2 Feast at First Food Stand 34th Anniversary ~ 2018 Final Report ~ Adult Choir Schedule September 2018 Sept. 16th - Rehearsal at 9:15 A.M. in the sanctuary Sept. 23rd - Rehearsal at 9:15 A.M. in the sanctuary Sept. 30th - OFF New members are welcome!! (Grade 9 & older) Why join the church choir? Here are just some of the reasons: - Singing in a choir causes intellectual stimulation. When you make music, you are using both sides of your brain simultaneously. - People involved in music live longer and are healthier. - To quote St. Augustine, To sing is to pray twice! - Be part of a supportive family. - It is a wonderful way to serve your church and your God. - Choir.Is.Fun. If you have any questions you can talk to any current choir member, call Kathy Moorhouse ( ), or just come on the 16th and see what it s all about! Stewardship Update The Mission of the Month for July was Lutheran World Relief, with $ collected. First Lutheran Good Samaritan Fund will be the August mission. Thank you for your continued support of our missions. Great Job everyone! Because of you, we are giving away $15,000 to local, state, national, and world needs. We are down $3850 from last year because of two factors: one - in 2017 we served breakfast for three mornings the end of June; and two this year the weather was hot and wet. There are so many people to thank. First of all, there were 104 different people who volunteered, which included 12 youth. Of those, there were 37 who worked multiple shifts, and 9 people worked 6 or more shifts. We had 18 different people who helped at church in the kitchen - ten of those worked more than one day. Thanks to Jean Conrad for being in charge each morning. The pie bakers were fantastic. Twenty-two people baked 66 pies. Also, thanks to those who made cash contributions, which included Keith & Norma Borcherding (whose donation paid for all the ground beef), Betty Sutton, Craig & Brenda Saunders, and all those who donated through the offering plate. I would like to also give special thanks to Feast at First planning committee consisting of Carolyn & Pat Maloney, Sandy & Harlin Gilje, Deb & Larry Richmond, Dennis & Marsha Wiedenman, and my wife, Vicki. This group of people worked many hours before, during, and after the fair. Again, thanks for a job well done by all. ~ Sandy Estill, Chair Page 2 Lamplighter Chairman, John Zietlow
3 The Church Ladies Group Supports Operation Christmas Child Once again the Church Ladies group thanks you for supporting the Operation Christmas Child / Shoebox / Samaritan's Purse project. Going through your donations is just as good as opening Christmas presents. We cannot imagine the excitement a child must feel as she or he opens a shoebox filled expressly for them. September is a wonderful time to get great buys on school supplies, summer t- shirts, children's undies, etc. The one question is always... is toothpaste allowed? No, it isn't, along with no liquid or no candy of any kind. Example - glue is not allowed, but glue sticks are acceptable. For ideas on what to donate may we suggest a visit to SamaritansPurse.org or simply google Operation Christmas Child. Please watch for a display in the narthex with a sample box filled with supplies and gifts. Cash donations are always needed to cover shipping. At present the cost to ship each box is $9.00. Contact Sandy Swanson with any questions. The Ladies Group will not meet during the month of September. Watch the weekend announcements and the October Lamplighter for details on craft day. Yoga Classes in the Inspiration Room! With the change of seasons, so comes a time of transition. Please join us for faith-based yoga classes with themes and music aimed at uplifting your spirit. These classes will take place in the Inspiration Room from 5:15-6:15 P.M. Tuesday, September 11; Tuesday, October 2, 9, & 30. Please bring a yoga mat and journal (free journals are available in the Inspiration Room). Please check the G.I.G. Facebook page and the Lamplighter for updates and the possibility of more classes being added. Also, if you would like to arrange a yoga class with a group of 4-6 friends, contact Lisa at lisaguetzko@gmail.com and we can set up a special date and time! Also, come and check out the "Give when you can - Take when you need" shelves! These shelves hold inspirational treasures that are free for the taking! Lots of inspirational journals are currently available, and the "Read and Return" shelf has some great reads! Girlfriends in God/G.I.G is starting a new Bible Study on Tuesday, September 11 th G.I.G We meet in the Inspiration Room (lower level of the education wing) on Tuesday evenings 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. This is a group for all women 18 to 108 to encourage one another and dig deeper in the Word and our Faith. Come when you are able and participate at the level that works the best for you. For more information or to request a study guide, contact Tanya Burnett (tanyaburnett1@gmail.com or ). Our study is Finding I Am by Lysa Terkeurst. What is the deep cry of your heart? The ache in your soul that keeps you up at night? The prayer you keep repeating? Jesus not only cares about this deep, spiritual wrestling, but He also wants to step in and see you through it. Join Lysa on the streets of Israel to explore the seven I AM statements of Jesus found in the Gospel of John. Through this interactive, in-depth study we will be trading feelings of emptiness and depletion for the fullness of knowing who Jesus is like never before. Page 3 Lamplighter

We thank you for your faithful support of LSI you create so many new life-changing possibilities for children, adults, and families! Learn more at & Ewalu Fall Festival & Quilt Auction Saturday, Sept. 15 th This event is the Ewalu's only fundraising event. There will be a country store, live music, a worship service, hayride tours of the camp, and quilts displayed for review beginning at 9:00 A.M. A free-will offering lunch will be served at noon and the quilt auction starts at 1:00 P.M. Held annually with the help and support of congregations, quilters, and volunteers, hundreds of quilts are donated to the camp, and numerous items are given to raise additional funds. These funds support projects and capital improvements that the camp cannot achieve through the annual operating budget. This event would not be possible without the generosity of quilters and crafters throughout Eastern Iowa. Thank you for the many creative ways that you support this ministry. Help us spread the word about the Fall Festival & Quilt Auction by inviting your family, friends, congregation, and community to attend. Page 5 Lamplighter
