Volume 70 No.5/6 Winter Issue 2019 Dear Brother Knights, Columbiettes and Squires Living the Christmas Spirit All Year Long: When someone says the holidays are finally over what comes to your mind? Perhaps you are very relieved right now that Christmas is a mere memory, and you have almost 12 months before you have to worry about it again. However, have you considered that there is a Christmas spirit? Not the Christmas spirit as told by Santa stories or children's books, but the Christmas Spirit from the Word of God? The Christmas Spirit is the character of Christ living out in us all year long. The point of the Christian life is not self-realization, but in knowing Jesus Christ, not allowing anything to take His place in our thinking, our emotions, and the daily experiences of life. The spiritual and mature Christian will never think his circumstances are merely haphazard, neither think of himself as the center of the universe. Rather Christians are to be Christ like in "attitude" and in "form." Whether we do menial activities like raking leaves, or tackle big projects for the church, the mature Christian will see everything as Christ does, even in those times when it seems He has "dumped" on him. Thus, our daily activities as well as those bad circumstances such as stress, setbacks, failures, and such, are a means of growth and learning and becoming more like Him. We are to see all that there is in life as a journey to further secure the knowledge of Jesus Christ in our lives, even to the point of being recklessly abandoned to Him. The Spirit is there all along, trying to guide us in, like an airport attendant with two flashlights guiding in a jumbo jet. The pilot must keep a careful eye on the person guiding him as well as the controls of the aircraft or else the multi-million dollar plane and the hundreds on board will be in dire jeopardy. We too, must keep watch on the Spirit. We must take the controls and steer our life His way, less we crash, resulting in a consequence to all those around us. It may come small, like a small man compared to the monstrous 747 jet. However, the 747 cannot park, nor can the passengers go on their way without the guidance from two very small flashlights. We have to take the initiative of realizing Jesus Christ in every phase of our daily life. If we don't, a counterfeit will invade in the place of Jesus. The 46 th Annual March for Life in Washington, DC will take place on Friday, January 18 th, The 46 th Pro-Life Mass is Sunday, January 20 th, 2019 at St. Patrick s Cathedral. Anyone interested in attending one or both these events should contact me. February the shortest month of the year is filled with optimism that the oversize squirrel known as the groundhog (Punxsutawney Phil) will forecast an early spring. After a long season and a long series of elimination games we have arrived at the 53 rd Super Bowl Game to be played in Atlanta, GA. On Sunday, February 3 rd, 2019 at 6:14 pm Association will host its annual Super Bowl Party. Ash Wednesday (March 6 th ) is a prelude to Lent, our wake-up call forcing us to face mortality and sinfulness. We have black ashes rubbed into our foreheads. This is one religious day that won t fall into the clutches of retailers. Continued on page 5

Page 5 CLARION Winter Issue 2019 Continued from page 1 On Ash Wednesday we come to church to kneel, to pray and to ask God s forgiveness surrounded by other sinners. My Brother Knights in our ranks we have abundance of talent, experience and leadership skills to keep our Council moving forward. All it takes is for is Brother Knights with the courage to step up to the plate. I want to wish all my Brother Knights, Columbiettes, Squires and their families a very healthy and safe New Year. Fraternally yours, SK John Mallon, Grand Knight Chaplain s W.I. Message: Here we are in another new calendar year. As this is my first column for 2019, let me say for the record Happy New Year! For my message, I would like to emphasize the newness of things in the New Year. I do so because there isn t much of a difference between December 31 st and January 1 st. Most of us did pretty much on January 1 st what we did the day before although it is a different year now. Our lives are filled with a lot of the same. How then is the New Year new? Let me propose that the newness of things begins with our attitudes. It s not that we do different things but that we do the same things in a new way. This is important because if we were always changing things, there wouldn t be much order and unity to our lives. But, if we change attitudinally, we keep the consistency and stability and we can still say that things are different. Our way of approaching old things has been renewed; we ve found a new inspiration, a new motivation, a new vision lest we become complacent and perhaps even stuck in a rut. Consider the Beatitudes of the New Testament. Jesus pronounces His disciples blessed if they assume a new, fresh way of looking at things. In this sense, living in the Kingdom