1 Volume 68 No.1 September 2016 My Brother Knights, Columbiettes and Squires: A few weeks ago I attended Mass at the Church of Saint Aidan in Williston Park. The reading of the gospel was the parable told by Jesus of the Good Samaritan that is now familiar to most Catholics. The homily was given by Father Damian and he narrated a story about parishioners who were rushing to Mass in Port Washington and ignored the needs of a bicyclist that was just involved in a traffic accident. The obvious injuries of the biker were either dismissed by passersby who had a priority of not arriving late to Mass or were presumed to have been taken care of by somebody else who previously notified the medical authorities. As I was hearing this homily I thought to myself that maybe Father Damian was getting too old or was just tired of continuously explaining this simple parable throughout the years. It seemed to me that he lazily put together his homily at the last minute to present at this 7:30 a.m. morning Mass. Shortly after Mass I drove up Willis Avenue to the Food Emporium store to buy some groceries. Being that it was an early Sunday morning, the parking lot was empty. I decided to take advantage and park close to the store s entrance but an elderly woman was slowly walking by in front of me. I was about to honk my car horn to rush her along when I suddenly remembered Father Damian s words about priorities. I was about to disrupt a stranger without concern for her needs solely because I wanted a little convenience for myself. I realized that as we go through life, each of us has many opportunities to decide what our priorities are. We can either choose to selfishly pursue our own needs or selflessly fulfill Jesus desire that each of us should strive to be a Good Samaritan. On the 4th of July, members of Corpus Christi Council marched in the Williston Park Independence Day Parade that was hosted by the Williston Park Fire Department. Our council s participation enhanced my pride in being a member of Corpus Christi Council. Long-time council members and new members showed up. Past Grand Knights and newly elected officers carried the council s banner and the American flag. Even the Squires and the Columbiettes were represented along with us. No other Grand Knight can request more than what transpired that morning. Our membership came out fully engaged for our council, our community, and our country. Three stalwarts of Corpus Christi Council will host (2) fundraisers and a brunch in the coming months. It starts with the Octoberfest Dinner and Dance on September 24th, followed by the Annual Italian Night Dance honoring Ed and Markey Pappalardo on October 8 th, and topping off the month Past Grand Knights Brunch honoring SK Jim Corrigan and SK Paul Kelly. Each event is worthy of your support. These events follow the successful fundraising template pioneered by the golf outing. Tickets to the first (2) events include a nice dinner, open bar, dancing and the opportunity to try your luck in a string of raffles. As we start this fraternal year, I implore every member to not hesitate in apprising myself or any other officer of any advice or suggestions that you may have. Vivat Jesus, Grand Knight Peter Zayas,

4 Page 4 CLARION September 2016 the angel: Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. (Matt 2:13) He protected the Child and His Mother and thus we refer to him as the Guardian of the Holy Family. Human fathers must not content themselves with only one kind of protection, that is, a protection from physical harm. They must also be guardians against moral harm for their children. And that guardianship starts of course with presence. Fathers who are present to their children and remain involved with them are not just helping their own children; they are helping all of us. Fatherhood is an exercise of social responsibility. Good fathers help to produce good citizens. A birth certificate can tell us paternity; a life of responsible living can tell us who your father is. Fatherhood is an active engagement with children for the long-term project of building strong families and a stronger society. When and where the family is weak, it is somehow connected to a breakdown in fatherhood. On Father s Day this year, we commend all fathers to their patron, Saint Joseph. The loyalty, perseverance and fidelity of the foster father of the Lord are all qualities we need now in our culture. These virtues do not appear magically on the social landscape. They are attained because we petition for them and we work at maintaining these constitutive parts of character. Msgr. Bob Batule, Council Chaplain Chaplain s Report: The following is a reflection on fatherhood, written some months ago when we observed Father s Day. Since fathers never stop being fathers, I thought I would share it with you now although it appeared first in the bulletin of Corpus Christi Church. Enjoy! Occasionally, we hear of stories involving mothers who abandon their children. Many of these incidents are about new mothers who leave their infants on the doorsteps of strangers or outside police precincts of maybe even the emergency room of a hospital. And every once in a while, we learn of a case in which a mother walks out on her children when they