Volume 65 No. 8 April 2012 My Brother Knights: As Easter Sunday approaches I have a few more comments I wish to share with you about the Lenten season which is drawing to a close. We all know and read how Adam was expelled from the earthly paradise, the symbol of communion with God... Now, in order to return to that communion and thus to eternal life we must pass through the desert, the test of faith. Not alone but with Jesus who proceeds us and who has already conquered in the fight against the spirit of evil. This is the meaning of Lent, the liturgical time that, each year, invites us to renew our decision to follow Christ on the path of humility in order to participate in His victory over sin and death". Hopefully we chose to enter the desert, in Jesus. We welcomed Lent by embracing its way of voluntary sacrifice, of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Lent is a path to Freedom. Lent may be about identifying with Christ s suffering and resistance to temptations as He wandered through the wilderness at the beginning of His ministry. While that s commendable, what good is it if we identify with Christ s suffering without understanding that it was He who was identifying with the suffering of the world so He could better serve it? In other words, that particular suffering did not end after 40 days. Therefore, if any Lenten discipline is designed to help us identify with Christ, it has to be ongoing, not short-term. When I think about Lent I think about making myself into a better person. That could be a good start, but let me say from personal experience that it takes more than 40 days to turn one s life around. If nasty habits permeate our lives, it ll take more than 40 days to get rid of them. Lent can be whatever we make of it. We can let distractions rule it or we can acknowledge that Lent is an opportunity to be sensitive to the struggles of others, to acknowledge that we can begin improving our own life, and / or to develop a longterm spiritual discipline that sustains us during Lent as well as the other 325 days of the year. As I look back on my younger days, I had a friend who was a priest and I recall every time we began the season Lent. He would say, "I am looking forward to Lent." The comment would perplex me greatly and I would dismiss the comment from my friend as some sort of "weird piety." Now, decades later, I find myself joined with my old friend, seeing the wisdom of his well formed piety. Now that Lent is coming to an end. I am excited upon receiving the invitation and working my way to the path to Freedom. God does not need Lent, we do. The Knight of the Year Award and brunch is April 29; at 1:00 PM. Prior to the Brunch the Council will assemble at the 11:30 Mass at Corpus Christi Church to fulfill its Easter duty as a Council. Best wishes for a Blessed Easter to all my Brother Knights and their families. Fraternally Yours, John Macejks, Grand Knight

Page 4 CLARION April 2012 AROUND THE COUNCIL: Chaplain Easter Message: On Easter Sunday, when we attend mass, the gospel we hear includes these few words: [H]e saw and believed. (Jn 20:8) They are used of the apostle John and they refer to what he did at the empty tomb on the first Easter Sunday. Why is it that this apostle believed right away? After all, the evangelists routinely depict the apostles as slow to catch on to things concerning the One Who called them to His side for the public ministry. Why is John different from the rest? John is the beloved apostle, described in just this way twice in the Fourth Gospel. (cf. Jn 19:26 and Jn 20:2) Love is not blind of course; it sees. It sees what others cannot bear to believe. Usually, what we cannot bear to believe is tragedy. But on the first Easter Sunday, the empty tomb is not bad news; it is the most joyous news of all. Jesus is risen. Alleluia! Love is a fruit always in season because the Risen Lord freshens the springtime of our lives by fulfilling His promise: The Son of man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death he will rise. (Mk 9:31) The apostle John could accept the truth of the Resurrection so readily, so presciently because he was the only apostle at the foot of the Cross on Good Friday. Faith belongs to those who suffer with Him so as to be glorified with Him. (cf. Rom 8:17) As Knights of Columbus, we continue the witness John the apostle gave long ago. We see and believe. What makes this possible is not our denial of the tragic in life, but the solidarity we have with those who suffer. Not anything, says Saint Paul in his Letter to the