1 Lion s Roar St. Mark Lutheran School Principal Micheel s Minute Then the King will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. (Matthew 25:34-36) Think about all the religions in this world. All religions can be boiled down to two. One teaches that a person can save himself by his own works. The other teaches that a person is saved alone only through Christ s work. If one looks at Jesus words above, words he will speak on Judgment Day, it appears that Jesus is supporting the thought that a person s works earn him his inheritance. But one has to consider the whole parable and all of Scripture. Jesus already has separated the sheep from the goats, the believers from the unbelievers. He is pointing to their works as evidence of their faith. Remember Jesus words in John 15:5, I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. Just like it would be impossible for a branch to produce grapes on its own, so we also are unable to produce good works apart from Christ. The vine feeds the branches with the water and nutrients to produce fruit. Christ, the object of our faith, is the source of our works. Paul further cements this truth, For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:8-10) Consider a candle. How foolish it would be to think a candle can light itself. It needs a match, a source outside itself to be lit. So with us, it is impossible for us to come to faith on our own. The Holy Spirit worked through the Gospel both in our Baptisms and through the Word to create saving faith in Christ. No one can say, Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit. (I Corinthians 12:3b) Consider a candle. Whenever a candle is burning, the flame will always produce light. Whenever there is faith in Christ, it will show itself by good works, the fruits of faith. These works is what Jesus will point to as evidence of our faith in him on the last day. Find comfort in the object of our faith, Christ Jesus. Jesus redeemed us by suffering for our sins as our substitute. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming Parent Information SCHOOL CLEANING SCHEDULE Nov 22 nd Nov 23 rd Pre-K/K - Langreck 1 st King 2 nd Duquaine 3 rd & 4 th Knudson 5 th & 6 th Jensen 7 th & 8 th Koestler HOT LUNCH SCHEDULE Nov 21 st Chicken pot pie w/biscuits, orange wedges & ice cream sandwiches November 20, 2014 Dec 5 th - Sloppy Joes, pickles, potato chips, fruit, corn and brownies Dec 12 th Spaghetti French bread, applesauce and ice cream sandwiches Dec 19 th - Tacos, corn, fruit & dessert Upcoming Week at St. Mark Lutheran. 2 KINDERGARTEN The Kindergarteners will be making bread with Mrs. Roth on Monday! This is always a fun and educational experience, not to mention yummy!! Thank you Mrs. Roth! On Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. we will have a program of thanks in the Shaker Center. We will sing some songs and enjoy a treat with our families. FIRST GRADE We are enjoying the Bible lessons of Jesus using His almighty power to do many miracles. Helped many people and also led many to realize that He was the Son of God. We are learning about the many parts of our world as we study the continents. Next Tuesday we will share some of that information and some Thanksgiving songs when our parents come to visit our room. Reading continues to fill our days as we learn more words and read more books. We are also writing more sentences and short stories as our use of words grows! We wish everyone a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving. 2ND GRADE Thank you to all who donated gifts and money for Operation Christmas Child boxes. What a great project! In class we have been praying for the children who receive our boxes. These gifts will be sent to children in need in another country. I will receive an e- mail update in a few weeks of which country received our gifts. Our class has been busy doing lots of Thanksgiving projects this week! Students are creating books of things for which they are thankful. They are also creating dioramas of the first Thanksgiving. I have been reading a few Thanksgiving stories as well. Please mark your calendars! The 1st and 2nd graders are singing for advent services on Wednesday December 3 at 11am and 6:30 pm. Please plan to attend. Happy Thanksgiving! I am thankful to be a teacher at St. Mark! Yesterday the 2nd grade class had a special guest teacher from Osaka, Japan, Nobuko Fukuda! Nobuko taught the second graders wet felting wool process. Each student made a paper weight. We all had a wonderful time meeting Nobuko and making the project! Thank you to Karla Wilkins for organizing this great art project! 2007 by Education World. 