are in school or perhaps even able to fend for themselves as young adults. These situations always strike as unusual because a mother s instinct is to remain with her children and take care of them. The maternal instinct is very potent and it really goes to how human beings are hardwired by nature. When we hear of stories about fathers abandoning their children, we are usually not as troubled. We don t approve of it of course, but we are not as disaffected as when mothers leave their children. But we ought to be, I say. Fatherlessness is a big problem across the social landscape. Studies indicate that it is a factor in crime, poverty and a myriad of other social problems affecting family stability and functionality at different levels. One researcher, Dr. Paul Vitz, a former New York University professor, holds the view that fatherlessness is related to disbelief. He wrote a volume once in which he examined the lives of major historical figures who claimed to be atheists. A very high proportion of these disbelieving persons he looked at never knew their fathers or had very poor relationships with them. We address God as Our Father when we pray, and that by the way should not be considered arbitrary. It comes from God Himself, Jesus. Saint Luke records that the disciples asked Jesus to be taught how to pray. On this occasion, Jesus says, When you pray, say: Father (Lk 11:2). The Fatherhood of God has been revealed to us as a true attribute of the One for Whom the whole human family is named. (cf. Eph 3:15) Human fatherhood takes its cues from divine fatherhood. Fatherhood is not just about giving life then. It s about taking care of life once it has been given. Saint Joseph knew this well. When Herod was searching for the Child to destroy Him (cf. Matt 2:13), Joseph followed the instructions given him by The Right Corner: I happened to notice the Nathan s hot dog eating contest on TV on the Fourth of July and was taken back by the enormous crowd watching and cheering on the participants gauging themselves with hot dogs. It s 2016 and we re still acting like barbarians. Over 25,000 people die every day of starvation on this planet. And in the United States of America, we celebrate our Independence Day by watching people shove hot dogs down their throats as if it s an Olympic event. Is this how civilized people behave? Not only is this extremely disrespectful to the starving and the hungry, and there are millions of hungry people in the United States, but it also shows how we have lost respect for our bodies, for food, and for this Earth that provides our food. The purpose of food is to nourish our bodies. Food is not for competing or recreation. Our obesity problem is due, in large part, to this disturbing attitude we have developed toward food. We grow enough food for 10 billion people. Continued on page 5

Around the Council: July 4 th Independence Day Parade: On July 4, 1776, we declared our independence from England and every year since Americans celebrate that freedom and independence with fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual barbecues, picnics and family gatherings. Although early predictions of rain failed to materialize the parade went off without a hitch. The Knights had a strong contingent of Brother Knights, Catholic War Veterans, Columbiettes and Squires. In the lead was our Grand Knight Peter Zayas, John Mallon, Tom Kelly, PGK, Kevin Keenan, Brian O'Donnell, Mike Beatty, Charlie Ribando, Frank Beyrodt, Jim Agnew, Timmy Clarkin, Bill Gyves, John Gordon, Lou LiBrandi, Margaret Lunden and Barbara Mallon from the Columbiettes and Matt Kelly. Clarion Editor, PGK Ken Lyons and a member of his staff Bernadette Ferguson took pictures of the Belmont Trip: On Saturday, July 9, 2016 In the calm days before before the K of C Golf Outing I was looking for something to do. Something thrilling and challenging? Interactive and filled with suspense? Affordable and friendly for the whole family? Ah, Belmont racetrack. A chance to mingle with the brother knights and friends, sip a glass or two of diet coke and enjoy the thrill of placing a bet on a horse with a bizarre name. Of course, that's if you know how to place a bet. Putting the fact that I don t know one iota about horse racing to the back of my mind. Nor, does it seem, I was not the only newcomer to the ignorant circuit. A day out for a flutter on the current horses is all the rage. Soaking up with excitement before the race the horses will be guided around the parade. Joining my several brother knights, their families and friends we embarked on spending a day at the local horse race track. Horse racing is one of the oldest and most respected sports in the world and also one of the most popular forms of gambling. It is also a classy experience that can be enjoyed by the whole family, even small children. Just watching the races themselves was a thrill rivaling many other sports, such as Baseball or Football. Many people enjoyed their time at the races, even those who didn t place a single bet. We had great weather and a great buffet. In fact the experience of horse racing was so enjoyable and family friendly that simply thanking Danny Donovan, Nick Passarella and Jude Ohrtman for all their hard work seems insufficient.

