1 SAINT PAUL S EPISTLE JULY 2016 NEWSLETTER OF SAINT PAUL S EPISCOPAL CHURCH OREGON CITY This is my last article before I leave to become the Canon for Congregational Life and Mission in the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania. Teresa and I will miss you dearly. I hope you know how much we love you. The last five years have been extremely productive and gratifying, and you have been so very supportive to both of us. As we leave, know that you will be in our prayers. God is not finished with St Paul s. This church has a long history of overcoming adversity and rising to the challenges before it. Over the last 5 years we ve grown, we ve added children s and youth ministries, we ve fed the hungry and served those in pain or grief and this good work will continue. I m confident that your wardens and your vestry will help to lead you into a bright future. As we leave, I pray that you will carry hope into the future and that you will truly believe that the best is yet to come. I believe this for you and I can t wait to hear about RECTOR S MESSAGE how God is richly blessing you all. In order for St Paul s to better move into the future, and to enable your new priests to form and develop connections with you all, I will refrain from most contact with you for a little while after I leave. We will do this, even though it will be hard, because we want the church to be as strong as possible and we don t want to interfere in the work of the new person who will be called to the church. You will, though, remain in our prayers and in our hearts always. This is a special church, one that isn t afraid to take a risk for the kingdom of God. Our last Sunday will be July 10 th and we really would love to see you all there that day. I hope you can make it as we celebrate together what God has been doing among us. God is good, and so are you! Much peace, Dan+ ECW MEETING Helen Keller Said, When we do the best we can, we never know what miracles await. Be a part of the miracle awaiting ECW on Saturday, July 9, 2016, 10:15-12:00, meeting in the parish hall. GOING AWAY RECEPTION On Sunday, July 10th, we will be having a reception for Fr. Dan and Teresa after the 10:00 am service. The main dish will be provided and so we are looking for salads, side dishes and desserts. Please contact Carol Barstow, or carolwayne@outlook.com and let her know what you are bringing so we can plan accordingly!

Some of these children are living in poverty and others are in foster care. If you have not already done so, please consider helping again this year by donating funds and/or new school supplies. The box will be in the parish hall until August 8. Last year s project distributed approximately 1400 basic back-to-school backpacks. I am sure the need will be even greater this year. A taxdeductible receipt will be provided. I will also be happy to turn your donation in if you prefer not to mail it. You will still receive a tax-deductible receipt. You can also contact Charles and I if you need to bring them at some other time or need help. We are not doing large furniture this year. 3 Father Dan and Teresa will be leaving us this month, and your Vestry is already looking ahead to what needs to be done to continue the momentum of growth that St. Paul s has enjoyed under Father Dan s leadership. While many of us are somewhat familiar with the process, having gone through it several times in the recent past (2004 and 2011), we have many new members who are not. I will outline the process in this article, and I will use the Epistle in coming months to keep you updated. TRANSITION NEWS St. Paul s. Once candidates (pre-screened by the Bishop) are presented to us, the Search Committee will sort through candidate profiles and begin the interview process. The committee then submits its recommendation for approval by the Vestry. We hope to have the Parish profile completed by mid fall, with the job notice being posted soon thereafter. Interviews could be conducted as early as the beginning of Please keep in mind that St. Paul s is OUR church, and we as a church will get to decide the qualities we want in our next rector. To that end, in the coming months we will be developing a Parish Profile, which will describe our church: its history, culture, people, ministries and the community it serves. The Profile will also include a description of the qualities, gifts, skills and other attributes we are looking for in a rector. In order to develop this profile, the Vestry will establish a Parish Profile Committee, consisting of one Vestry member and 5-7 members of the congregation. One of their tasks will be to develop and implement a survey of all parishioners. There will be a written survey, and in addition, every parishioner will have an opportunity to meet with a committee member and discuss the qualities our next rector should have. While we proceed with the profile process, the Vestry will establish a Search Committee, consisting of the Senior Warden and at least one other Vestry member, along with 6-8 members of the congregation. Once the Profile is completed, it will be used as a recruitment tool by the Diocese as they assist us in the search for a rector that meets the needs of In the meantime, the Vestry is working with the Diocese to work out the details for making sure we have coverage for our services and pastoral needs until such time as we can hire a new rector. There is a lot of work ahead, and this is an opportunity for each of you to help out in a truly meaningful way, whether by actively participating in or assisting one the committees, providing thoughtful responses to our survey, or helping to support and maintain St. Paul s and its vibrant ministries by your efforts and monetary contributions. Your pledges and offerings are more important than ever now to show to prospective applicants that St. Paul s is on solid financial footing. To formally begin the process, we invite you to attend an informational session on Sunday July 17, 2016 at 9am in the Parish Hall. We will discuss the transition process and provide information about how you can become involved. Anyone interested in serving on a committee should attend. There will also be a Vestry meeting that day at 11:30 a.m. in the library, and members of the congregation are welcome to attend. Bob Dorband, Senior Warden page 3 July 2016

4 Greetings from St. Paul s Place! We served 92 meals on Thursday, May 26, our record high! We made chicken casserole with mixed vegetables and Ann s lemon cake. The chicken casserole is pretty good and the lemon cake is very good. Even the mixed vegetables got eaten! We had cooked for 90 and were very fortunate to have enough food. Now we try to cook servings each week so that we will be able to feed anyone who comes for dinner or wants a to go meal. Thank you to all the wonderful helpers at St. Paul s Place who make these Thursday dinners happen: Greeters Judy Brooks, Marsha Hutchison, Rita Mills and Carol Skellenger; Dining Room Staff Anne Baldwin Price, Carol Barstow, Gladys Cordry, Nancy Doherty, John Dornan, Dan Fullerton, Mary Lou Gunis, Al Larson, Tom Mason, Jeri Shaw Osteen, Robin Sulenes and Nancy Abbott and friends and family; and Cooks and Kitchen staff Penny Blodgett, Ted Clayton, Ann Franklin, Charles Leckey, Joe Malecka, and Bob Rose. Nancy Abbott will also help us cook once a month this summer. Thanks too to Linda Lassen, Doc Cleland and Linda Poole of the Wellness Clinic who come every week and Rev. Constance Hammond and the therapists of Healing Touch who come on the fourth Thursday of the month. ST PAUL S PLACE An essential part of the dinner program at St. Paul s Place, and something that few people see, is the job of shopping for the food. Every week Ann Franklin goes to Costco and shops for most of the food that we cook: 18 pounds of beef or chicken, salad or vegetables, fruit, gallons of milk and juice, ice cream or cake mix and more. It takes time and it s hard to push the heavy cart. (This part about Ann is written by Penny.) Ann then has to drive the food to the church, often on Wednesday, and get the food out of her car and into the kitchen at church. She then comes back on Thursday and cooks. Thank you Ann Franklin. You are a wonderful person. Thanks to Charles Leckey too for doing the shopping at Costco when Ann went to the dogs (shows) recently! The Greeters at the dinners give clothing, such as scarves and socks, to people in need. We are very grateful to Patricia Knapp and Doris Greer of St. Paul s for giving lovely scarves that they have crocheted to St. Paul s Place for the greeters to give to guests who need them. Thank you very much. Best wishes to all. Ann Franklin and Penny Blodgett page 4 July 2016
