5 Lesson 2: Jesus Clears the Temple Text: John 2:13 22 Date Used: Key Point: Jesus cleansing of the temple carries a twofold message: He is the Lord of the temple in the flesh, and even more important, He is the true temple, through whom our sins are paid for and we are made heirs of eternal life. Law/Gospel: I sin when I do not honor God s house or when I disturb the worship of others. Jesus is my holy temple who, by His sacrifice on the altar of the cross, cleansed me from sin and made me a member of His Body, the Church. 8 Lesson 3: Jesus Teaches Nicodemus Text: John 3:1 21 Date Used: Key Point: Since the fall into sin, we are born spiritually blind, sinful, and unclean. As children of God, we are reborn born again of water and the Spirit, so that we can see our sinfulness and the salvation that is ours in Jesus Christ. Law/Gospel: As a child of Adam, I am by nature sinful and unclean. As a child of God, I am by grace righteous and pure in God s sight. I have been born of water and the Spirit in Holy Baptism, through which God the Holy Spirit created and sustains faith in my heart to believe and trust in Jesus and gives me the gift of eternal life. 11 Lesson 4: Jesus and the Samaritan Woman Text: John 4:1 42 Date Used: Key Point: Jesus, the fountain of living water, gives the Holy Spirit, who cleanses us from sin and unrighteousness in the waters of Holy Baptism and gives us new life in Christ.
