1 the Beacon First United Methodist Church Marion, NC May 2014 Seeking to be a Lighthouse guiding people in Worship, Discipleship, and Christian Service. Look who is turning 169! Happy Birthday! I have not consulted with Miss Manners about the proper length, but my hunch is that when you turn 169, it probably deserves more than one day s worth of celebrating. As a church, we will celebrate 169 years of Christian witness this month. May is also the month that the entire United Methodist Church celebrates her rich heritage as a denomination. We have come a long way since 1845 and McDowell County was 2 years old as county. We have grown, and God has proven His faithfulness. Better still are the indicators that we are still growing and being shaped by God s grace into a people of faith. With gratitude and appreciation, we celebrate the faithful who have led and served alongside us these 169 years. We also rejoice in the new generation of faithful disciples arising around us, ready and able to keep the light of Christ shining through the ministries of First United Methodist Church. We have much to celebrate. I plan to start early so that when we come to th and our church birthday celebration, we will be ready to blow out the candles and get set for the ministry God continues to invite us into. What an exciting time to be part of First United Methodist Church. Happy Birthday! I ll look for you, -Pastor Kent IN THIS ISSUE A Word from Pastor Kent Page 1 Members in Action Page 2 May Calendar Page 2 Children and Youth Page 3 Intentional Vital Signs Page 4 UMW News Page 5 UMM Corner Page 5 Mother s Day Offering Page 5 Memorials Page 6 May Birthdays Page 7 Fix Your Eyes On Jesus May he enlighten the eyes of your mind so that you can see what hope his call holds for you. Ephesians 1:18 What does it mean to be just like Jesus? The world has never known a heart so pure, a character so flawless. His spiritual hearing was so keen he never missed a heavenly whisper. His mercy so abundant he never missed a chance to forgive. No lie left his lips, no distraction marred his vision. He touched when others recoiled. He endured when others quit. Jesus is the ultimate model for every person...god urges you to fix your eyes upon Jesus. Heaven invites you to set the lens of your heart on the heart of the Savior and make him the object of your life.

4 The Beacon-Page 4 Intentional Vital Signs By Cynthia G. Davis When I was a sophomore at UNCG, I took Fundamentals of Nursing, a combined theory and lab course required of all pre-nursing majors. Every Tuesday afternoon after Fundamentals lecture, I hiked up to the fourth floor of Moore Building for four more hours of nursing skills lab. Goal: Try really hard to master those psychomotor skills that I thought would make me a nurse. I quickly learned the skills had roots, scientific reasoning behind the how and why and when of performing them. Nothing was happening by chance when a nurse measured vital signs on a patient what lay people called temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure. And I quickly realized that my learning of nursing had to be intentional if I was ever going to master those skills and one day have BSN, RN after my name. You know, that concept of vital signs isn t limited to physical measurement. We can consider it spiritually, too. Let s ask the question. What is our church s Intentional Vital Signs? If God reached down from heaven today and measured the spiritual vital signs of our congregation where would we rank on the continuum of spiritual growth, ministry, and health? ICU? Rehab? Okeydokey? Intentional Vitality for Christ within our church is not a project. It is not a new thing the United Methodist Church has tossed our way. It is a movement among believers focused on getting serious about God in purposeful, determined, powerful ways unlike we have ever done, incredible ways producing richer, riper fruit than has ever been produced, visible and tangible evidence of God s work in us individually and in our congregation and in our community. Intentional Witness, Intentional Prayer, Intentional Worship, Intentional Study of God s Word, Intentional Accountability, Intentional Love, Intentional Forgiveness, Intentional Service, Intentional Compassion, these are some of our vital signs. We ve brought them with us through the history of our church, through our collective lives, and now right now God is asking us to transfer our knowledge, our giftings and talents, our life experiences, our commitment to intentional living into what He has coming down the pike for us and for our community. Let s raise our temperature together! God bless you.

Deadline for applications is May 5, 2014 Mother s Day Offering For Givens Estates Even the smallest gifts will make a big difference in the lives of seniors with limited resources. Givens cares for 1,150 seniors living in the three communities: Givens Estates, (Asheville) Great Laurels, Waynesville) and Highland Farms (Black Mountain). Last year, more than $715,000 went to help folks with basic life and health needs. Embracing this unique ministry is one of our commitments as a congregation. Our prayers and support throughout the year for this uncommon mission are welcomed. Our offerings today help pay for health care, medical or dental costs, prescriptions, transportation, meals, groceries, in-home nursing care, and other ongoing living expenses for those residents who are facing significant financial challenges. Let us together joyfully participate in lifting up seniors in our region through this ministry.
