There are many good articles. Please take time to read them! Gentle Reminder that School Begins at 8:45 AM Parents, this is simply a gentle reminder that school begins at 8:45 AM. 2 Opening Thought My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. (Psalm 22:15) Today, we continue our Lenten meditation on Psalm 22, a Messianic Psalm of King David. Have you ever been thirsty? I mean really thirsty? I remember back to a time when my family was doing a strenuous hike in the desert of Arizona. It included an incline in elevation of over 500 feet during the hike. I wanted to make sure everyone had their water bottle. I didn t realize that two of our kids drank the water in the first five minutes of the hike. With the dry air and heat, they soon got thirsty. The rest of us had to share our water with them to make sure they stayed hydrated. Everyone was relieved when we completed the hike and had a fresh supply of water. As one reads the words of Psalm 22 above, one has to be reminded of Jesus 5th set of words from the cross, Later knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, I am thirsty. (John 19:28) When one thinks of crucifixion, it is nearly impossible to imagine the pain that one suffered. As the person would hang, they would gasp for breath, and the air would dry out the throat. What thirst! Jesus words demonstrate that he was fully human. He hungered, he slept, he wept, and he thirst. Jesus had to become true man in order to be our substitute. He had to live under the Law and obey the same expectations that God demanded of us. Only as true God could he do this perfectly. This was Christ s active obedience. Through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous. (Romans 5:19) Jesus also had to become true man in order to die. Only as true God could his death count as payment for the sins of the whole world. This was his passive obedience. Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death - that is the devil. (Hebrews 2:14) What comfort we find in Jesus work as our Savior. He endured all the suffering in our place, including the suffering of a parched throat. Yes, Jesus is our substitute for us. Thank you, Jesus. MATH PROBLEM OF THE WEEK Last week s answer: Unfortunately, no one correctly answered there would be about 31 digits. This week s question: Riverside Middle School has 405 students. 3 OPPORTUNITIES FOR LENTEN WORSHIP During this Lenten season, St. Mark offers midweek Lenten worship services at both 11:00 AM and 6:30 PM. If you plan to take your child to the 11:00 AM worship service, please inform your child s teacher before the school day begins so the teacher can plan lessons accordingly. Remember that you also have an opportunity to enjoy some food and fellowship by coming to the gym to eat prior to the evening midweek worship. Food is served from 5:00-6:15 PM Divine Call Mr. Micheel reported that he has returned his Divine Call to Grace in Oshkosh. He will continue to joyfully serve as the principal at St. Mark. He thanks you for all of your thoughts and prayers while he deliberated where the Lord could best use him. New Family at St. Mark We want to wish Emily Klammer and her three children a warm welcome to St. Mark. Aidan is a new boy in our 3rd grade room, Holly is a new girl in our 2nd grade room, and Maggie, is a new girl in our Kindergarten. Make a point to greet Emily and her children and make her feel welcome to our church and school. FOUNDATIONS CHAPTER FOR MARCH Parents, please note the Foundations chapter for March is Chapter 20. It is titled, The Headwaters of Joy and is found on pages The author focuses on where we find true contentment. Finding this contentment is so difficult in today s society. Both parents and children are constantly being bombarded with the desire for More, More, More. We need to carefully teach our children to be content! Where does that contentment come from? Understanding that God provides for all our physical and emotional needs. We especially learn that God provides for our spiritual needs in sending Jesus to be our Savior. Much to ponder as you take a few minutes to read this chapter. APRIL BIRTHDAYS 5-Joey M. 8-Zoe W. 9-Bentley D. 12-Owen L. 15-Ellah H. 15-Annika K. 22-Annabelle M. 25-Elise K. 29-Mr. Schwartz, our custodian 30-Jacob B. FIRST GRADE NEWS The first graders enjoyed celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss during the month of March. We read many of his silly, rhyming books and made some lists of our own rhyming words and did some fun projects also. We had fun cheering for our Lions' teams at the pep rally. We won two extra hours of recess, so they are anxious to start using that time outside! We are happy to have sunny days and a dry playground to play on again. In our Social Studies class we learned that we live on a continent, in a country, in a state, and finally in a city. That was a lot of information for us to understand! We learned a song that lists the names of the seven continents and we love doing our U.S. puzzle and putting the 50 states in the correct places. Our Bible lessons have helped us to understand what the season of Lent is all about as we learn the lessons of Jesus' suffering and dying for us. We are excited to sing our praises for both Palm Sunday and Easter. We want to wish everyone a Happy and Blessed Easter. Welcome to Aidan Klammer! We started the fourth quarter with a new third grade boy- we are excited to have a new student in our class. That brings our total up to 8- nice and even! It s always great to have another student, and having another boy in our class is great! 