November 2018 Dear FUMC, The beauty surrounding us this time of year is simply breathtaking. I hope you are finding ways to appreciate this gift! October is traditionally the month many churches focus on stewardship. Stewardship is how we take care of God s gifts/blessings. This year, FUMC is focusing on how we are being good stewards by taking a closer look at our membership vows (Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service and Witness). How are we living into these vows? Are they making a difference? Simply put, do our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness really make a difference? Yes. Yes. Yes. A million times, yes! I have been privileged and blessed to be your pastor for going on 4 months and I see how you, the church, are making a difference in many ways. I will share with you from a pastor/mom perspective. My girls love coming to church. They deeply loved their church family in Auburn and I anticipated it taking them a while to warm up here at FUMC. Over the summer there were amazing children s ministry opportunities for them (Summer Family Fun Nights and VBS). They started building relationships right away with people of all ages. We had members of the church who invited us on outings and play dates because they cared and shared the gift of hospitality. Karis is engaged in worship and I saw her whole body light up when the girls choir sang How Far I ll Go in September and when the bell choir shared their beautiful music in October. Both Karis and Zoe are fully embracing the spiritual practice of Prayer that they learned about in Sunday school this past week. Karis is eating breakfast with her Prayer Bear and remembering to draw/write in her prayer journal. My children are growing in their discipleship in beautiful ways. I couldn t ask for anything more, as a parent. There are people praying for the church and its ministries every day. We have people showing up and giving their time and participating in worship every week. We have people giving financial gifts so that children s ministries have the funding they need to help children grow in their discipleship. We have people serving in ministries that reach out to children, teach children and ultimately love children! We have people living faithful ways that show Karis and Zoe (and all our children) the amazing grace of Jesus. WE, FUMC, ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE. Thanks be to God! So, when you receive your packet from the Stewardship Committee asking how you will financially support the church in the year 2019, remember, your giving makes a difference. You are changing lives. Fairport United Methodist Church is in the business of nurturing all people on their life s journeys and bringing God s love into the world. There are many ways you can be a part of that but your financial gifts are certainly an important piece! Your gifts to both the Operating Budget (children s, youth, adult ministries, current expenses, staff) AND the 50/50 Budget (Outreach, Trustees/building) are appreciated and needed. Thank you. Blessings, Pastor Richelle

Please come and be a part of an important day in the life of the church. There will be a chance to worship with other churches in the Genesee Valley District and meet our District Superintendent, Rev. Vonda Fossitt. Even if you aren t a member you are welcome to attend. Yet, only members can vote. See you all there!

Thank you from Outreach November is a time of planning the menu, preparing all the food, and eating (or maybe over eating) the wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. In this time of abundance, it is hard to imagine that there are so many people in our area going hungry. Thanks to your 50/50 pledges, Outreach has made several donations in the past year to combat this problem. We fund The Sunday Dinner Ministry, a Sunday afternoon community dinner program designed to help those who are in need of a warm meal, or just a friendly smile and fellowship on a Sunday afternoon. We also support our Beyond These Walls Ministry, who feed our Rochester neighbors on the third Sunday every month at Sanctuary House and Francis Center. At Learning Links, a tutoring program at the Pines of Perinton, we help provide healthy snacks to the students. We donate to Foodlink that has a BackPack Program, which provides children in need with bags of nutritious food each weekend, when school meals are not available. We also made a contribution to the Perinton Food Shelf, an emergency food relief organization that serves the Village of Fairport and Town of Perinton. The Outreach Team and all those it serves are very thankful for your continued support. Making a Difference 2019 Prayers ~ Presence ~ Gifts ~ Service ~ Witness Pledge Sunday - November 11 Pledge Sunday will be November 11. The Pledge letter and Pledge Card have been mailed to your home. Many have attended the Q&A sessions that we held on October 25. We hope that you understand the goals FUMC would like to accomplish in 2019, and what part we all play in our Mission. Please attend the Sunday services on November 11 and bring your Pledge Card. Let s make this is strongest pledge year ever and pray that 2019 will bring us many opportunities to bring God s love to our world. Ruth Circle will meet on Monday, November 5 at 7:00pm in the church parlor. All are welcome to participate. There will be a presentation by a representative from the Strong Museum of Play. Naomi Circle will meet on Thursday, November 8 at 9:30am in the church parlor. All are welcome to participate. We will be making a holiday craft. Please bring a mason jar or old vase, and $1. Church Luncheon and Informational Meeting In February, 2019, a special United Methodist Denomination General Conference will be held to vote on how the Book of Discipline addresses the issue of homosexuality. Although Fairport United Methodist Church has little direct influence on the upcoming decision, we owe it to ourselves to be as informed as possible. Some critical church decisions may be required as a result of general conference action. Church Council and the Reconciling Ministries Team will co-sponsor a luncheon at 12 pm on November 11 to provide information about the upcoming general conference. The primary purpose of the luncheon is to inform and address questions of clarification. There will be other opportunities for people to participate in open forum sessions where additional information will be provided and personal sharing will be encouraged. Soup, sandwiches, and drinks will be provided in order to make efficient use of our time. Financial donations will be appreciated to offset the costs.