starts with attitudinal change. We become poor in spirit, we become merciful, we become clean of heart, etc. Jesus teaching challenges everything about our lives; however, conversion cannot occur unless there is a shift attitudinally. It all starts with attitude. In the spirit of the Beatitudes, why not commit to taking on one of them each month? How about appealing to the Holy Spirit for the grace to adopt a new attitude? Attitudes change us inwardly, and that in turn affects our outward conduct. So, when you think new, think attitude first. It s the best way to get a jump on the New Year and change those old ways into good ways. Start now! Don t delay! You won t regret your new life. Msgr. Bob Batule Council Chaplain The Right Corner: I used to make New Year s resolutions. Mostly, they were all the same. I was going to lose weight, start exercising, buy healthier foods, watch my budget more closely, finally finish that book I have been reading for the past decade. You know, the same old life changing assertions that half of the population make. One of my favorite parts of New Years is throwing away the old calendar and getting to start anew. All the hopes, dreams, and fantasies of a new life seem so tangible at New Year s, don t they? Well, have I got news for you. According to a recent survey only a measly 3% of people actually follow through with their big New Year s resolutions. And psychologists believe that this failure to follow through on bold and brilliant New Year s resolutions by 97% of us can actually lead to diminished self-esteem and lack of motivation in the months to come. Does this mean that the remaining 97% of us who threw ideas in the till for positive change are all losers who cannot commit to anything? Absolutely not! One of the reasons I ceased making resolutions is quite simply because I don t believe that there is one specific day so enlightened that you can change your entire world in the blink of an eye. I don t believe that putting all your eggs in the New Year s basket is necessarily the best way to make changes in your life. Truth is, you can blow in the winds of change any day of week, any month of the year, any hour of the day if you so choose. I DO believe that New Year s should be a time of reflection. What was the last year like for me? What are the things I did right? What are the things I did wrong? Where is there room for improvement and positive change? What are some of the things I would like to continue to do? What am I proud of, and what do I wish I could change? Am I living the best life possible, and if not what are three simple changes I could make to head in that direction? To me, New Years is about taking inventory and making a plan. Not just a firm resolution which you are certain to break; that you will never again sink your teeth into a sugary donut, or guzzle down an ice-cold Budweiser on a hot summer day but a plan that you will eat two less donuts per week, and only enjoy one beer every other day. Why set yourself up to fail? The last thing you want to do is to feel like a deflated balloon. Instead, start slowly by asking yourself the questions above. Continued on page 6

Page 6 CLARION Winter Issue 2019 Continued from page 5 Write down your answers and take baby steps toward achieving your goals. The expression Rome wasn t built in a day, rings true when it comes to New Years and nothing in your life should be all or nothing. If it is, chances are you are setting yourself up to feel guilty or bad down the road. So be honest. Now that we are a week past New Years have you stuck to your New Year s resolutions or are you slowly losing your enthusiasm for making changes? Ken Lyons, Editor AROUND THE COUNCIL: Christmas Poinsettia s Report: Once again Jim Corrigan, PGK, Peter Zayas, PGK, Sam Donato, PGK, Ken Lyons, PGK, GK John Mallon, Tim Clarkin, Jude Ohrtman and Dan Albano deserve a round of applause for delivering poinsettia s to the widows of our Council. Many of the widows they visited were extremely happy that we took time to remember them throughout the Christmas season. Ken Lyons, Editor Children s Christmas Party Report: It s all about the kids to begin with. I don t care where the kids come from or what religion they are, it s just to watch them come up and see Santa. Following a tradition set forth many years ago by the Council by adopting struggling poorer families In both St. Aidan s and Corpus Christi Parishes. And inviting them to attend our Children s Christmas Party. This year (2) families from Corpus Christi Parish and (2) families from St. Aidan s Parish were invited to attend the Council s Christmas Party only the families from Corpus Christi attended. The extra presents were donated to the Marine Corps, Toys for Tots. The job of planning the Council s Children s Christmas party can often seem something of an unwelcome and scary prospect. But, there s a power in a group of people who work together toward a shared goal. A properly managed team, boost strengths and brings out the