2 ND GRADE We welcome Holly Klammer to 2 nd grade! We are excited to have you join our class! The 2 nd graders are learning about the human body. Each student is making themselves by tracing their body on a large sheet of paper and then adding bones, muscles and organs. Our class has been reading fables in class. We learned that all fables have animal characters and teach a moral. Our play Aesop s Fables will be Thursday April 27 th at 6pm. Our class is learning some fun fable songs! The 1 st and 2 nd graders are singing for the Lenten services on Wednesday April 5 at 11am and 6:30pm. Please plan to have your child sit in the back of church to sing with us at the 6:30pm service. Thanks!
5 THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE NEWS We have started practicing for the spring play. We are performing the play Aesop s fables on Thursday, April 27th. There are a lot of fun songs that we are singing! We are still studying the Regions of the United States- thanks to Mr. Wilkins for coming in to talk to us about the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. We learned a lot! Our test on the Northeast will be next Friday, April 7th. It s a two part test, one will be on the capitals and the other will be on state facts! The fourth graders and the third graders are working on book reports. The fourth grade book reports are due on April 13th, and the third grade book reports are due April 7th. Have a great time at the Spring Fling! Mrs. Pitt GRADE 5 & 6 NEWS Thank you to Kirsten Knickelbein for subbing for me the last few weeks while I was on paternity leave. It was such a positive experience to be home and help with the first few weeks of my daughter. We have begun the final quarter and there are many things that are going to be happening in our classroom the last two months. The first thing is Blugold beginnings for the 5th graders. On Friday, April 28th the 5th graders will get to experience a little of what UW-Eau Claire and CVTC has to offer them. They will learn the importance of planning for their success already and the importance that college can have for each of them. They will take part in a few mini classes; take a tour of the campus as well be part of pep rally with UW-Eau Claire band and cheerleaders. It is a great time for the students. The other item is River Education Days at Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge on Wednesday, May 17th. What is it? A daylong outdoor, hands-on educational event for fifth graders in Wisconsin and Minnesota. There are four (35-minute) theme stations and a keynote speaker of which the students rotate through during the course of the event. Presenters will conduct learning sessions about the river and the Mississippi River watershed through demonstrations, interactive exhibits, and hands-on activities. The four target themes for our event are: Wetlands, Prairie/Forest Habitats, Wildlife, and River History. Rotations allow for a 30 minute lunch break (students will bring a sack lunch that they will pack in and pack out). In the classroom, the students begin their final hands-on Science unit, Motion and Design. The students will experience a beginner level Physics class. They will get to build different vehicles where they complete different challenges focusing on the 3 Laws of motion of Isaac Newton. GRADES 7-8 NEWS On Tuesday, March 14, the students in grades 7-8 celebrated Pi Day in a special way. They all were asked to measure the circumference of a circle (the distance around) and the diameter of the circle (the distance across). They then divided the circumference by the diameter. We averaged the students calculations. How close did we come to the established ratio of 3.14? The students in grade 7 got 3.21, and the students in grade 8 got Not too bad. We finished celebrating Pi Day by enjoying some delicious pie topped off with ice cream. On Friday, March 17, the students in grades 7-8 traveled to the police station to learn how the police use DNA evidence to solve crimes that are committed. We had been studying this in science earlier this month. The kids were excited to also make their own mold of their thumb which police often use to make a copy of a person s body parts. We especially thank Mr. Chad Hoyord of the Eau Claire Police Department for organizing this for us.
