7 Worship Notes The Confession of Belhar The 221st General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) approved amending our Book of Confessions by adding the Confession of Belhar, and recommended this amendment to the presbyteries for their vote. As of April 28, 2015, adding Belhar has been approved by more than the required two-thirds majority of the presbyteries. It will be presented to the 222nd GA (2016) for the final approval and enactment. The Office of the General Assembly encourages us to consider it in worship and in study. Go to and search for Belhar Confession to access the full Confession, as well as commentaries. *********** The Prelude and Postlude today are compositions using the plainchant tune associated with the Pentecost text Veni Creator Spiritus. As is stated in our hymnal for hymn #278, this text, originally written in Latin in the 9 th century, has had long and active use. It has appeared in the Anglican prayer books since 1662, and has long been associated with this tune. Here the tune is set by the early 20 th century French composer, Maurice Duruflé. *********** Pastor Emily is away for Memorial Day weekend and will return May 26. 5

OPPORTUNITIES FOR WORSHIP MAY 31 SERVICE OF MUSIC - We are Claimed by God in Jesus Christ, Called to live as a community of faith, Sent to participate in the unfolding of God s kingdom on earth. So states our Mission Statement. The Service of Music on May 31 at 10:00 a.m. celebrates this statement through song. The anthems come from many musical traditions. The Bible is made up of stories all kinds of great, sad, surprising, scary, fantastic stories. Jesus taught his disciples and his followers by telling stories. Jesus life story is the greatest story ever told. This summer, for our summer sermon series we are going to hear Bible stories all kinds, the lighthearted ones, the melancholy ones, the joyful ones and the terrifying ones. We will sing the Bible stories, preach about the stories, read the stories and maybe even act out the stories. Some of our favorite Bible stories may fall within the common lectionary and some may not so we will not feel bound by the lectionary this summer. What is your favorite Bible story? What is a story you would like to hear about in worship this summer? If there s a story from the Bible that you would like to hear this summer in worship let us know. We can t guarantee that all of the suggested stories we receive will be worked into the nine weeks of July and August, but we ll try. If there is a Bible story that you would like to hear in worship this summer then Pastor Emily Emily@Lewinsville.org or Sandy in the church office SAlbrecht@Lewinsville.org. 9
