Background for Teachers Story Connections Jesus and the woman at the well talk about living water that will quench thirst forever. Jesus reveals himself as the Messiah to the woman. This forever changes the Samaritan woman, and she testifies to others that Jesus is the Messiah, which in turn causes them to believe. Jesus continues to invite others into the abundant life that he gives. Story Summary: Abundant Life, Living Water Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at a well. In biblical times, wells provided more than just water to villages. Wells were also a place where people would gather and talk. It is while at the well that the Samaritan woman meets Jesus and discovers who he is. At the well, Jesus breaks social conventions by not only talking to a Samaritan, but to a woman. As the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman progresses, we see several different conversations between Jesus and the woman. Each of these conversations reveals to the Samaritan woman a little more about Jesus. Each of these conversations helps the Samaritan woman see that Jesus is the Messiah, and encourages her to testify to this revelation with others in her town. The Point Even outsiders have access to God s abundant Grace through Jesus Christ. In developing a relationship with the Samaritan woman, Jesus shows again that he is not concerned with someone s reputation. The woman at the well has two strikes against her: she is a woman, she is a Samaritan, and she has had many husbands. But Jesus welcomes her into relationship without judgment. This encounter results in her sharing the story of her amazing experience with others. Bible Nuts and Bolts: Samaritans The Samaritans were a religious and ethnic group mentioned in several parts of the Bible. The differences between the Samaritans and the Jews led to a strong divide between the two groups that can be traced back to Old Testament times. The Jews considered the Samaritans unclean and refused to speak to them. The major difference between the two groups comes from the different views each group has on how to worship God. The image of the Samaritan people introduces New Testament readers to powerful themes and ideas. In the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), the Samaritan man is the one who loves his neighbor. In today s story, Jesus talks to a Samaritan woman, something that many other Jews would frown upon. Jesus shows us how to love one another, especially those who may be different than us and who we may see as enemies. Spiritual Practice: Fellowship Welcoming the stranger and the outcast and creating a place of fellowship for all people is one of the basic ideas of Jesus. But sometimes, even Christians struggle to welcome those people into their churches. After all, they look different than us. They dress and act and smell different. It is easy for us to go out and help people, but how do we react when they come to us? 4

Lesson #4-21 (3rd-6th) February 4, 2018 Lesson Plan Discover where people would hang out. You will need: Bible Whiteboard or mural paper Marker During class: 1. Today we will look in the book of John at a story about Jesus meeting someone at an important gathering spot. Have students look up John 4:1-52 in their Bibles. 2. Let s begin by making a list of some places where you and your friends might hang out. But instead of just saying where, I want you to come up here and act it out. Feel free to bring a friend with you. 3. Where are some places you meet? Allow students to act out some ideas. [Restaurant, a house, a movie theater, a park, etc.] Make a list on the white board. 4. During Bible times, people would often meet at a well. What is a well? [A hole in the ground where people may go to fetch water.] 5. In the time when the Bible was written, wells were important places for a couple of reasons. First, wells were where people would get the water they needed for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. But wells served another purpose: they were places where people would gather to hang out and talk. In today s story, we will hear about a time when Jesus met someone at a well. 5

Visualize the differences between the Samaritans and the Jews. You will need: Individually wrapped candies Before class: 1. Before serving any food, always check with participants or caregivers for students who have food allergies. Provide an alternative if necessary. During class: 1. In today s story, we are introduced to the Samaritans. Can you think of another place in the Bible where you have heard about the Samaritans? [The parable of the Good Samaritan.] 2. The Jews and the Samaritans were two different groups of people. They liked different things, especially different ways to worship God. Today we are going to take a poll on different things we like, and see what differences our group might have. 3. Invite students to stand up. I am going to ask a series of questions. If the answer to the question is yes, walk to one side of the room. Point to one side of the room. If the answer to the question is no, walk to the other side of the room. Point to the other side of the room. 4. Ask students the following questions. In between questions, give them time to walk to their respective side of the room. If you would answer yes to the question, give that side of the room one piece of candy. If you would answer no, give that side of the room a piece of candy. Do you like to sing? Do you like to dance? Do you like math? Do you like reading the Bible? Do you like chocolate ice cream? Do you like grape soda? Do you like Brussels sprouts? Do you like scary movies? 5. Repeat the process of asking questions and handing out candy for each question. After the final question, ask students to return as a large group and look at their collection of candy. 6. Do you think it was fair for me to give candy out to only the people who liked the same things as me? [No.] When I gave candy to the other side of the room, how did you feel? [Sad, mad, angry, upset, jealous.] Did you like it when someone else received candy, but not you? [Probably not.] 6

