THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Vive La Différence! People dye their hair strange colors or get a Mohawk just to stand out. They get tattoos or body piercings to express their individuality. But then they spend hundreds of dollars buying designer clothes and trendy foot-ware so they can be like everyone else. And they keep getting new cell phones, computers, car and appliances to keep up with the Joneses. So, what s the deal? Is it more important to be different or to fit in? In today s gospel, Jesus says that we should be in the world without being of the world. In other words, we should stick out, but not like a sore thumb. We don t have to wear burkas, yarmulkes or turbans; we don t need a red dot on our forehead. Our values, attitude and compassion should make us stand out, make it obvious to others that we are Christians. When we were kids, this was Servers Lectors Eucharistic Ministers Greeters difficult. Since almost everyone we knew was a Catholic, or at least a Christian, all we had to do to live our faith was to follow the crowd, to do like everyone else. Life is certainly different today. The crowd is no longer following Jesus. If we re going to follow Him, we ll have to leave the crowd. While they re heading to the beach, we ll be headed to Church. When they campaign for the popular candidate, we ll be supporting the one who shares our values. When the crowd is screaming for more freedom and tolerance, we ll be promoting the sacredness of life, marriage, and family, and the need for more compassion, forgiveness and self-control. Maybe living by faith and values is becoming the road less traveled but it is still the only option for one who is following Christ. But don t feel bad: being in the world but not of the world is pretty neat! Families Coping with the Opioid Crisis St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church 300 NH 25, Meredith NH Wednesday, May 30, :30 PM until 8:00 PM When addiction causes problems, not only does the person with addiction suffer, but those around the person also suffer. The aim of this presentation is to provide information and resources that will help family members and other loved ones of individuals with addiction find ways to cope with and reduce their own suffering. Walk-ins are welcome or register and learn more at The program is hosted by Catholic Charities NH and led by Rev John Mahoney, Jr. FYI: Fr. Mahoney often covers masses when Fr. Ray is on vacation. We have a new parishioner who would like to attend mass (any mass), but is unable to drive herself (due to vision problems). She lives in Northfield near Sandogardy Pond Road. If you are able to help her out please call Claire in the office at NH Catholic Charities Appeal for the support of programs and services throughout NH. Services are provided to all persons in need on behalf of the Catholic faithful. The campaign runs throughout the month of May. Please be as generous as you can.