best in each member. Tim Clarkin (Santa) with special help from Marian Redmond and Valerie Passarella with an honorable mention to Bobby Redmond and Chairman Ken Lyons, PGK face the extra challenges of budgeting and planning for an unknown number of children in attendance, attracting volunteers, buying and wrapping presents, supplying food and drinks, providing entertainment, takes special energy and commitment. The Knights of Columbus, like many organizations, depend upon volunteers who have day jobs, family commitments, and other hobbies, unless members are recognized for their achievements, it s easy for them to lose interest. Sometimes, I forget the people who made this party so successful in so many ways. Sometimes, I forget to tell them how much I really appreciated their help in running the Children s Christmas Party. Today is just another day, nothing special going on, so thank you, all of you, Tim, Owen, Stu and Marge just being there for the kids. Ken Lyons, Children s Christmas Party Chairman Member s Christmas Party Report: On December 15 th, our Annual Member s Christmas Party was held in the Columbian Lounge, with many people in attendance. Lou Librandi and Tim Clarkin brought an evening of enjoyment to many of our members and their friends. Given a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the Christmas rush, Brother Knights and their wives, Columbiettes, and friends came together for a festive evening. Chef Peter Augello supplied pass around food and Arditos one (3) foot American and one (3) Italian hero. Light array of Christmas music filled the air as the Jets football game and Islander hockey game had members glued to the TV s. We ran (1) special raffle fundraiser to help Bernadette s family. Once again they set tone for the year by creating another successful Christmas Member s Party. We appreciated their unfailing attention to detail. If someone asked me to describe the ambience of the party in one word, I would say it was vivacious. Thank you Lou, Nancy and Timmy for all your hard work and dedication. Ken Lyons, Editor Pro-Life Mass: On Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019 at 10:15 a.m. Cardinal Timothy Dolan will celebrate the Respect for Life Mass at St. Patrick s Cathedral. The Pro-Life Mass educates and advocates for all life from the unborn to the aged. Fifty billion babies aborted is enough for a hundred thousand lifetimes. Please contact the Grand (516) if you are interested in attending.

Page 7 CLARION Winter Issue 2019 Pro-Life March: The 46th annual March for Life will take place Friday, Jan. 11, 2019 in Washington, D.C., and tens of thousands of pro-life marchers from New York and around the country are planning to make the trip to the nation s capital to call for protection under the law for human life at all stages. The march marks the 46th anniversary of the Supreme Court s Roe v. Wade decision, which made abortion legal throughout the United States. It also is a sign of the strength of the pro-life movement in the United States, and of the growing opposition to abortion and other attacks on life, including euthanasia. And if we can accept that a mother can kill her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? The older I get, time just flies by. I feel like it was summer yesterday and I wouldn t mind some warmer, golfing weather right now. I hope you and your family had a great Now is the time to start planning for 2019 before it too flies by. Hopefully, you ve established a few goals for this year. I ve learned a great tip regarding resolutions. First, write them down. It s not too late if you haven t already done this. Commit your goals to paper and post it someplace you will see it often. Writing down a goal is the first step towards achieving it. It may not make sense at first, but I m sure you have heard stories of the success this simple task can bring. Whether your goal is to exercise more, give more to charity, read more or watch less television, you re more likely to accomplish it if you write it down. Second, resolve to have an expert look at your finances. I recommend that you have a team of experts help you, and I would love to sit with you. Let s schedule time to meet to perform an insurance check-up to evaluate any gaps in your family s life insurance protection. Now is the perfect time to fill those gaps, not later. Continued on page 9

