2 From the Pastor s Desk First of all, thanks to everyone who took a viability survey, they were all taken so hopefully we will get some good feedback. Please remember to have those turned in by Nov. 1 st. I had a wonderful experience this past week I want to share with you. You probably saw on the news where the remains (relics) of St. Maria Goretti were solemnly exposed for veneration at the Cathedral in Belleville, IL. My mom and I went over to see them last Monday. What a beautiful event it was! If you ve ever been to the Cathedral there, you know it is a very big church and it was packed! The pews were totally full, people were standing, and the line to see the relics were all around the church and to the front door. A priest friend of mine said he had gone earlier in the day and he waited over two hours to see the relics. St. Maria Goretti was a little girl who was born in 1890 and died in She lived in Italy and her parents were poor famers, tragically her father died leaving her mother to raise her. In 1902 an 18 year old neighbor boy Alessandro, attacked her and attempted to assault her purity in the most vile way. Maria resisted heroically, and so the neighbor boy began stabbing her with a knife, fourteen times to be exact. Maria was taken to the hospital where she eventually died, but not before she gave her forgiveness to her aggressor. The aggressor, Alessandro, was unrepentant until he had a dream where Maria appeared to him and presented him with fourteen lilies (flowers of purity) one lily for each stab wound. Alessandro repented while in prison serving his sentence. When he was released he went to Maria s mother and begged for her forgiveness too, which she gave. Alessandro then joined a Franciscan monastery to live out the rest of his life. St. Maria Goretti was canonized in 1950 and both her mother and Alessandro were present for the ceremony. She is the patron saint for young girls and purity. St. Maria Goretti s relics have left Italy only twice before I believe, so it was an historical moment to see them. Her bones are kept in a wax figure that resembles what she looked like and she lies peacefully in a glass casket so the faithful can always be reminded of the beautiful Christian witness of martyrdom, purity, and mercy, that she exemplified and she has become a shining light in our church of holiness. Our young people are capable of reaching great heights of holiness and being heroic disciples of Christ. St. Maria Goretti is a beautiful patron for them! Her feast day is July 6 th. God Bless, Fr. Kunz How can we honor the saints? Excerpts From The The New Saint Joseph Baltimore Catechism We can honor the saints: first, by imitating their holy lives;, second, by praying to them; third, by showing respect to their relics and images. Respecting their relics and images means not merely showing respect to stone and wood and paper, but to the persons these things represent. Relics and images remind us of the saints whom we would otherwise tend to forget. Why do we honor relics? We honor relics because they are the bodies of the saints or objects connected with the saints or with Our Lord. 2 Welcome to St. Clare Catholic Church