7. Tell students to place all of their candy back in the center of the group. Divide the candy evenly among the students. 8. The Jews and the Samaritans were two different groups that had different preferences and ways of life, especially when it came to worshipping God. Because of their differences, the Jews and the Samaritans were divided, and they did not talk to each other. In our story, Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at a well. 7

Read the story of the woman at the well as a skit. You will need: Activity Sheet #4-21.A Highlighters Before class: 1. Make a copy of Activity Sheet #4-21.A for each student. During class: 1. Hand each student a copy of Activity Sheet #4-21.A. 2. Assign the parts to students. Invite students to highlight their lines in the skit. 3. Read through the story together, with students reading their respective parts. 4. How did the Samaritan woman react to Jesus asking for a drink of water? [She asked him why he, a Jew, would want a drink of water from her, a Samaritan.] Jesus responds to this by saying that if she knew who he was, she would ask for what type of water? [Living water.] 5. In the story, the Samaritan woman points out that the Jews and the Samaritans believe in worshipping God in different locations. What does Jesus tell her after she says this? [That it does not matter where people worship God. All that matters is that we worship God in spirit and truth.] 6. Before the Samaritan woman leaves, Jesus tells her that he is what special person? [The Messiah.] 7. When the Samaritan woman learns that Jesus is the Messiah, what does she do? [The woman goes back to her city and tells others about Jesus.] How do these people respond? [They go back with her to the well, and after meeting Jesus they believe in him.] 8. How would you feel if you met Jesus at a place like a well? [Surprised, happy, shocked, amazed.] 8

Practice welcoming and serving each other. You will need: Simple snacks Paper cups Water Paper plates or bowls Before class: 1. Before serving any food, always check with participants or caregivers for students who have food allergies. Provide an alternative if necessary. During class: 1. In our story today, Jesus stopped to rest because he was hungry and thirsty and tired. The Samaritan woman gave him water, and Jesus gave her the gift of living water. 2. We can serve our friends, and even people we do not know, and tell them about Jesus just like the Samaritan woman told her friends about Jesus. We are going to practice that today. 3. Set out the snacks. Invite students to bring a plate of snacks and a glass of water to someone else. 4. While you are eating a snack, let s tell each other about Jesus. Take turns answering. What is your favorite thing about Jesus? What is one story about Jesus that you remember? What can you pray to Jesus about? 9

Play a game to remember that Jesus gives us living water. You will need: Buckets of water Empty buckets Plastic cups Before class: 1. For this game you will need ample space. Set the game up in a way that will allow for plenty of room for students to move. Move any tables, chairs, or furniture out of the way. It may also be useful to have a towel or two on hand in case of any water spills. During class: 1. In our story today, water is an important image. Where does water appear in our story? [Jesus and the Samaritan woman meet at a well; they talk about living water.] 2. Water is an important image in this story. The Samaritan woman and Jesus talk about living water, a special kind of water. Jesus tells the woman that if a person drinks this living water, they will not ever be thirsty again. 3. Since water is an important part of our story today, we are going to play a game with water. First, I am going to divide you into two teams. Then I will explain the rules of the game. 4. Spilt the students into two teams. On one end of the playing space, place the two buckets of water. On the other side of the space, place the two empty buckets. Have the teams line up in a straight line, each behind one of the empty buckets. 5. Today we are going to participate in a relay race. I am going to give each team an empty cup. Your job is to use the cup to transfer the water in the far bucket to the empty one in front of your team. When I tell you go, the first person in line will take the cup, walk backwards to the bucket of water, fill the cup halfway with water, then walk backwards to the empty bucket and empty the water into it. Then pass the cup to the next person and go to the back of the line. The game will continue until one team moves all of the water from one bucket to the other. 6. Hand the first person in each line the empty cup. When both teams are ready, start play. The team that moves all of their water first wins. 7. If you have time, play the game again. Change things up by switching teams or by giving the teams a different way to walk between the two buckets (for example, waddle like a penguin, spin three times then walk, etc.). 10