3 3 RD & 4 TH GRADE Thanks to everyone who signed up for our Thanksgiving Feast on Tuesday, November 25 th! It s going to be a fun day! We just finished our unit on Wisconsin History- I think we all learned a lot about Wisconsin. We have started on Science unit- we are studying cells and plants. Our first test is next week! Just a reminder that we are singing on Sunday, November 30 th in the 10:30 service. The students should meet in our classroom before the service. This week we are also drawing names for our Christmas exchange. On Friday, I will send a note with the name of the student your child drew. Our field trip to the library is on Monday, November 24 th. If there are any parents who could drive, please give me a call! Have a great weekend! Mrs. Pitt 5TH AND 6TH GRADE NEWS You should have received information via yesterday about our Thanksgiving meal. If you did not receive the , please let me know and I will get you the information. The students decided to a white elephant gifts for Christmas this year. The students should bring a generic gift wrapped, but not named. The gift should be around $5. Also, on the Christmas party day, we will have our first auction. If you would like to donate items for our auction it would be greatly appreciated. The students have been getting paid in classroom dollars for their work this first half. They also have gotten bonuses for doing extra jobs. GRADE 7-8 NEWS The 7th and 8th grade students have been learning to collect and graph data in science class during lab experiments. Once the data has been collected, they have been learning to display that data by entering it into a spreadsheet and then graphing it. Once the data is visually represented, they have been learning how to analyze the data. It is pretty neat. Looking forward, the students in grades 7-8 are working on a creative story during English class. They will be learning some tips for creative writing and working to design a plot that seems intriguing to their classmates. Their completed stories will be shared shortly before Christmas break by Education World. Education World grants users permission to reproduce this work sheet for educational purposes only. 3
4 Our truck is revving up to bring our non-perishable, dry goods and personal care items to those in need here in west central WI. We are nearing our goal, but still need more items by NOVEMBER 30. Please consider donating. Thank you in advance to those who have contributed items and monetary donations! CHRIST LIGHT SCHEDULE Lesson # Title of Lesson Date Taught 2A The Death of John the Baptist Monday, November 24 2B The Woman in Simon s House Tuesday, November 25 3A Jesus Feeds the 5000 Monday, December 1 3B Jesus Walks on Water Wednesday, December 3 Discussion Questions: King Herod made a foolish oath that forced him to take John the Baptist s life. Discuss with your child what an oath is. When it is appropriate and when is it inappropriate to take an oath? When Jesus came to Simon s house, he showed his love to a repentant woman. Discuss with your child why is it comforting to know that Jesus freely forgives us of all our sins. Feeding the the 5000 is one of Jesus most familiar miracles. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, discuss with your child all the physical blessings God provides. How can we like Jesus thank our Father for all these blessings. Jesus permitted Peter to walk on water to Jesus. When Peter doubted and turned his focus away from Jesus, he sank. The life of a Christian is going to have many ups and downs. Discuss with your child ways that we can always keep our focus on Jesus. FRIDAY CHAPEL / MISSION OFFERING SECOND QUARTER This quarter our offerings will support Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary Chapel Offering: 11/14/14: $33.39 QTD: $ MATH PROBLEM OF THE WEEK We congratulate Simon Larson for being chosen from the list of two people who correctly answer last week s question with the three numbers 12, 15, and 25. Here is this week s question. Seven men and three dogs are standing on one side of a river. Their goal is to cross the river. They have a two seat canoe that will hold either two persons or one person and one dog. What is the fewest number of times the canoe has to cross the river in order to get all the men and dogs to the other side? Oh, yes, there is an additional problem. There must always be one man to control each dog no matter where the dog is. (For the sake of counting, when the canoe goes across the river and back to where it started, that counts as two crossings of the river.) 2007 by Education World. 7 PRACTICE PICK-UPS The basketball coaches want to remind parents to pick up their child in the upper grade wing after practice. There have been issues with students waiting out in the dark cold parking lot for parents. Players have been instructed to wait inside, so please come in and get them. 3 rd and 4 th graders will also be waiting in the upper grade wing. Thank you for your cooperation. AFTER SCHOOL BEFORE GAMES/PRACTICES In the past Mr. G or Mr. Leonard have coached all the basketball teams and have been at school to watch students after school before games or practices. This is not the case this year. If your son or daughter is going to stay after school before practice or before a game parents need to talk to Mr. G or Mr. Leonard at least a day before so that arrangements can be made. If Mr. G. or Mr. Leonard will not be around after school, players will have to go after school care or find an alternate place to go before the practice or game. They cannot be left unsupervised no matter what grade they are in. Thank You! KICK Students in grades 6-8 will be going to Action City on December 14 th for our next KICK event. We will have a pizza buffet starting at 5PM at action city. Following the buffet, there will be 2 hours of unlimited play. Look for an announcement coming home with more details.
