7 A NNOUNCEMENTS FOR THE W EEK OF D ECEMBER 31, 2017 ***WITHIN OUR PRAYERS*** Our loving sympathy and prayers are extended to Evelyn Jones and family on the death of Glenn Jones on December 28. Help carry one another s burden, and in this way you will obey the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2 ALL NAMES ON THE PRAYER LIST HAVE BEEN REMOVED FOR PRIVACY REASONS. THE PRINTED ANNOUNCEMENTS INCLUDED IN THE BULLETIN ON SUNDAY MORNINGS CONTAINS THE COMPLETE LIST. The weekly prayer list includes those members and friends of the church family who are in a short-term temporarily serious or critical situation. Please remember in your prayers all those listed. Names placed on the weekly list will be removed after six weeks unless the church office is requested otherwise. We need your help to keep our prayer lists accurate and current. Please refer to the website, for further information on activities. 1 st Sunday of the Month Collections SHARE MONTHLY FOOD CONTRIBUTIONS - Remember to bring your canned and dry food donations to the Narthex next Sunday, January 7. We deliver the contributions to SHARE. SHARE serves people in our area, and there is a great need for non-perishable foods. Please no open or out-of-date products. DEACONS FUND - Following worship next Sunday, January 7, the Deacons will receive contributions for the Deacons Fund in the Narthex as you leave the Sanctuary. The Deacons Fund is used to provide short-term assistance to those in our community who have emergency needs. CHRISTMAS JOY OFFERING - During Advent and Christmas we turn our eyes to Bethlehem and celebrate the wondrous gift of Jesus Christ, our Savior. By giving to the Christmas Joy Offering, you honor this gift by providing assistance to current and retired church workers in their time of need and developing our future leaders at Presbyterian-related racial ethnic schools and colleges. You may put a check in the offering plate and designate in the memo line Christmas Joy Offering. Offering envelopes are available in the pew racks. Please give generously. 5
8 THE FLOWER DONATION CHART - for 2018 is in Heritage Hall (outside the volunteer room), so sign up to donate Sunday flowers in memory of a loved one or in celebration of a special occasion. You may also sign up at The recommended minimum contribution for sanctuary flowers is $100 and $60 for narthex flowers. ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION CLASSES BEGINNING JANUARY 7 THE GREAT SPIRITUAL MIGRATION: HOW THE WORLD'S LARGEST RELIGION IS SEEKING A BETTER WAY TO BE CHRISTIAN: How are we to be "church" in the future? Brian McLaren (global activist, pastor, and public theologian) in his book The Great Spiritual Migration suggests that the future for Christianity is going to be great because people are shifting from "lists of beliefs" to love; from the image of a violent and scary God to that of a renewing Spirit; from organized religion to going out in the messy world and creating good. In other words, he is, in part, re-inventing the Reformed Church tradition. In addition to McLaren's book, other resources in the form of songs, articles and even some biblical stories will be utilized to help provoke an informal discussion and imaging about what "church" might be like in the future. Class led by Rachel Russell; Location Library Books will be available for purchase ($12/book). SEEKING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AS A SPIRITUAL CALLING - The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) represent the pledges of 193 countries (2015), focusing on 17 life changing issues that can either expand or inhibit human dignity and social justice, with more than 170 development targets that build upon each other and can be monitored for achievement. They are the most comprehensive and diverse initiatives ever undertaken to improve the lives of human communities and the health of the planet. The new SDGs build on the successes and lessons learned in the UN Millennium Development Goals. This class will offer an overview of the Sustainable Development Goals, discuss their spiritual relevance, and practical applications as a spiritual calling for ministry. Class guest leaders: Richard A. Hoehn, former Associate Professor of Church in Society at Texas Christian University and Director of Bread for the World Institute where he produced Hunger No More, materials on the UN Millennium Development Goals for the major Protestant denominations, the U.S. Catholic Conference, MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, and in conversation with the Islamic Society of North America. Michael Kuchinsky, former Professor of Political Science and Global Studies at Gardner-Webb University has written on issues of development, peace-building, interfaith concerns, and pedagogy. 6
9 CHURCH BLOOD DRIVE, JANUARY 7, Sign up for our next blood drive using the new and improved process on the church website or sign up in St. Andrews Hall before and after services TODAY. Please give the gift of life! LPC SINGLE SENIORS - are invited to the next fellowship lunch Friday, January 12, in the Chapel beginning at 11:30 am. Bring $5 to cover a simple lunch. Elaine Baker will entertain us with humorous and timely stories and nuggets from her collection on aging and funny life happenings. For further information and to RSVP, contact Lois Dokken (manpadokken@aol.com / ) or Wendy Maiwurm (wmaiwurm@cox.net / ). CELEBRATE JANUARY WITH THE SECOND SATURDAY SET! - Ever wonder which state or university produced the most members of the Second Saturday Set? Or who has the most grandchildren? Or has served on Session the most times? We'll find out in January at the Who Are We? party. The SSS certainly doesn't have an official membership, but if you're on the list, regardless of whether you've been attending events for over 40 years or just once or twice, you'll receive a very short survey to complete by January 11. Then come to the Gauglers on Saturday, January 13, at 7:30 pm, take a quiz and learn amazing things about your fellow congregants... like who roller skated in the halls of the CIA! Even if you are unable to join us on the 13th, you need to fill out the survey. All of our out-oftown friends, from Maine to California, Minnesota to Carolina and stops in between, have already received the survey and are conscientiously sending it back. And if you're not on the list, gauglerr@aol.com and you'll receive a survey form. So here are the directions: complete the survey, call or Bob and Cathy Gaugler ( ) to say you'll come, bring an hors d' oeuvre or dessert to share and your favorite adult beverage... and then you'll discover new and fascinating facts about people you've known for many years or just a few months.