6 Page 6 CLARION September 2016 Golf Champion Council s Annual Baseball Game: On Saturday night July 23, seventeen hearty souls traveled to Brooklyn to witness the Brooklyn Cyclones play Aberdeen Ironbirds. Despite a very hot and humid night everybody seem to enjoy Brooklyn s celebratory win the (7-0). In keeping with a star wars theme everyone attending the game received a glowing lime green hat. We all left the game very happy after the spectacular fireworks display. When a player steps up to the plate, he gets into position to hit the ball. To swing the bat, a player will stand on home plate, raise his bat, and wait for the pitcher to throw him the ball. Hopefully, he ll score a point by hitting a home run, or at least make it to first base. But you don t have to be a baseball player to step up to the plate in the Council. Whenever you take on a responsibility or meet a challenge, you re stepping up to the plate. This is something Lou Librandi has accomplished as the baseball outing chairman over the past number of years. Success lies not in the result, but in the effort. Supreme News: The Knights of Columbus set a new all-time record last year for charitable donations and service hours with $175,079,192 in donations and more than 73.4 million hours of service. We are very proud of these Fraternal Survey numbers, Supreme Knight Anderson said. These are a clear indication that we are keeping faith with Father McGivney s principle of charity and also of unity, not only among ourselves, but with those in need. This is what we call a charity that evangelizes. This is what makes Knights of Columbus different. Supreme Knight Anderson went on to say that these records of giving perfectly illustrate the point made by Father Tomasz Kraj, Poland Associate State Chaplain and Theologian in Residence at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine, in his homily during the Mass that preceded the closing session. Father Kraj said that the world needs more men who pay witness through their actions to what it means to be a Catholic. We are answering Pope Francis call to go to the peripheries, the supreme knight said. We can reach half way around the globe to help those in need and we can reach to our neighbor next door. And we do that every day. That makes us witnesses to the faith. Carl Anderson Supreme Knight Membership: I want to take a different approach to membership. First let us congratulate all of our new officers. Serving as a council officer is both a privilege and honor bestowed upon you by your brother knights. In sports, some teams win simply because they have the best players. However, other teams with equally good players regularly finish far from the top, and some teams with only average players nonetheless become champions. Part of the secret is teamwork: no matter how good the individual players are, if they don't operate as a unit, they won't win as many games. What's true in sports can be true in council work as well. Successful council leaders often have good teams behind them. In many situations, teams can accomplish what individuals can't. Remember all of the members of our council are part of your team, and it is the council officers responsibility to guide members toward reaching the council s goals. Every member has his important role to fill, and by working together, our council will be able to meet its full potential and serve a vital role in your community. Like most awareness-raising campaigns, Life Insurance Awareness Month was created because there is an overwhelming lack of understanding among the general American public of life insurance, its uses, its benefits, and its variations. Each year, LIMRA puts out their consumer survey results and, unfortunately, the results they report continue to be less than encouraging. Many people rely on life insurance to protect their family s financial security. The major reasons they stated for owning life insurance include covering burial and other final expenses, helping to replace lost income and helping to pay off the mortgage. However, almost one-third of Americans know they need more life insurance. Sixty-five percent of the public say they won t buy life insurance because they believe it s too expensive. Two-thirds of those surveyed worry about having enough money for retirement. When asked why, half say they are concerned about the overall economy while fortyfour Christians, however, know that no amount of human wisdom or effort can create peace or sustain it, unless the Lord "builds the house." Whatever else we do, we must turn to the Prince of Peace, and we must find refuge in Jesus, if we truly desire to live in peace with God and with our neighbor. When justice and truth are violated, war often results. Principles, home and land must be protected and preserved. One must right what has been wrong. Such decisions are difficult and sometimes unpopular. Nonetheless, true peace can only be achieved if our intentions are good and noble and the means taken appropriate. Only then can we ask God's blessings upon efforts to achieve peace through force. At a time of terrorism and in its aftermath, a new seriousness of purpose tends to emerge in our Seminarians: Seminary is about Jesus So you believe the Lord is leading you towards seminary life. Can we both just take a moment to laugh at God s sense of humor? But, honestly, we both know that you do NOT know the first thing about seminary. You don t know how to choose a seminary, what classes are involved, how this will affect your life and family you don t even fully know why you are going! So before you reach for a resource, Google different schools, or even have a conversation with one of your mentors, I want to tell you one simple, central thing that should serve as your starting point in this process. Nothing could be simpler and nothing will be easier to lose sight of even before you set foot on a campus. The world of academia plus your sinful, prideful heart is a recipe for pursuing anything but Christ! This whole journey from beginning to end must be about Jesus if there is to be any real purpose in you pursuing it. This cannot be about you! That will lead to very toxic places, not only for yourself, but for everyone else around you. Set your sights on Jesus right would be 43 years old right now, in the prime time of their lives? Pro Life Corner: Unborn Lives Matter: Whenever I set pen to paper, I ask myself: What s the story you d like