7 ANTHEM Song of Peace Arnold Sherman Song of Peace is a reflection of the way the world has treated peace almost from the beginning of time. The gentle round DONA NOBIS PACEM is given a rather harsh, angular treatment, representing the needless violence and senseless acts of terrorism that plague the world almost on a daily basis. An original, lament-like melody is interspersed with the round, echoing the psalmist s cry, How long O Lord, how long? The dissonance builds and rises, and finally stops. Out of the cacophony comes the round once again, this time in a much more harmonious setting, signifying our eternal hope that peace will come one day for all of humankind. 10 Handbells at Lewinsville Lewinsville Presbyterian Church handbells are made by the Malmark Bellcraftsmen in Plumsteadville, PA. Nancy and Roy Mitchell donated the first of our bells. More were donated by Allan Eckstein, Olive Still, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Shaw, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Maguer, Loyal and Helen Williams, Anna and James Shaw, Earl and Janet Merritt, Linda Byrd Briscoe, Roy and Betty Palmer, Lee Billups and others in the mid-1980 s through early 1990 s. One of our sets has handle and casting inscriptions where Lewinsville donors honored or memorialized special people in their lives. Lewinsville owns 124 handbells (two five-octave sets plus one G2) and 98 choirchimes (one five-octave and one three-octave set). Originally, tuned sets of handbells were used by change ringers to rehearse outside their bell towers. Practicing the complicated algorithms of change ringing can easily bother the neighbors, so handbells offered them a way to continue ringing without the high sound over the community. The handbell sets used by these change ringers had the same number of bells as in the towers generally six or 12. The bells used in American handbell choirs are almost always English handbells. "English handbells" is a reference to a specific type of handbells, not to the country of origin. The Lewinsville bells were hand casted by Malmark Bellcraftsmen in Plumsteedville, PA. The clapper on an English handbell is on a hinge and moves back and forth in a single direction, unlike a school bell in which the clapper swings freely in any direction. It also has a spring that holds the clapper away from the casting after the strike to allow the bell to ring freely. A handbell choir is a group that rings with melodies and harmony, as opposed to the mathematical permutations used in change ringing. The bells are typically arranged chromatically on foam-covered tables, as on the keyboard of a piano. Unlike an orchestra in which each musician is responsible for their own musical part, a bell ensemble acts as one instrument, with each musician responsible for specific notes, playing assigned bells whenever that note appears in the music. Traditional ringing technique only allows one ringer to ring two bells at a time (one in each hand). Depending on the number of bells needed for a particular piece of music and the number of ringers in a choir, it may be necessary for each ringer to ring more than two bells at a time or in short succession. There are also many techniques that change the sound of the bell as it is rung. Watch and listen for these techniques this morning. 8

Our loving sympathy and prayers are extended to Eric Baker, Rachel Russell, and Teddy Baker on the death of Eric s father, Allen Baker, on May 7. 12 CONGREGATIONAL POTLUCK SUPPER & SING-ALONG - The ChristCare ministry of Lewinsville will sponsor a congregational potluck supper and fellowship gathering. Join us Sunday, May 21, from 5 7 p.m. for an evening of good food, fellowship, and a congregational-wide sing-along. All congregants, including children, are invited to attend and encouraged to bring a friend. Whether you re a member of a ChristCare group, a former member, interested in learning more, or just want to sing some songs, please plan to come as we celebrate the end of the church program year! If there is a particular song, hymn or choral refrain you would like to sing we will be gathering suggestions. Call Elaine Baker, , for reservations and information on parking, etc. THE SUMMER MISSION PROJECT (SMP) - is celebrating its 28 th year of serving others. June 25- July 1 a group of youth, young adults, and adults will be traveling to Johns Island, South Carolina, to work with Sea Island Habitat for Humanity to frame houses. We invite you to partner with us in this vibrant ministry of serving others. During the month of May, we encourage you to grab an envelope from the board in St. Andrews Hall and fill it with (at least) the dollar amount listed on the front of the envelope. Envelopes can be returned to the offering plate or the SMP mailbox in the mail room. Thank you for your continued support and partnership. We are excited to see how God works through us this summer. YOUTH/YOUNG ADULTS INVOLVED IN MISSION We are making a list of all of the youth and young adults from the congregation who have felt called to service in the world whether through Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, a Young Adult Volunteer Program, Teach for America or some other extended mission involvement. 13 MCLEAN SYMPHONY AT LEWINSVILLE! The McLean Symphony was established in 1971 as an all-volunteer chamber orchestra and has had a single conductor for all this time, Maestro Dingwall Fleary. During its history it has been dedicated to providing good music at affordable prices to area residents. We will welcome the Symphony to Lewinsville on June 4 at 7:00 pm in a concert that will feature our organ played by organist David Lang. David received his Bachelor of Music in choral music education and sacred music from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. He attained his Master of Music in Organ Performance from the University of Louisville. Lang came to the Washington D.C. area in Over the years, he has gained prominence as a leading professional accompanist, vocal coach, concert organist, and choral conductor. Now in his seventh season as artistic director for the Reston Chorale, Lang concurrently serves as Director of Music at Saint Dunstan s Episcopal Church in McLean, Virginia and as keyboard artist for Washington Hebrew Congregation. He will be performing the Symphony No. 1 for Organ and Orchestra in D Minor, Op. 42 by Alexandre Guilmant in our Sanctuary on our Gress-Miles organ. Tickets may be purchased by going to the McLean Symphony website or the link shown at REFORMED INSTITUTE 500 TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT On June 10, Dr. Leanne Van Dyk, President of Columbia Theological Seminary (Decatur, GA) and Professor of Theology, will speak on Does Christian Unity Matter Anymore? at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 1125 Savile Lane, McLean, VA ( 10am to noon with coffee at 9:30am. The event is free and open to the public.
