Walther Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am among them. Matthew 18:20
(lease remain seated) Welcome and Announcements Invocation We gather for worship in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The Beginning (lease stand as you are able) Faith of Our Fathers 1 Faith of our fathers, living still in spite of dungeon, fire, and sword. Oh, how our hearts beat high with joy whene er we hear that glorious word. Faith of our fathers, holy faith, we will be true to you till death. 2 Faith of our mothers, daring faith, your work for hrist is love revealed, spreading God s word from pole to pole, making love known and freedom real. Faith of our mothers, holy faith, we will be true to you till death. 3 Faith of our sisters, brothers too, who still must bear oppression s might, raising on high, in prisons dark, the cross of hrist still burning bright. 2 Faith for today, O living faith, we will be true to you till death. 4 Faith born of God, oh, call us yet, bind us with all who follow you, sharing the struggle of your cross until the world is made anew. Faith born of God, O living faith, we will be true to you till death. Text: Frederick W. Faber, , st. 1, alt.; Joseph R. Alfred, b. 1947, sts. 2-4 Text sts. 2-4 Joseph R. Alfred, admin. Augsburg Fortress. (lease be seated) onfession and Forgiveness We confess together. Forgive us when we are frightened of the future or pull back from the demand of your calling. Forgive us when we fail to sense your presence in our past, to acknowledge your grace in the present moment, and to trust you for our future. Through your Spirit we offer ourselves in discipleship. We stand together as your disciples. We seek renewed and renewing faith. Touch us now with your Spirit, Lord. We are forgiven, loved, and renewed. Thanks be to God. 3
The Building Built On a Rock We are God s house of living stones, built for his own habitation; he fills our hearts, his humble thrones, granting us life and salvation. Were two or three to seek his face, he in their midst would show his grace, blessings upon them bestowing. Through all the passing years, O Lord, grant that, when church bells are ringing, many may come to hear God s Word where he this promise is bringing: I know my own, my own know me; you, not the world, my face shall see; my peace I leave with you. Word (lease stand as you are able) Glory, Glory, Hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! since I laid my burden down. Glory, glory, hallelujah! since I laid my burden down. Feel like shouting, Hallelujah! since I laid my burden down. Feel like shouting, Hallelujah! since I laid my burden down. Text: African American spiritual Text: Nicolai F. S. 4 Gospel: Mark 1:14-20 The Gospel according to Saint Mark, the first chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. 14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15 and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news. 16 As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, Follow me and I will make you fish for people. 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. The Gospel of the Lord. raise to you, O hrist. (lease be seated) Sermon astor Jeff Mikyska (lease stand as you are able) You Have ome Down to the Lakeshore 1 You have come down to the lakeshore seeking neither the wise nor the wealthy, but only asking for me to follow. Refrain Sweet Lord, you have looked into my eyes; kindly smiling, you ve called out my name. On the sand I have abandoned my small boat; now with you, I will seek other seas. 2 You know full well what I have, Lord: neither treasure nor weapons for conquest, just these my fish nets and will for working. Refrain 3 You need my hands, my exhaustion, working love for the rest of the weary-- a love that s willing to go on loving. Refrain 4 You who have fished other waters; you, the longing of souls that are yearning: O loving Friend, you have come to call me. Refrain Text: esáreo Gabaráin, ; tr. 5 and serve. Will you encourage these signs of the Kingdom in ole s life? If so, please respond, We will. Katie and auly, you have been chosen as godparents for ole and are making a significant commitment to reflect the love of God in his life. I ask you, will you pray for him, love him, encourage his spiritual growth and continue to do all you can do so that he may grow in faith in God? If so, please respond, I will with God s help. (lease be seated) Baptismal Font Baptism of ole Walter Witten (We rejoice in the baptism of ole, infant son of Kayte (Kettler) & Dan Witten. ole was born on March 8 th, His godparents are Katie and auly Bachinski.) 8 We have gathered as God s community around the waters of new life. The word of God comes to us through the prophet Ezekiel: I will take you from the nations, and gather you from all the countries, and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean. I will give you a new heart. I will put my spirit within you. You shall live in the land that I gave to your ancestors; and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. Kayte and Dan, as we gather in this community we come together to praise God in worship, song and prayer, delight in the diversity of all of God s children, support one another, gather to grow through God s grace, and to reach out eople of God, do you promise to support ole and pray for him in his new life in hrist? We do. rofession of Faith I ask you to profess your faith in God, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? I renounce them. Epiphany reed We confess our faith. I believe in God, the creator of the universe, who spoke, Let there be light! and there was light, setting in motion all of creation and blessing it to this day. 9
10 I believe in Jesus hrist, the light of the world That shines in the darkness. The darkness cannot overcome it. He embodied humanity in the image of God. In kindness, truthfulness, humility and devotion, He suffered for the greater good. He was and is the Son of God. He died on the cross for us, God s saving grace! I believe in the Holy Spirit, The guiding light of God in our world. Through his spirit, God penetrates and reveals The darkness of human sin, helps people grow and become the people they are meant to be. I believe in the power of transformation, Through God s spirit and light, Here in this world and in the world to come. Blessed are you, holy God. You are the creator of the waters of the earth. You are the river of life. Glory to you for oceans, for rivers and creeks. Honor to you for cloud and rain, for dew and snow. Your waters are below us, around us, above us: Our life is born in you. ome also into this water and into ole as he is baptized. reate us all anew so that we may serve this needy world. To you be all praise and honor. ole Walter, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your sons and daughters new birth, wash them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain ole with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. ole Walter, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of hrist forever. May God, who has received you by baptism into his hurch, pour upon you the riches of his grace, that within the company of God s people you may daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit, and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory. ole, let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify God in heaven. 11
ole has always been a child of God and now through baptism God affirms that his name has been added to the roll of all our ancestors in faith. ole belongs to God, sent to witness for God before all the world. We welcome you into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God s creative and redeeming word to all the world. Offering Music Only in God John Foley Xitlaly Serrato, mezzo-soprano (lease remain seated) Offering Response We all are one in mission; we all are one in call, our varied gifts united by hrist, the Lord of all. 8 The Lord s rayer Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 14 Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. The Lord s Supper As we listen for your word that calls us to follow, we speak of that mystery we call faith hrist has died. hrist is risen. hrist will come again. ommunion Music You Have ome to the Lakeshore arr. 9 Sending I Love to Tell the Story 1 I love to tell the story of unseen things above, of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love. I love to tell the story, because I know it s true; it satisfies my longings as nothing else would do. Refrain I love to tell the story; I ll sing this theme in glory and tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love. 2 I love to tell the story: how pleasant to repeat what seems, each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet! I love to tell the story, for some have never heard the message of salvation from God s own holy word. Refrain 3 I love to tell the story, for those who know it best seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest. And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song, I ll sing the old, old story that I have loved so long. Refrain Text: Katherine Hankey, Sending Forth the eople of God Holy Trinity stands as a testimony to the spirit-filled, dedicated members, guided by God s hand. God can do big things through each of us. From Matthew 17:20: For truly I tell you, if you have the faith of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, move from here to there, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