to read on this topic? Then I try to write that story Only in the story I d like to read, there s more to say. All lives matter even the unborn ones. So, let me write that story, not because it hasn t been written before, but because it can t be written often enough. We live in a culture in which the short journey from the womb to the delivery room is all that separates life that doesn t matter from life that does matter. Isn t that madness? The common thread is my conviction that unborn lives matter. God created us in His image and we are, therefore, different in essence from anything and everything else in the universe. We have intrinsic worth. Our value is not earned by virtue or maintained by our capacity to make a valuable contribution to society. It is invested in us by the mere fact of our existence. We yearn for knowledge, wisdom for purpose and for life. All unborn lives matter because all human life bears God s indelible mark. Vocations: What exactly is a vocation? A vocation is a call from God to do something specifically for God and for His kingdom. The primary vocation of every person is to be holy! It is the divine calling to love and serve God, to obey His commandments, and to cooperate with Christ in the work of redemption by loving and serving others. Everyone is called to live the vocation of holiness, but everyone lives it in a special and unique way according to the plan of God. Many people are called to the vocation of marriage, while others may be called to the vocation of priesthood, to the religious life as a sister or brother. Equally Christ calls some to the commitment of single life. Remember: It is normal to desire marriage and family. Just because you have this desire does not exclude the possibility that you have a vocation to the priesthood or religious service. You must pray every single day, asking God to reveal His plan for you. Do not ask yourself, What do I want to do? Continued from page 13

Rather, you should be thinking and asking: Jesus, what do You want me to do? And listen to the answer! Listen with your heart, not just your head! If you do not follow the vocation for which God made you, you can attain a certain degree of happiness in this world and still attain eternal salvation. However you can never be as happy as you might have been, had you followed your proper vocation. This is why it is so important that you discern correctly. The discernment of your vocation is likely to be the most important decision you will make in your entire life! Of course, there are trials and tribulations in every vocation. A vocation to the priesthood does not take away all suffering. While we might sin and fall short of what God desires for us, but there is great joy in laying down one s life for Jesus. God still calls us to faithfully live our vocations in the hope that we will be with God in heaven someday. A man must pray a great deal, listening with both heart and soul to know what God wants him to do. The life of a priest is a very rewarding life, both in this world and in the next. The media often gives an incorrect impression of priests; that they are largely unhappy, frustrated and angry. This is simply not true. "Every life is a vocation," Pope John Paul II said. And so it is a unique, personal vocation. world. There is one irreplaceable puzzle piece missing Marguerite. For me, Marguerite s death six years ago, late on Sunday afternoon, August 15, 2010 left a gaping hole at the core of my life puzzle, blurring the edges of my emotional landscape. For it was on the day I lost the heart piece of my puzzle. For some, that piece is central and ornate, for others it is complex or conflictual, but each of these relationships are character forming. In my mind I have debated the often cited notion that time heals all wounds. It was nearly impossible for me to imagine a time when her pain would ever be bearable. There was before and now there is after. The passing of Marguerite has turned my heart inside out, and my life upside down. Through life s joys and disappointments, the passing of some of my closest friends, many council challenges, there was always Marguerite, laughing and crying with me, or simply just being there. When Marguerite started to falter, as the cancer took greater hold, the focus needed to shift, the realization that some of the roles need to change. For me, August 15, 2010 will never again be just another day, and this year marks the six anniversary without my best friend. As I recall those precious moments, the little puzzle images that I have tried so hard to keep in focus, fade in and out. I gaze at my photos and close my eyes and imagine her still standing there. There will be more colorful puzzle pieces to add to my landscape and I now appreciate and cherish Marguerite even more, in her profound absence. I wish she were here so that I could share with her the feeling s that I am now experiencing. As I pause to reflect on the timetable of my life I realize I could never have imagine my life without her. With her there was always something to do, she was always up for a challenge and with her I felt we could conquer the world together. Since that day all I've been doing is remembering all the things we have done together from the day we met, to our last goodbye. Every day when I think of Marguerite, I can't help the tears from falling of my eyes. Goodbyes are not forever. Goodbyes are not the end. They simply mean I ll miss you. Until we meet again! Kenny Marguerite 2016: The pain passes but the beauty remains. Pierre August Renoir I have always believed our lives were like inimitable jigsaw puzzles: our family, friends, brother knights and even those who swiftly flit in and out of our story shape and color this collage of our life puzzle. When someone leaves they take their version of your shared memories and experiences with them. We are always recalling our selective version of our lives. We sometimes choose to actively or subconsciously alter or forget some occurrences; some are too painful, other moments embarrassing, or we simply forget. Therefore I often believe we are our truest versions when we are open to viewing ourselves through the eyes of others as well. Their views can be tainted by their personal templates, but it all provides perspective. I have sometimes thought what life would be like if we could glue the back of that jigsaw together and keep it intact forever, and then I shudder, aware of
