We have almost mastered our first set of sight words and will start on the second set today. We had a fun time when our grandparents visited our room and we read to them and did some fun patterns together. Hot lunch, phy-ed and music classes are new to us this year and we are enjoying all of them. Of course the highlight of first grade is having 3 recesses!! We hope that you can all enjoy some time outdoors during these wonderful autumn days. 2ND GRADE Our class is off to great start this school year! Everyone is excited to learn! In our writing class students wrote a personal narrative and we are learning more about nouns. Students have also been writing in their journals. On Friday we are going to Crystal Cave and Cady Cheese factory. In preparation for our cave adventure students have been learning about bats. We heard the story of Stellaluna, did a Venn diagram of birds and bats and wrote a bat story. 3 RD & 4 TH GRADE NEWS Thanks to all the parents who drove for our field trip to Irvine Parkwe had a wonderful day and the weather was perfect! We also stopped at Olson s for ice cream too! Our next field trip is to Valley Pasture Farms on October 18th. The students are bringing their science journals home this weekend. Take a look at them to see what we ve been studying! In English, we are finishing up our unit on nouns. We will study verbs the whole month of October! We had a great turnout for Grandparents Day. We are working on songs for the Fall Concert and also for songs for Veterans Day. We will be singing at the Chippewa Falls Veterans Home on November 10th at 1:00. The students are putting together baskets for the Veterans. If you would like to help, please contact me! Just a reminder to all students in volleyball; please remember to bring back your gym shoes every day. We need them for recess/phy-ed class! Have a great week! Mrs. Pitt
5 5TH AND 6TH GRADE NEWS There have been many things going on this first month. We have been looking at the Ten Commandments in catechism and applying them to our lives, looking at the founder of the Lutheran church, Martin Luther In Science class we continue our plant experiments and looking into the 6 kingdoms and specially the plant kingdom. In 5th grade World history we are looking at Mesopotamia and the early civilizations of the Earth. Finally, the students have been working on their Genius Hour project which is time I give them to dive deep into something they don t know about, but want to learn more about. They will be presenting their projects to the class at the end of October. Parents, I ed all of you at the beginning of the week access codes to Thinkwave, our online grade book. If you have any questions or did not receive it, please let me know. Also if you want to get text reminders for things going on in our classroom, text the number and the GRADES 7-8 NEWS On Fridays of each week, grades 7-8 study one of our Christian hymns in our hymnal, Christian Worship or the Christian Worship Supplement. One unique similarity for many of the hymns is that many hymn writers endured troubling lives. Some of our favorite hymns were often written during such tumultuous circumstances. Why study and memorize hymns? Learning such hymns can often stick with a person for a lifetime. Many Christians have often shared how the words from a familiar hymn bring them comfort during life s trials. Ask a 7th or 8th grade student about the story of one of the hymn writers we are studying during hymnology each week.