Romans, can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. (cf. Rom 8:39) Let us wade right in to the new evangelization called for by the Church right now. We know the public square has many daunting challenges for us: the de-sanctification of marriage; the denigration of religious liberty and the cheapening of human life at all its stages, especially unborn life through abortion. With faith born of love, we can rise to meet these challenges and can claim a share in the victory Christ has won over all creation. Happy Easter! Msgr. Bob Batule Council Chaplain MINEOLA ST. PATRICKS DAY PARADE AND REPAST: LET S START WITH HEAD CHEF PETE (THE SAUCE KING) AUGELLO. CHEF HAS FOUND THE SECRET TO MAKING THE BEST CORNED BEEF THIS SIDE OF THE PACIFIC. SO GOOD IN FACT THAT HE ALMOST COULD NOT KEEP UP WITH THE DEMAND, EXCEPT FOR THE HELPFUL SKILLS OF ANDY (SOUS CHEF) BERNSTEIN. (YES HES CATHOLIC). TOGETHER THEY HAD THE KITCHEN TURNING OUT SANDWICHES LIKE A MACHINE. ALSO IN THE MIX WERE OUR TWO TRACK STARS RICH RAAB AND RAY ARDANUY. BOTH HAD TO LOG AT LEAST 5 MILES EACH DELIVERING THOSE SANDWICHES TO WAITING PATRONS. WE THEN HAD OUR LARGEST BROTHER KNIGHT KENNY (SWEDE) LYONS WHO WAS THE CASHIER FOR FOOD, GUINNESS, AND IRISH COFFEES. HE WAS ALSO IN CHARGE OF TESTING THE GUINNESS TO MAKE SURE IT STAYED COLD. NEXT TO SWEDE WAS JUDE (MR. IRISH) OHRTMAN POURING THE GUINNESS PERFECTLY WHILE MAKING SURE SWEDE WASN T OVER TESTING. BEHIND THE BAR WAS A JUMBLE OF JOKERS ROTATING THROUGH THE DAY. THERE WAS NICK (MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY PASSARELLA), DANNY (THE SCHMOOZER) DONAVAN, JOHN (THE EARNER) MUSELLA, LOUIE (LIGHTNING) LIBRANDI, AND DANNY (THE PIPER) MCWEENY. SOMEHOW THEY MANAGED TO GET IT DONE. SPECIAL THANKS TO JIM CORRIGAN AND FRANK IAQUINTO WHO SPENT 5 LONG BORING HOURS SELLING 50/50 CHANCES, NEVER LEAVING THEIR SEATS. BY FAR THE HARDEST WORKER WAS TIMMY (THE TUMBLER) CLARKIN WHO NEVER STOPPED CLEARING TABLES OF EMPTY BOTTLES AND TRASH, REFILLING THE BEER COOLERS AND ANY ODD JOB THAT POPPED UP. IN THE LOUNGE WE HAD JOE (THE MANAGER) CONLON WHO ENTERTAINED ALL THE STRAYS FROM UPSTAIRS. SO LOYAL TO HIS JOB WAS HE THAT HE NEVER LEFT THE BAR EVEN TO EAT. THAT S DEDICATION. Continued on page 5

Page 5 CLARION April 2012 Continued from page 4 IN ALL SERIOUSNESS THESE BROTHERS ALL WORKED TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE A GOAL AND THAT S WHAT MADE THIS DAY SUCESSFUL. LET S HOPE THIS COMARADERIE CONTINUES FOR ALL FUTURE FUNCTIONS THE FOLLOWING BROTHERS ALSO HELPED WHERE AND WHEN THEY WERE NEEDED. TOM DOHERTY GERRY DERBY BRUCE CHESTER TOM KELLY JOHN MACEJKA BILL KESSLER AND THE NEW GUY RAY ARDANUY NICK PASSARELLA, BAR CHAIRMAN St. Patrick s Dance Report: Our annual St. Patrick s Dance was very successful despite the last minute problems experienced by the committee. To say the food was outstanding would be an understatement, it was exceptional. Everyone who attended the dance was treated to a bountiful display of food starting with Shepherd s Pie and a choice of Corn Beef and Cabbage with potatoes and for those who do not like corn beef, chicken was available. Dessert was cookies and coffee. This year s band played a chorus of Irish music and rock and roll; many enjoyed the music and have asked me to book them for next year. Our (3) honorees Msgr. Robert Coyle, Msgr. Robert Batule and Fr. Kevin Dillon (we made Fr. Kevin a Monsignor for the night) and the crowd was entertained by the Fire Department bagpipes. Of course, in every Council affair we have speeches and proclamations and this dance was no exception. State Senator Jack Martins presented each of the priests a proclamation from the New York State Senate. Our Worthy Grand Knight presented the Council s gift to each of the priests and gave a speech. All in all everyone seem to enjoy the evening. And now it s time to thank the people who made this event so special. Special kudos to Tom Doherty and Bobby Redmond for setting up the hall and putting up the (32) county flags. How do you say thank you to a brother knight who also helped in setting up the hall but is mainly responsible for the successful raffle. A special round of applause would not even suffice. So I will simply say thank you Tom Kelly. I would be remiss if I fail to thank Bernadette Ferguson for all the hard work and dedication in making our dance very successful. Ken Lyons, Co-Chairman Knight of the Year Brunch: All Brother Knights are asked to attend the 11:30 A Mass on Sunday, April 29 th, at Corpus Christi Church so the Council can fulfill its Easter obligation. Following Mass we will honor this year's Knight