Research the need for clean water. You will need: Internet-connected devices Before class: 1. You may wish to turn this into a service opportunity. Check with your pastor or research water initiatives in which your congregation or denomination may already be involved, and their current needs. 2. If you choose to support an organization that your congregation is already supporting, provide the Internet links for the students to research. During class: 1. Water is a basic human need, yet there are many people in the world who do not have access to clean drinking water. Lots of churches and organizations are going things to help people around the world to get clean water. Today we are going to look up information about clean water, and consider ways that we might want to help. 2. What are some terms that we might want to search to learn more about global water issues? [Clean water, global water, building wells.] 3. Allow students time to look up sites and take notes on anything they find interesting. Give them time to share their information. 4. If you choose to do so, either give them information about how your church is helping with water initiatives, or discuss ways that the class or their families can participate. 5. Jesus promises us living water, but people need fresh, clean water, too. Let s do what we can to help people get the water they need. 11

Use puppets to tell the story. You will need: Bible Activity Sheet #4-21.B Large craft sticks Crayons Scissors Glue sticks Optional: cardboard tubes Before class: 1. Make copies of Activity Sheets #4-21.B for each student. During class: 1. Today we heard the story about Jesus. In this story Jesus met a Samaritan woman at a well. The story is found in the Bible in the book of John 4: We are going to retell our story using a set of puppets to act the story out. 3. Give each student a copy of Activity Sheet #4-21.B. 4. Have students cut each of the pictures out and glue them to a craft stick. 5. Optional: You may wish to cut sections of cardboard tubes so each student has a well for their story. The tubes could be decorated to look like stone or left plain. 6. Read through the story in John 4:1-42 as students use the puppets to act them out. 12

Optional ongoing activity. You will need: Bible Book page (found at end of lesson) Cardstock or plain paper Pens Markers or crayons Optional: three-ring binders, hole punch Before class: 1. Make copies of this week s Bible Book page on cardstock or copy paper for each student. During class: 1. Hand out Bible Book pages. 2. What are some of the important things we have learned from today s story? [Answers will vary.] 3. On the bottom of your page, please write one or two important things that you have learned from the story today. In the middle of the page, draw a picture from the story or illustrate one of the important things you ve learned. Don t forget to put your name on the back of the page, please! 4. Optional: Collect and three-hole punch the pages, and put them in individual binders for each student to be kept at church until the end of the year. If you wish, you can investigate other options for binding the Bible books through a local print shop at the end of the year instead of using a three-ring binder. 13

Before ending class, make a point to come together to pray. Use the following or say your own prayer. Allow any students who would like to include a petition to do so at the appropriate time. Give students a small cup of water. Invite them to take a sip after each sentence of the prayer. Jesus, you are so important to us that you are like water! [Sip.] You keep us alive. [Sip.] You refresh us. [Sip.] You are life to us. [Sip.] Amen. 14