Music Ministry News Those who sing pray twice. Save the dates! Our Christmas Cantata, The Winter Rose, will be presented on Saturday, December 8 at 7pm and Sunday, December 9 at 3pm. There will be a freewill offering following each presentation. Childcare will be provided both times. A reception will follow the Sunday afternoon performance. The Cantata is a program of choral, organ, and handbell music for Advent and Christmas. We hope that many people will come to this special musical event! The Winter Rose is a cantata that we did many years ago and was a favorite among the choir singers and the congregation. We are excited to share it again with everyone! Mark your calendars now and save the dates! Please join us and bring a friend! There are 43 people singing in the Cantata Choir this year! We have been honored with an amazing opportunity to be part of a 200+ voice choir to perform The Winter Rose at Carnegie Hall with the composer himself conducting the choir and orchestra! Distinguished Concerts International of New York contacted me after finding recordings of our cantata from last year on Facebook. They had conference calls with me from New York, and invited us to sing as part of The Winter Rose concert at Carnegie Hall this year. Each singer pays to underwrite the cost of the concert. Five of us (myself, Judy Bermudez, Phoebe Grow, Greg Hill, and Erica Smith) will be taking part over Thanksgiving weekend, rehearsing with the composer and singing in the performance. I m sure we will learn a lot from Joseph Martin s approach to his music, and then we can incorporate that into our own performances here on December 8 and 9! The concert at Carnegie Hall is on Monday, November 26 at 7pm. Tickets range from $20-$100. If you will be near NYC and would like to attend the concert, you may buy tickets online (or scroll to the bottom of this webpage to see our choir s name and info!): Joseph and Pamela Martin write this about The Winter Rose: From the earliest Christian time, the rose has been a symbol of divine love. Echoing through our sanctuaries in the melodies and texts of many beloved carols, it brings to life the beautiful visions of biblical prophets and the hope of early Christian pilgrims. Today, the rose remains a vital expression of love and peace both inside the Church and the outside world. It is our sincerest prayer that as Christ, the Rose of Sharon, opens before you this Christmas, your spirit will be encouraged by the beauty of God s greatest gift. Join us at Carnegie Hall at FUMC or both! Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Sunday School children learned about trick-or-treating for UNICEF received their UNICEF boxes on October 28 th. Please return boxes to the Sunday School classrooms by Sunday, November 11 th. The money collected will helps children around the world receive healthcare, nutrition, education, safe water and emergency relief. Memory Verses New this year, we will be giving children Bible Scripture verses to memorize. Children (grades 1-5) will be given the verse(s), at the beginning of the month and then have the whole month to work at memorizing it. In October, the children were challenged to memorize The Lord s Prayer. At the end of the year, children will be given a certificate showing that they memorized all of the verses from the year. Our goal is for the children to learn scripture which can give them strength as they live and grow. Children s Worship Bulletins We encourage you and your children to pick up a Children s Bulletin for the 10:30 Worship. The service program is outlined for the children so that it easy for them to read. There are puzzles, coloring pages, and activities which tie the Sunday School lessons and worship themes together. On the last page of the bulletin, you will find the Family Page. This page includes activities to help you bring the lessons learned in Sunday School and worship home. Most weeks, children will also be receiving a Faith on the Go! slip in Sunday School which challenges them to try to different activities at home. These optional and fun questions and activities can be great conversation starters to help you and your child grow in faith together. The youth enjoyed a relaxing, renewing retreat at Lake Sacandaga the YOUTH MINISTRY first weekend of October! Highlights were discussions, singing around the fire each night, a hike up Mt. Hadley, a trip to Lake George, kayaking and rowing, lots of food, a sensational boys vs. girls dance competition, and time to relax and connect with each other! The Chicken BBQ was a big success! Thank you to all! We made about $1,300 which will be used as a down payment for Bike Trip sites. A HUGE hats off to Cathy Fischer and Louise Kurz who coordinated this effort! The Adams Basin Service Project was greatly appreciated by the ABUMC folks. The youth and adults pitched right in trimming bushes, yard work, mulching, cleaning, washing windows, dusting, vacuuming and organizing. Events: Jr High Youth sleepover Friday Oct Jr and Sr High Youth - Long Acre Corn Maze Youth Sunday on November 18 Nov 12 Jr. High Confirmation Day Apart Hanging of the Greens on Thanksgiving Sunday. Care Packages for college students Nov. 18, 25 and Dec 2, sending on Dec. 3. We invite the church to participate in preparing goodies for the packages.

Advent Wreath Lighting Advent begins on December 2! One special way of celebrating this season is to light the Advent Wreath during worship. All are welcome...alone, with a friend, or with your family! Please sign up on the bulletin board across from the church office. Any questions? Please contact Lesley Dollard at or ldollard@rochester.rr.com. Christmas/Advent Church Decorating O come all ye faithful joyful and triumphant O come ye O come ye to the Hanging of the Greens! On Sunday, November 25 the FUMC Family will continue the tradition of the Hanging of the Greens in preparation for the Advent and Christmas seasons. Please join us at 12noon for the fun and wonder of decorating the church. All are welcome! YOUNG ADULT The Young Adults are continuing to do Gatherings every Monday evening at 7pm in Rm 207. This is a time for fellowship, discussion and growth. We have a group working on putting together an International Mission Trip. We have decided that rather than setting a date and location for the trip and then making ourselves crazy trying to hit it, we will concentrate on fundraising and when we get enough funds we will then decide where and when to go. Fundraisers planned: Cinnamon Buns in November and December Serving dinner at the UMW Candlelight Dinner in December, The Young Adults will be part of the weekly rotation serving a dinner at St Joseph s Night Shelter, serving on December 24 and December 31. When the college young adults are home over Christmas break, along with Gatherings, we will do a Potluck Dinner, and will be going Curling. If you have any questions, or would like more information, please contact Mark Renfro, mrenfro53@gmail.com.