Page 9 CLARION Winter Issue 2019 Continued from page 8 Remember that we don t plan to fail, but sometimes we do fail to plan. Keep in mind that unlike many other products, you don t just need money to obtain life insurance; you also need good health, and no one knows when your health could change. Why should you care about protecting your family with life insurance? The reason is simple and it s the same as Father McGivney s vision and mission for almost 137 years, you will be providing financial protection for Catholic families, your family. You may ask, at what cost? PGK Danny Lynch, PGK Marcel Chaillol, Vilma Doherty, Tommy Hayden, Valerie Passarella, John O Shea, PGK John and Pro-Life Corner: America s own Holocaust: I remember the first time that I learned of the Holocaust, and proceeded to inspect the sobering photographs of that awful series of events. It was unfathomable to me that anybody could commit such an atrocity. My naive mind back then in my youthful days could not conceive of the terrible inhumane ways that human beings could treat other human beings. As a young American Catholic, I was appalled that such an evil force existed in our world. Albeit, it did make me proud of my nation and its military forces for endeavoring to end the diabolical evil of Nazism and bring an end to the Holocaust. Like me, there were many other people around the world that were totally aghast at that disgusting and shameful episode as it was perpetrated by such a depraved society that was wholly deceived by a masterful demon possessed man and his hellish ideology. But, when I think today of the 20th century Holocaust, and consider the millions of victims that befell Adolph Hitler and his demons, I can't help but think about the secret Holocaust that is going on today right here in America. It is known as abortion. It, like the Final Solution of Hitler, is a systematic state-sponsored solution to another problem, "unwanted fetuses, or babies." Instead of Jews, today; our society of pop culture ideology has adopted the notion that self-pleasure and selfglorification is more important than the rights of the unborn. Therefore, they (the unborn) must be eliminated. There are over 1.5 million unborn babies submitted to the ovens of abortion in the United States every year. That statistic reveals that there have been about 50 million unborn put to death in America's concentration camps since 1973, Continued on page 10

Page 10 CLARION Winter Issue 2019 Continued from page 9 Seminarian News: when America became the chief sponsor of its own Holocaust. That is a whole lot of state-sanctioned murders. I shudder over these numbers when I compare this carnage to the Nazi atrocities, because America is engaged in a sin that is just as devious as the Nazi death machine of the 1940's. And then when I consider the fact that America is supposed to be a nation that was founded upon Christian principles and a firm belief in a Creator. God that has endowed each individual with inalienable rights, (such as the right to life) I must conclude that America today is a nation in decline because God should not be mocked, and His judgment will be sure and swift. Just as surely as Hitler and Nazi Germany were judged for their atrocities against Jews, America will be judged for its attacks on the cradle of its unborn. It shouldn't be lost on any reader that the holocaust of abortion came into the American psyche of moral acceptance after the sexual revolution of the 1960's. The younger American generations have been taught by social engineers of the liberal left that the Bible is all wrong about sex, and that free love, free sex, homosexual and lesbian lifestyles are simply expressions that are fair play for them. Express yourself, you only live once...make love, not war, and are the philosophies expressed by these lovers of the self. But never in their vain philosophies do they consider the rights of the ones they wish to do away with! And of course, the Federal government made abortion a legal option for a sex craved nation in 1973 through its infamous Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision, thereby guaranteeing America's lustful unrestrained de-christianized youth to fully explore their free-sex lifestyles, and totally disregard the sanctity of marriage and the value and the gift of children and a family. Alas, the end result of that whole experience has led to bureaucratic state-sponsored same-sex marriages. Perilous times is surely coming for America. Our national sins are just as grievous to the Lord as was Nazi Germany's. And just as surely as God brought about retribution to those who wrought death and persecution to the Jews in the Holocaust, God will more harshly judge America for our own Holocaust because we were a nation that had known better. Ken Lyons, Editor The strong numbers of new men at some U.S. seminaries this year should be seen not as a dramatic fluctuation, but as another data point supporting the emergence of a consistent trend: Seminary attendance numbers in the U.S. seem to be stabilizing after a precipitous fall during the last third of the 20th century. Millennial Seminarians While the relative enrollment boost this year might not indicate a dramatic upswing, it does indicate that the call to the priesthood is still being heard by a new generation. Or, put in more practical terms, seminaries are still seen as a compelling place to be for millennials. In many ways, the factors that have played a role in new seminarians discernment and decisions to enter seminary are the same as they were for most generations that came before them: service to others in the community, the