Chris "Do not be afraid. From now on, you will be catching people." Jesus spoke these words to his disciples after he had sent them back into their fishing boat after a long night of fishing with little success. Jesus sends

2 his disciples back out 'into the deep' and tells them to 'let down their nets.' They do...and they bring in a catch so large it begins to sink the ship! The disciples were blown away and that is when Jesus sought to calm them down and direct their attention to the similar task of 'catching people.' This is a very familiar image among Christians --- especially those with a heart for what we call 'evangelism.' It is not only a familiar image but a much loved image --- one we have even turned into a children's song! Notwithstanding, the image of fishing for people, and even more directly, Jesus' statements about 'catching people,' has always sounded strange to me --- even disturbing. So I find comfort in the words of Jesus, when he begins with the phrase, 'Do not be afraid.' This Sunday I would like for us to consider this central Christian image and see what we might discover from encountering this text once again. I look forward to seeing you then! The whole thing creates a subtle tension within and it s easier to diffuse the tension by simply moving on and ignoring it all OR to really work at Lent to make it happen. None of these help.

5 Perhaps Henri Nouwen can help us help us enter into and discover the gifts that are intended to be received during this season. Nouwen writes, Lent is a time of returning to God...a time of refocusing, of reentering the place of truth, of reclaiming our true identity. It is a time to confess how we keep looking for joy, peace, and satisfaction in the many people and things surrounding us without really finding what we desire. Only God can give us what we want......a time of returning to God. The pace and intensity of life easily moves us away from God and before we are even aware of it, we find ourselves disconnected from our intimacy with God and the sweetness of His Presence. We can also be disconnected from ourselves and as well, others. We need to recollect our scattered parts. We need to return. We want to go home, our soul wails. We long for Him to once again be our soul-satisfaction. We long for joy and peace to reemerge from our core of being. It could be said that Lent is the road --- Jesus is the destination. 7 Announcements Short Men's Meeting --- All HTAC men, please meet in the back room of the ministry center after this Sunday's 10 a.m. service. Fr. Chris wants to discuss plans for Youth Group --- The newly emerging 'youth group' of HTAC is going to be hosting an event from Noon-2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, and Sunday, Feb. 17 (after our 10 a.m. service). On the 10th, we will be watching Avengers: Infinity War, and on the 17th we will be discussing various themes and questions it presents throughout the film. This event is open to all youth in middle or high school --- invite your friends! Parents are welcome to stay as well if you would like. Please RSVP via to Marrty and let him know if you will be bringing others with you. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Pre-Lenten Gatherings --- We will be meeting for two Wednesdays prior to the season of Lent, in preparation for this sacred season. Join us on Wednesday, Feb. 20, and Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 6:30 p.m. at the ministry center to hear from Fr. Chris and Debbie Swanson, as we prepare for our Lenten journey together. We plan to continue meeting on Wednesday nights during Lent to pray and worship together. Stay tuned for more details! Ash Wednesday Service --- We'll hold our annual service to mark the beginning of Lent at 6:30 p.m. on March 6 in the ministry center. The service will include the Imposition of Ashes. Wednesdays During Lent Series --- Join us in the ministry center each Wednesday during Lent, 6:30-8 p.m. Child care provided. Message from Deacon John Zahller --- "I want to thank all of you for your thoughts, prayers, cards, and visits during my rehab and hospital stay. You are all a blessing to me! I am back home now and still getting rehab visits. Thank you all for your prayers and help in getting my house in order. May God continue to bless you and keep you. May He continue to use you to accomplish His holy will. God's peace and blessings to all of you. You are loved and appreciated. God's Peace."
