1 Lion s Roar St. Mark Lutheran School September 25, 2014 Principal Micheel s Minute Opening Thought All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. (II Corinthians 5:18-19) They had it made. A perfect home, a perfect spouse, a perfect job. God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and made them caretakers of it and rulers over his creation. God gave them one command, you are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die. Soon after, Adam and Eve fell for Satan s temptation, and trusted his word more than God s. Their sin of doubt and disobedience brought sin into the world. Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned. (Romans 5:12) Adam s sin, our sin, ruined our relationship with our Father in heaven. We were destined for eternal death in hell. But God stepped in, I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heal. (Genesis 3:15) Note God s word, there will be enmity, hatred. But it would not be between the woman and God, but between the woman and Satan. Satan had Eve in his back pocket. She was in his court, but God wouldn t let her stay there. God would reconcile that relationship between he and the woman. He even said how he would do it. Her offspring, Jesus, would suffer, a bruised heel, but he would destroy the devil. This is God s plan of reconciliation. He would send his Son to be our substitute. This Son would die on Calvary s cross, preach to the spirits in hell that he is victorious, and triumphantly rise on the third day. It would crush the serpent s head. Through Jesus, we are reconciled to God. Our sins have been completely washed away by his blood. The blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (I John 1:7b) Remember God s directive for our lives. We too are to communicate this message of reconciliation. Some of the best advertising we can do as parents is tell the community where we send our kids to school and why we send them to St. Mark. We want our children to learn about their Savior, Jesus. Share Jesus with those people that you see whether it is your friends, relatives, acquaintances, or neighbors. The message of reconciliation is one worth sharing with the world. 2 CLASSROOM NEWS KINDERGARTEN has been busy learning letter sounds. In math we are graphing, patterning, and learning to write numbers. On Oct. 8th we will take a field trip to Beaver Creek Reserve. Thanks for all the reading you have been doing at home and for taking the time to come and talk about your child's start to the year this week! FIRST GRADE Our classroom has been a fun and busy place these last few weeks. We are learning so many new routines and procedures that are part of first grade. We have received our first treat after earning 50 tally marks for quiet work time and being quiet in the halls. We have done Nursery Rhymes, phonics pages, sight word cards, and now have read a couple of small books and we are very happy that we are becoming Readers!! We have learned several hymns and many fun songs already in our music class. We enjoy having the second graders come to our room for Music, English, and Handwriting. We are very excited that our grandparents are coming to visit this week. Both the 1 st and 2 nd graders will be singing for the late service this Sunday, September 28 th. 2 nd GRADE Our class is off to a great start of our school year! Lots of learning, reading and fun happening in our classroom! We are reading stories about nature and learning about animal habitats. We are looking forward to a field trip to Beaver Creek Nature Reserve in Fall Creek on Wednesday October 8th. A field trip form will be coming home with more information. Each student has a journal for the whole school year. The students enjoy writing and adding pictures to their journal. In math class we are learning about clocks, calendars, polygons, patterns and more! Each day a student will be "Student of the Day" and does the math activities on the board. Our class is singing in church on Sunday September 28th at 10:30am. We will plan to sit in the back of the church. Please plan to attend. Thanks! Thank you parents for helping with homework, reading Christ light and signing folders. You are a great help! 3 RD AND 4 TH GRADE Thanks to all the parents who came in for Parent Teacher Conferences- I enjoyed meeting with all of you! It was great to talk with you about your child s progress in the classroom. Our field trip to Farm City days went well! Thanks to Mr. Dobberstein for setting up our field trip and too all the parents who drove and chaperoned. Mrs. Metcalf has been coming in to help with Tera Nova testing for the third graders while I work with the Fourth Graders. Next week we will work on make-ups for the students who have been absent. The fourth graders went to the library on Monday, and had a great time picking out more books to read. Thanks to Mrs. Kortbein for driving! Our next field trip is Monday, October 13th. We need one person to drive for our trip, give me a call ( ) if you can help out! Have a great October! Sharon Pitt 2007 by Education World. 