powerful witness of holy priests and other Catholics in their lives, and time devoted to prayer, especially adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. I felt that Christ was calling me to follow him, and I wanted to respond to that call without delay, recalled the 23-year-old from South Bend, Indiana, who left graduate school in speech-language pathology to pursue the priesthood. As with any generation, millennials come with a set of strengths and challenges that shape their seminary experience. T should be noted that making a firm commitment to a vocation is something that can be difficult for young men today. Overexposure to digital media can pose a challenge when it comes to fully entering into the kind of quiet, unmediated prayer with Christ. Today s Seminary are happy to have more men considering a call to the priesthood, they stress that the quantity of candidates will never be as important as the quality. Though the modest increase in enrollment seen by U.S. seminaries this year is unlikely to erase the perceived priest shortage, especially given high rates of retirements from public ministry expected in the next couple decades, there s still reason for hope. Don t panic. Jesus didn t. I know that sounds trite, but he started the Church with only 12. It s not about and has never been about the numbers.... If we remain faithful, vocations to the priesthood will come Ken Lyons, Editor

Page 11 CLARION Winter Issue 2019 Vocations: O God, Father of all Mercies, Provider of a bountiful Harvest, send Your Graces upon those You have called to gather the fruits of Your labor; preserve and strengthen them in their lifelong service of you. Teach all Your faithful to follow their respective paths in life guided by Your Divine Word and Truth. Through the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, all the Angels, and Saints, humbly hear our prayers and grant Your Church's needs, through Christ, our Lord. Amen. substantial and enduring contribution to their parishes, communities and physical and spiritual security of their families. And he saw that by doing so one parish and community at a time, Catholic families could help build a better world. He was a man ahead of his time. Two American Apostles, Bishop Sheen using books, words and the use of modern day communications (radio and TV) to communicate God s message and Fr. McGivney living the words through the Knights of Columbus. I recently came across a quote from St John Chrysostom that fits nicely with this post. Commenting upon the Lord s Prayer, St John says: Christ teaches us to make prayer in common for all our brethren. For He did not say My Father who art in heaven, but Our Father, offering petitions for the common body. So the very use of our and us and we in the Lord s Prayer necessitates a Communion of Believers, the Church, as an essential part of the Christian life. Ken Lyons, Editor Fr. Michael J. McGivney: Arch-Bishop Fulton J. Sheen and Fr. Michael J. McGivney were two American apostles of Jesus: Bishop Sheen influence is felt far beyond the end of his earthly life and reaches far beyond the millions of American radio listeners and television viewers he reached. Bishop Sheen was a preacher, an author and a TV star. His writings and teachings likewise continued to influence Christians and non-christians the world over, largely because Sheen so accurately recognized philosophical and religious trends that increasingly were dominating our culture. Fr. McGivney formed the Knights of Columbus, Catholic laymen bound in a common association gather to advance the welfare of their Church and communities. Some will help families pay off huge medical bills or secure aid for disaster victims. More will organize nutrition programs for disadvantaged children or prayer services for an end to abortion. The Knights of Columbus, are the legacy of Father Michael J. McGivney. Father McGivney dedicated his life to the spiritual and physical welfare of others. But beyond charitable works, Father McGivney wanted each Knight s heart and mind attuned to greater love of God and his Son, both within the Church and within the family. That is his spiritual legacy. Father McGivney did not use the vocabulary of the 21st century, but he espoused the same Gospel values that Catholics affirm today. Father McGivney built a way for laymen to make a Fourth Degree Corner: The Fourth Degree is often known as The Patriotic Degree. The Fourth Degree is frequently regarded as an honorary title with its regalia of berets and swords but should rather be thought of in terms of service to church and country, and the goals of the Fourth Degree may be summarized as the promotion of the ideals of Catholicism and Patriotism side by side. Any Third Degree Knight interested in becoming a Fourth Degree Knight should contact the FS, SK, Nick Pennacchio, PGK or the GK, SK, John Mallon Membership News: Congratulations to SK Charles Vigliotti for his 50 years in service as a Fourth Degree Knight in the Bishop Walter P.
