David & Shelley Pos: Ministry of Music Sunday, November 12 th, 2017 Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost The suffering of people at the end of life has been enough to legalize euthanasia and physician-assisted assisted suicide but interestingly, not enough to mandate excellence in palliative care for all Canadians. This is an ongoing need and in my view, a tragedy. Dr. Balfour Mount Often referred to as the father of palliative care in North America, Dr. Mount has been instrumental in the establishment of palliative care services, research and teaching. He is the founding Director of the Royal Victoria Hospital (Montreal) Palliative Care Service, as well he is as an academic, advocate and mentor. He is a member of the Order of Canada and Officer of the National Order of Quebec. We live in a world of restriction and regulations; We live in a world where freedom is celebrated. We live in a world full of noise and chaos; We live in a world full of places of serenity and stillness. We live in a world filled with so many paradoxes; We live in a world filled with so many blessings! We come from different places to this sacred place of communal caring and celebration. Let all those pieces, and so much more, sit alongside all that others bring. All a part of the gift of who we are. All a part of the sacredness of whose we are. Dr. Paul Kalanthi reflected on his life and death in his book: When Breath Becomes Air We are honoured to welcome as our special guest Dr. Anne Kwasnik Dr. Kwasnik has been a Family Physician since Growing up in Queens, NYC, she completed Medical School in Poland, residency training in Kentucky, then worked in private practice and in an academic centre in Chicago, Illinois. In 2003, her husband and their 3 children moved with her to New Glasgow. After 30+ years of practicing Family Medicine, she enrolled in a Fellowship in Palliative Care and is currently the Medical Director of the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Service. We also welcome those members of the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society who have joined us this morning. 6
