Psalm 66:1-2 The newsletter of First United Methodist Church of Waynesburg October 2013 Dear Waynesburg First Family, I greet you my brothers and sisters in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I give thanks to God always for you because of the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus. (1 Corinthians 1:4 RSV ) May God bless us, one and all, as we work together to grow God s kingdom here in Waynesburg. One of the ways we can work together to build up God s kingdom here in Waynesburg is to get to know our neighbors and invite them to get to know Jesus. We have already started the process with /Out Café. We will add to that by becoming like the disciple, Matthew, who invited those he knew to come to his house and meet Jesus. During this month we will receive training on how to invite from the outreach program, My Hope America with Billy Graham. Matthew 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." New International Version Another way we work together to build God s kingdom here in Waynesburg is to continue to grow as disciples. We do that by attending a worship service on a weekly basis. We grow even more when we attend Fish Club, formerly Sunday school, on a weekly basis. We grow when we talk to God and read God s word daily. How are you doing? Hebrews 10: 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching. 4 Imagine No Malaria A killer in the Dark - Has your local NBC station scheduled the showing of this documentary narrated by NCIS star Pauley Perrette about how mosquitoes destroy lives? Check the list of stations scheduled to broadcast this documentary. If it hasn t been scheduled, please contact your local NBC station today and ask for it to be aired between now and Nov. 3. DAY TRIP TO MISSION BARN There will be a trip to the Mission Barn on Sat., Oct. 19th which will be leaving at 8:00 a.m. and returning around 6:00 p.m. This is open to everyone in the church. Loss, Grief, and Adjustment An educational support group to address coping with the loss of your loved one will meet six consecutive Monday evenings at The Donnell House at 10 Leet St., Washington, PA. The series begins on Oct. 7th. And ends on Nov. 11th. 5 United Methodist Women The United Methodist Women met on September 11th, with nine members in attendance. Janet Robinson presided at the business session. Jane Ross reported on her granddaughter's benefit violin program, that enabled her to receive a Black Lab Partner from Canine Partners for Life, and expressed gratitude for those who attended the program or made contributions. Carol Corwin led the Pledge Program, "Ready to See", a perspective on the involvement of United Methodist Women with people who are marginalized. Refreshments were served by Frances Crawford and her committee. The October meeting will be a program on Quilting, presented by Pam George Valone. All women of the church are invited to attend the meeting, which will be at the Parish House on Wednesday, October 9th at 7:00 P.M. All ladies of the church are welcome to attend. The UM Women are invited to have lunch at the Mt. Morris UMC October 12, Cost is $8.00. Need to have reservations in by Oct. 6. This is to attend the Fall Greene Sub District Get Together. Please let Janet Robinson know if you are planning on attending. Also, they will have their annual meeting on Saturday Oct. 19, 2013 at the Aliquippa First United Methodist Church. 6 Hot Metal Bridge Church in Pittsburgh conducts a homeless ministry each Saturday from noon-3:00 p.m. going out into the community and handing out bags of toiletries and food to Pittsburgh s homeless. If you are interested in serving with Hot Metal Bridge Homeless Ministry please see Alex Evanoff, Mission and Youth Director. We are hoping to form a small group from First UMC to go and serve. Did you know? Antioch Connection, a small group at First UMC, has fundraising gift cards for sale on a weekly and monthly basis? shows all the cards we CAN order and on the back heating register is an order form showing the most popular cards purchased. Each store or business participating gives Antioch a percentage of the value of the gift card, yet it does not deduct that from the value of the card for your use. It has been a very steady source of income that is used for mission, improvements within the church, etc. Some folks buy their groceries with Giant Eagle gift cards and earn fuel points, or buy other gift cards sold by Giant Eagle. Others buy their gas with Sheetz Cards (money they would spend anyway). Christmas/Weddings & Graduation are always a good times to give gift cards. While it was reported on the news that cards go unused, most people do use them and can budget with them as well. See Connie Hart for ordering cards. Thanks. 7 The 4th Wednesdays at Washington FUMC A Family Friendly Seminar Series: Risky Behavior and its Consequences, will continue at First UMC Washington. These programs are intended to address critical issues being faced today by our children, youth, and young adults. For information call: The seminars are usually held at First Church Washington, 29 N. College Street, Washington, 15301, about it. Erie County Tornado Recovery The end of May saw a tornado touchdown in several communities in Erie County. While not as dramatic as Oklahoma tornado damage, several people lost everything without insurance. A recovery group to help those people is being formed by Jim Parkinson and Bill Jacka (conference media person) is developing videos to share. A link to one of the loss stories follows: A fund has been set up with First UMC Union City, PA 2013 summer storms recovery fund. Rev. Jim Parkinson, First UMC, Union City, PA will be happy to answer any questions. Funds raised for this recovery may be given through First UMC Waynesburg and a check will be forwarded to Union City First UMC. Hurricane Sandy Disaster To donate for this disaster, put a check in the offering with Hurricanes 2012, Advance # in the memo line. You can also text the word RESPONSE to to give an immediate $10 donation. Volunteer Opportunity Kane Dist. Is organizing another VIM trip to the Forked River, NJ area on Sat., Oct. 26, The cost will be approx. $ for the week. They love homemade goodies. We are now serving picnic food consisting of sand wiches or sloppy joes or hot dogs plus raw veggies, fruit and cheap chips. We find this meets a need and would welcome contributions from our church friends and members. This year s gardens have been good to us. In the winter we ll switch to soups, chili, crackers and breads. Thanks to our current contributors and volunteers and to the Faith Promise Givers who keep us going. We are one year old now and growing steadily. Music was added in August to our front porch (relational) ministry by one of our attendees. We are blessed! Questions? The luncheon is a time for the congregation and visiting students to share food and fellowship and to get to know each other. Give Your Just Desserts Don t forget that Saint Ann s is in need of desserts for the Good Neighbor Lunch. The desserts can be dropped off daily at Saint Ann s or given to Wayne Hart and he will deliver them for you. Saint Ann s provides lunch for low income individuals on Mondays and Thursdays and they really appreciate our continued support. This is the only hot meal that some of these folks eat all week. Previously the desserts were provided by Shop & Save but now that they are no longer in business, this is a need that we can help to meet. Paws before you throw that away. Recycle and get Ca$h for Critters The Humane Society of Greene county is now accepting, in addition to ink cartridges and used cell phones, used digital cameras, GPS units, and IPODS. These items can be dropped off at the shelter, Radio Shack or given to Connie or Wayne Hart. They will be recycled and the money earned will be used to care for the abandoned and abused animals who find their way to our care.