Activity Sheet #4-21A Lesson #4-21 (3rd-6th) February 4, 2018 The Woman at the Well Read the story of the woman at the well as a skit. Narrator 1: Jesus took a journey from Judea to Galilee. While he was on his journey, he passed through Samaria. Narrator 2: Jesus came to the Samaritan city where Jacob s well stood. It was about noon, and Jesus was tired from walking, so he sat down by the well. Then a Samaritan woman appeared. She came to draw some water from the well. Jesus: Give me a drink of water. Narrator 1: The woman was surprised Jesus would ask her for some water. Woman: Why do you ask me for a drink of water? I m a Samaritan and you are a Jew. Narrator 2: The Jews and the Samaritans didn t have a lot in common, and they didn t get along. Jesus: If you knew who it was asking you for a drink, you would have asked him. He would have given you living water. Woman: Living water? How can you give me living water? You don t have a bucket and the well is very deep. Where do you find this water? Jesus: Everyone who drinks water from this well will be thirsty again. But everyone who drinks the water I give them will never be thirsty again. Living water changes them, and it gives them eternal life. Narrator 1: The Samaritan woman wanted some of this living water. Woman: Give me some of this living water, so that I never have to be thirsty again, or come to this well for water. Narrator 2: Jesus gave the woman a command. Jesus: Go, get your husband, and come back here. Woman: But I don t have a husband. Jesus: That is right. You have had five, and the one you have now isn t your husband. Your statement is true. Narrator 1: The woman was surprised at what Jesus told her. Woman: You must be a prophet. That is the only way you could know that about me. What do you say about worshipping God? Our people worshiped on this mountain, but you must say that people must worship in Jerusalem. Jesus: The time will come when people will neither worship God on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem. You worship one way, and we worship another. But the time will come when true worshipers will worship God in spirit and truth. God seeks those who worship that way. Narrator 2: The woman was even more amazed at what Jesus was saying to her. Woman: I know that the Messiah is coming, and when he comes he will tell us many things. Jesus: I am the one you have been waiting for. It is me who is speaking to you. Narrator 1: Then the disciples appeared. They were surprised that he was talking to the woman, but they were silent. The woman took her jar and travelled back into her city. 15

Activity Sheet #4-21A Lesson #4-21 (3rd-6th) February 4, 2018 The Woman at the Well Read the story of the woman at the well as a skit. Narrator 2: When she returned to the city, she told the people there about her meeting with Jesus. She wanted them to meet him. Woman: Come, meet this man who just talked to me. He told me everything that I have ever done! Do you think he could be the Messiah? Come and see! Narrator 1: The people left the city and returned with the woman to the well. The disciples were with him. They were surprised that he would talk to a woman. Disciple 1: Teacher, why were you talking to her? She s a Samaritan woman! We Jews don t talk to Samaritans! Narrator 1: Jesus ignored the disciple, and soon the Samaritan woman returned to the well with a group of people from the city. Narrator 2: These people believed the woman s testimony about Jesus, and they wanted to see him themselves. Woman: Look! This is the man I was telling you about! He told me everything that I have ever done. Samaritan 1: He must be a prophet! Samaritan 2: He must come from God! Samaritan 3: Can you stay with us for a while? We would like to hear more. Narrator 1: Jesus stayed with the Samaritan people for two days. He said many more things to them, and they believed what he said. Narrator 2: The Samaritans were amazed that the woman brought this man to them. They were amazed at the great things that he could do. They said to her, Samaritan 4: You were right! This man is the Messiah! We believe because we have seen the great things you told us about! 16

The Home 3 rd -6 th Living the Word: Teaching Kids God s Story Narrative Lectionary, Year 4 ( ) Last Week Lesson #4-21 John 4:1-42 Last week the story of Nicodemus introduced a series looking at the abundant life spoken of by Jesus in the Gospel of John. This Week This week the story of the woman at the well shows that everyone is welcome in Jesus abundant love. Story Summary Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at a well. In biblical times, wells provided more than just water. Wells were also a place where people would gather and talk. It is while at the well that the Samaritan woman meets Jesus and discovers who he is. At the well, Jesus breaks social conventions by not only talking to a Samaritan, but to a woman. Each conversation with Jesus reveals more about him to the Samaritan woman. The Samaritan woman sees that Jesus is the Messiah, and testifies to this revelation with others in her town. Practice: Fellowship Welcoming the stranger and the outcast and creating a place of fellowship for all people is one of the basic ideas of Jesus. But sometimes, even Christians struggle to welcome those people into their churches. After all, they look different than us. They dress and act and smell different. Make a plan to greet someone who is different than you. Next Week The Point Even outsiders have access to God s abundant Grace through Jesus Christ. Bible Nuts & Bolts Samaritans The Samaritans were a religious and ethnic group mentioned in several parts of the Bible. Jesus performs another miracle by healing a blind man on the Sabbath, causing division and doubt within the Pharisees.