3 5 th AND 6 th GRADE NEWS One month is almost in the books. We are beginning to wrap up a few things already. Here is a recap of what has happened so far: Jesus was born and now has begun His public ministry in Christ-Light. We have finished applying the first 2 commandments to our lives. We finished our chapter on earthquakes in Science and are now moving onto volcanoes. We just finished our first novel Hatchet, and are going to be putting together a final project for the book. In 5th grade World History, we finished up of the Mesopotamia area and are now moving to Ancient Egypt. In English, we continue to study the different types of sentences and the basic parts of what makes up a sentence. Stay tune for October's book orders and also information about the upper grades musical. 7 th & 8 th GRADE Students in 7th-8th grade are off to a good start! Christ Light classes this year have been focusing on 1 Peter. In the opening verses of 1 Peter, we are reminded that our actions are a way we can glorify God every day. We thank and praise God for everything he has done for us by leading God pleasing lives! Students will also be starting a long research paper for the remainder of the quarter in writing class. 7th-8th grade will be going to the library next Monday to look for quality sources! GRADES 7-8 Mr. Gustafson and Mr. Micheel divide the teaching responsibilities for grades 7-8. Mr. Gustafson teaches the students Christ Light, grades 7-8 math, social studies, and Spanish. Mr. Micheel teaches 7th Grade Catechism, hymnology, Algebra I, reading, English, and life science. This month has been unique for hymn study. Two hymn writers that stick out are Joseph Scriven and Fanny Crosby. Both had many difficult crosses to bear in their lives. Joseph was twice engaged and both times his bride-to-be tragically died during the time of engagement. Joseph wrote his hymn, What a Friend We Have in Jesus as a poem to his mother when she was on her death bed. Fanny Crosby wrote thousands of hymns. Two made it into our hymnal, Take the World But Give Me Jesus and To God Be the Glory. Fanny became blind only a few weeks after birth, and yet she made a wonderful confession of her faith as an adult. If I had been given a choice at birth, I would have asked to be blind... for when I get to heaven, the first face I see will be the one who died for me. What blessings God has given us to study hymn writers with such interesting stories about their lives! STANDARDIZED TESTING During the weeks of September 22 and September 29, the students in grades 3-8 will be taking the Terra Nova standardized testing. The results will be distributed in January. SCHOOL PICTURES Just a reminder that next week Thursday is picture day! Order forms will be sent home early next week. We are working with a new company this year, Lifetouch by Education World. 4 BEFORE SCHOOL CARE Thank you to parents who have been signing up online for before school care. Just a reminder if you need care, sign up for next week on the school website. We are also looking for additional supervisors for before school care. If you would like to be a before school care supervisor, and make a few extra dollars as well, please stmarkbeforeschoolcare@gmail.com. KICK TRUNK OR TREAT St. Mark KICK students will be organizing a "Trunk or Treat" outreach event at the end of October. Please look for upcoming details in the next few weeks on how you can help get involved! FRIDAY CHAPEL / MISSION OFFERING FIRST QUARTER Please note that each Friday will include our weekly Chapel service at 8:50 AM in the sanctuary. We also collect a weekly mission offering at this service. This note is sent to remind you that your child's offerings are greatly needed. This quarter our offerings will support Amazing Grace Lutheran Church in Roscoe, Illinois. Chapel Offering: 9/18/14: $31.05 QTD: $ MATH PROBLEM OF THE WEEK We congratulate Simon Larson who was the only person who correctly answered 24,200. Here is this week s question. Here is an easy one. When a certain number N is divided by 3, the result is the same as when N is decreased by 8. What is the number? CHRIST LIGHT SCHEDULE Parents, our Christ Light lessons certainly have a new look this year. An important component is reading and discussing the Bible history lessons at home with your children. In order to assist you with this task, we will send a weekly schedule for the Bible history lessons being taught in Preschool - Grade 6. Feel free to use the discussion questions included in this newsletter with your children. Lesson # Title of Lesson Date Taught 6A Jesus First Miracle Monday, September 29 6B Jesus Heals the Official s Son Wednesday, October 1 Discussion Questions: At Cana, Jesus turned water into wine. This was his first miracle. Ask your child to list more miracles that Jesus performed. What do these miracles reveal to us about who Jesus really is? Why did Jesus need to be true God? (Answer: only as true God, could he live perfectly; only as true God, could his death pay for the sins of the whole world) Jesus assured the official that his son had been healed. The man took Jesus at his word. Identify some comforting promises that God makes to us in the Bible. Why do we know these promises are always true? 2007 by Education World.
