Holy Trinity Lutheran hurch A ommunity Following in the Footsteps of hrist 357 Division Street Elgin, IL hone: Radio Broadcast on WRMN 1410AM on Sunday at 9:30am Website: lease silence your cell phone. Sixth Sunday of Easter May 6 th, :30am Gathering Gathering Music Sonata Fugata Francesco Durante (lease stand as you are able) Voices Raised to You 1 Voices raised to you we offer; tune them, God, for songs of praise. Hearts and hands we bring in tribute for your gifts through all our days. Triune God, to you we sing! 2 All creation joins to praise you; earth and sky your works display. Art and music, gifts you lend us, we return to you today. God, creator, source of life! Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am among them. Matthew 18:20
3 hrist, the song of love incarnate, touching earth with heaven s grace, for your living, suff ring, dying, for your rising, hear our praise! hrist, redeemer, Lord of life! 4 Spirit, flaming through creation, kindle faith within each heart. Lift our voices high in chorus; through our hands your love impart. Spirit, helper, breath of life! 5 How can any praise we offer measure all the thanks we owe? Take our hearts and hands and voices gifts of love we can bestow. Triune God, to you we sing! Text: Herman G. Stuempfle Jr., b Text 1997 GIA ublications Inc S. Mason Ave., hicago, IL All rights reserved. Used by permission. 2 (lease be seated) Invocation We gather for worship in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen all to Worship We gather to worship the One who crafted creation out of chaos. Our cries of joy join the anthems of the universe. We gather to lift our praise to the God who gives us voice. We bring the songs which have echoed in our hearts all week long. We gather as the children of God, our joy unbroken in God s love. Young and old, tone deaf and perfect-pitched, lift the new songs of faith. rayer We pray together. You raise your hand and gently begin the concerto of creation: birds carry the melody while stars keep the beat; mountains dance in merriment and little children clap their hands with joy. 3
onfession We confess together. Forgive us for what we have done and what we have left undone. Forgive us for not loving our neighbors as ourselves. Forgiveness hrist came to be with us, among us, and for us. Hear the good news of the Gospel: in Jesus hrist, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Leaning On the Everlasting Arms Sandra Eithun Voices of Bronze Welcome astor Jeff Mikyska 4 our new songs are lifted to you. The old, old song is made new in our hearts: hrist is Risen! Sing Alleluia! Amen Word Reading: 1 John 5:1-6 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the hrist has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4 for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. 5 Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus hrist, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. They ll Know We Are hristians eter Scholtes, arr. by Michael E. Akers Voices of Bronze salm 98 L 1 Sing a new song to the Lord, who has done marvelous things, whose right hand and holy arm have won the victory. 2 O Lord, you have made known your victory, you have revealed your righteousness in the sight of the nations. L 3 You remember your steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. 4 Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands; lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. L 5 Sing to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the voice of song. 5
L L 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn shout with joy before the king, the Lord. 7 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it, the world and those who dwell therein. 8 Let the rivers clap their hands, and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord, who comes to judge the earth. 9 The Lord will judge the world with righteousness and the peoples with equity. (lease stand as you are able) Gospel Acclamation 1 When in our music God is glorified, and adoration leaves no room for pride, it is as though the whole creation cried: Alleluia! 2 How oft, in making music, we have found a new dimension in the world of sound, as worship moved us to a more profound Alleluia! 3 So has the church, in liturgy and song, in faith and love, through centuries of wrong, borne witness to the truth in ev ry tongue: Alleluia! Text: Fred ratt Green, Text 1972 Hope ublishing ompany, arol Stream, IL All rights reserved. Used by permission. 6 Gospel: John 15:9-17 The Holy Gospel according to Saint John, the fifteenth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said: 9 As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and abide in his love. 11 I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. 12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17 I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. 7
(lease be seated) Sermon astor Jeffrey G. Mikyska (lease remain seated) Triumphant Journey ynthia Dobrinski Voices of Bronze Triumphant Journey is the story of persevering hope and faith. The main theme marches along and depicts a person s walk through life. Then the main theme is altered and in a minor key to picture the difficulties of life. Then a new theme symbolizes the help from friends, family and God. 8 The Gospel of the Lord. raise to you, O hrist. Baptism of Noah Robert Murray (We rejoice in the baptism of Noah, son of Quinn (Melchi) & hristopher Murray. Noah was born on January 11 th, His godparents are age & Matt Streb and Meghan & Dean Hazen.) We have gathered as God s community around the waters of new life. The word of God comes to us through the prophet Ezekiel: I will take you from the nations, and gather you from all the countries, and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean. I will give you a new heart. I will put my spirit within you. You shall live in the land that I gave to your ancestors; and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. Quinn and hris, as we gather in this community we come together to praise God in worship, song and prayer, delight in the diversity of all of God s children, support one another, gather to grow through God s grace, and to reach out and serve. Will you encourage these signs of the Kingdom in Noah s life? If so, please respond, We will. age, Matt, Meghan and Dean, you have been chosen as godparents for Noah and are making a significant commitment to reflect the love of God in his life. I ask you, will you pray for him, love him, encourage his spiritual growth and continue to do all you can do so that he may grow in faith in God? If so, please respond, I will with God s help. eople of God, do you promise to support Noah and pray for him in his new life in hrist? We do. Noah Robert, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen Sustain Noah with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen Noah Robert, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of hrist forever. Amen 9
Noah, let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify God in heaven. Noah belongs to God, sent to witness for God before all the world. We welcome you into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God s creative and redeeming Word to all the world. Love, love, love! That s what it s all about! ause God loves us, we love each other, mother, father, sister, brother. Ev rybody sing and shout, cause that s what it s all about! It s about love, love, love! It s about love, love, love! Text: Lois Brokering and Herbert F. Brokering 1970 Augsburg ublishing House, admin. Meal The Words of Institution On the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, broke it, and gave thanks; and gave it to his disciples saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. The Lord s Supper As we believe what we may not understand, we trust that mystery we call faith: hrist has died. hrist is risen. hrist will come again. The Lord s rayer Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen 12 13
