(lease be seated) Welcome and Announcements Invocation We gather for worship in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. all to Worship Jesus comes along side us, calls us by name: and says follow me. A simple call. A hard call. Because following requires leaving. It s hard to leave our nets and walk away from the lake. But we have come this far, to this place, where we can listen and be transformed. 2 3

3 onfession and Forgiveness We confess together. Forgive us if you have called us to use our gifts to serve you, and we have not heard, or have been unwilling to respond. You met hilip and Nathanael on the road and said Follow me - and they did. We confess that we do not expect to meet you on the familiar roads we travel and so we fail to discern your presence or your call in our lives. In front of us, behind us, to our right, to our left: God is there! In our past, beside us today, waiting in the future: God is there! in the shadows, in the light: God is there! We are loved, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. the captives will be freed and the blind will see, when the hungry will be fed and the naked clothed. In other words, when all of creation will be transformed into a new heaven and a new earth. The heart of transformation is to join in God s mission of creating new life, redeeming and restoring what is broken, and making all things new in partnership with the church. It is to become open to the power, the promise and the possibilities of God s vision for the church. It is a communal process inspiring hopes, supporting hopes, and giving back to the church the capacity for dreaming. Handel Our Renewal Begins Next Week As we see with the eyes of faith, we are able to know the unknowable, to think the unthinkable, and to experience the not yet. We are given the ability to imagine to visualize God s dream for humanity: a time when the lion and the lamb will lie down together, when swords will be pounded into ploughshares, when war will be no more, when 4 5

I rejoiced the day you were baptized to see your life unfold. I was there when you were but a child, with a faith to suit you well; in a blaze of light you wandered off to find where demons dwell. 2 When you heard the wonder of the Word I was there to cheer you on; you were raised to praise the living Lord, to whom you now belong. If you find someone to share your time and you join your hearts as one, I ll be there to make your verses rhyme from dusk till rising sun. 3 In the middle ages of your life, not too old, no longer young, I ll be there to guide you through the night, complete what I ve begun. When the evening gently closes in and you shut your weary eyes, I ll be there as I have always been, with just one more surprise. 6 7

(lease be seated) Baptism of Jakob Robert Howarter (We rejoice in the baptism of Jakob, infant son of Kristen (Sargent) & Ryan Howarter. Jakob was born June 14, His godparents are Kasey Howarter, Skyleigh Howarter, and Trevor Vinz.) We have gathered as God s community around the waters of new life. The word of God comes to us through the prophet Ezekiel: I will take you from the nations, and gather you from all the countries, and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean. I will give you a new heart. I will put my spirit within you. You shall live in the land that I gave to your ancestors; and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. eople of God, do you promise to support Jakob and pray for him in his new life in hrist? We do. rofession of Faith I ask you to profess your faith in God, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? 6 Epiphany reed We confess our faith. I believe in God, the creator of the universe, who spoke, Let there be light! and there was light, setting in motion all of creation and blessing it to this day. 10 I believe in Jesus hrist, the light of the world That shines in the darkness. The darkness cannot overcome it. He embodied humanity in the image of God. In kindness, truthfulness, humility and devotion, He suffered for the greater good. He was and is the Son of God. He died on the cross for us, God s saving grace! I believe in the Holy Spirit, The guiding light of God in our world. Through his spirit, God penetrates and reveals The darkness of human sin, helps people grow and become the people they are meant to be. I believe in the power of transformation, Through God s spirit and light, Here in this world and in the world to come. Blessed are you, holy God. You are the creator of the waters of the earth. You are the river of life. Glory to you for oceans, for rivers and creeks. Honor to you for cloud and rain, for dew and snow. Your waters are below us, around us, above us: Our life is born in you. ome also into this water and into Andrew as he is baptized. reate us all anew so that we may serve this needy world. Jakob, let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify God in heaven. Jakob has always been a child of God and now through baptism God affirms that his name has been added to the roll of all our ancestors in faith. Jakob belongs to God, sent to witness for God before all the world. We welcome you into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God s creative and redeeming word to all the world. God s mission has a church because God s loving purposes on behalf of the whole creation do not just fall from heaven. Instead, God s mission gets carried out through God s active calling, sending, and equipping a body of people to discern, celebrate, and participate in God s mission. And that body of people is the congregation. Where we have been will help us know where we are going in the future. The congregation is invited to bring an appetizer to share for the Fellowship Hour on Sunday, January 21 st. We will begin a Bible Study in Lent as part of the renewal process. If you would like to be a Bible Study leader, please sign up on the glass table in the back of the sanctuary. Bible studies can be held in your home, a restaurant or bar, at church, or wherever you want to hold it.