of the Year PGK, Kenny Lyons, with a Brunch in the Main Hall of the Council. Admission is $15 and $8 for children under 12. Please RSVP to me so I can order enough food from our Chef, Brother Pete Augello. Thank you, Tom Kelly Parade Co-Chairmen: Brothers: Here are the responsibilities of the Chairmen A. Serves as the point of contact before during and after each parade B. Gets volunteers to carry flags C. Gets volunteers to carry the Council banner D. Ensure flags, flag holder straps and Council banner and poles get to each parade and make sure they are put away E. March in every parade St Patrick's July 4th Memorial Day and July 4th (Williston Park) If interested call GK John Macejka at Thank you. Tom Kelly St. Patrick day work party Up against all the celebrations of the day, we still managed to get 5 brothers together to get some work done. And did they ever. In 2 hours they managed to get the yard cleaned up, get all the walls in the main hall washed, and boy did they need it. And finally the chandelier in the lobby got a long needed cleaning. Thanks go out to brother Dan Lynch G.K. John Macejka brother Billy Wisniewski, Brother Jude Ohrtman, and Brother Nick Passarella. There is plenty to be done at the council so we are thinking about maybe having a work party once a month. When a decision is made work will go out to the membership. No one is required to make work parties but it is a good way to meet your brother knights and build camaraderie. Nick Passarella Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer.

Ken Lyons, Editor Insurance News: It s Tax Time Ask How a Knights of Columbus Annuity Can Help You Who doesn t want to live a longer, happier life? With advances in medicine and healthcare, the average life expectancy for people in North America is well into the 70s, but reaching age 100 is no longer such a rarity. Of course, increased age brings a new challenge: how do you afford to live out retirement in the style to which you are accustomed? Having a proper plan for financing your retirement is the key. In recent years, the decline in the stock markets has slashed many 401(k) s along with many other retirement funds. Because of these hard times, people are being extra careful with their money, but many don t know where to put what little extra savings they may have. While you are considering options as you move toward retirement, think about one thing guaranteed to help you and your family. As a Knight, you have access to a product that is safe from the swings of the market and is protected from the instability in the banking industry. Our annuity is designed to provide guaranteed longterm security. Consistent and disciplined savings placed into this annuity over time can provide income at retirement that you cannot outlive. With that guarantee comes the fact that no one has ever lost money put in a Knights of Columbus annuity (remember, absolute safety of principal) and consider the value you are getting. Contributions to your Knights of Columbus IRA, Roth IRA or, tax-deferred Flexible Premium Annuity can also have positive tax implications (always check with your tax professional on these matters). Continued on page 7

Page 7 CLARION April 2012 Continued from page 7 I ve said it before, and I ll say it again. Our annuities guarantee your principal, and continue to offer a very competitive interest rate. Take some time to meet with me and I will explain fully the benefits of selecting any of our family planning solutions, whether it s an annuity, or one of our top-rated life or long term care insurance solutions. Daniel S. Garcia Office: Mobile: KofCDanGarcia Fr. Michael J. McGivney Earlier in the school year several seminarians at Saint Mary s Seminary and University in Baltimore were reflecting on their own journeys to answering God s call to the priesthood. In recognition of this, the seminarians decided to commission a $6,000 bust of the Venerable Michael McGivney (which the seminarians funded) for the seminary. Father McGivney was a member of the seminary s class of Whether from the mountains of West Virginia or the northern reaches of Maine, Knights of Columbus councils, large and small alike, were a major part of our vocations and an indispensable source of support, said Seminarian Andrew Nelson, who organized the effort. The bust was dedicated in honor of the Knights of Columbus for their unwavering support of the Church, her priests and seminarians. Nassau Chapter News: The Nassau Chapter Charity Ball will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2012 at6-11pm Stewart Thomas Manor/Bethpage.
