We just celebrated Mother s Day and Father s Day over the past month or so, and here he is telling us that if we love our mother or father more than him we are not worthy of him. Same for son and daughter, and we could probably throw in husband and wife for good measure. OK, we all agree that we should love God more than any human being. If the Israelites actually had a country 2,000 years ago instead of being conquered by the Romans, I am pretty sure that Jesus would also have said, Whoever loves country more than me is not worthy of me. Now some people are going to say, Whoa! You re telling me that there could be a conflict between my country, patriotism, and my faith, especially as we are about to celebrate the birth of our nation on the Fourth of July?! The answer, quite simply and plainly is, Yes. Neither of our political parties is fully aligned with Catholic Christian values, and there are many laws of our land that are antithetical to our faith and Christian values take abortion as low hanging fruit. But what does Jesus mean by love? He defines love quite clearly when he says, Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me (John 14:21). And St. John makes it even more clear, For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments (1 John 5:3). So I believe that we, as Catholic Christians, are called to bring our faith and values to our nation to make it better. I am not arguing for a theocracy by any means. However, I believe that we have to ask ourselves on a regular basis, Does our politics drive our faith, or does our faith drive our politics? We are stewards of our nation. Let us ask God for His Spirit to guide us and strengthen us as me move forward as One Nation under God. May we love God more than everything and every person, and may we remember that loving God means doing His will and following His commandments. No one said that this would be easy. In fact, Jesus said, Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. This week, know that you will bringing hope to the poor by your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Call for assistance, or if you are interested in volunteering to help poor families in your community. It is the duty of citizens to contribute, along with the civil authorities, to the good of society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity, and freedom. The citizen is obligated in conscience not to follow civil authority when they act contrary to moral law. CCC # :30 Mass for 4th of July will be cancelled 4

This easiest answer to this is no. However, like everything in law (both church and civil), there are exceptions to the rule. First, a Catholic may not, under any circumstance, receive Communion in a Protestant church s religious service. This is covered in the Church s Code of Canon Law, canon 844. Just as non-catholic, Christians are not generally permitted to receive Holy Communion at a Catholic liturgy, neither may Catholics receive at a Protestant church. The Holy See s Instruction Redemptionis Sacramentum (issued in March 2004) reiterated this in paragraph 84. Now for the exception: if a baptized Roman Catholic who has already received first Holy Communion is present for the celebration of the Eucharist in one of the uniate Catholic Churches, e.g., Byzantine Catholic, Maronite Catholic, etc., then the Roman Catholic may receive Holy Communion. In the Orthodox Churches, while Roman Catholic law would permit you to receive, the laws of the Orthodox Church do not. So, in this latter case, it is best to check with the Orthodox priest who is the celebrant of the Eucharist to see if he would permit you to receive. 7
