1 the Beacon First United Methodist Church Marion, NC June 2015 Seeking to be a Lighthouse guiding people in Worship, Discipleship, and Christian Service. MERCI! GRACIAS! DANKE! GRAZIE! ありがとう! In every language, Jennifer, Lydia, Sara, and I want to share our gratitude for the five years we have shared here at First Methodist Church. Thank you for the privilege of calling the parsonage our home these past five years. Thank you for entrusting me as your pastor. Thank you for the privilege to preach and share God s Word with you. And thank you for helping Jennifer and I raise our children into girls who love God and church. Sara will tell you quick that First United Methodist Church is her church. Soon, I stand in the lineage of faithful clergy who helped to lead First Methodist over the years. I am grateful for the ministry we have shared these past five years. Together we have witnessed the Holy Spirit s power transforming us into a community of vibrant faith. From that first hot day in July, I saw the potential of First Methodist Church and in five short years we have further uncovered the rich promises God has in store for his people at First Methodist Church. It has been an honor to share life and ministry with you as we have journeyed together. I look forward to our final month together, still confident that the most abundant years of ministry lie in front of First United Methodist Church. I ll look for you. -Pastor Kent IN THIS ISSUE A Word from Pastor Kent Page 1 Members in Action Page 2 June Calendar Page 2 Children and Youth Page 3 Annual Conference Page 4 Memorials Page 5 June Birthdays Page 6 God Sees Our Value God does not see the same way people see. People look at the outside of a person, but the LORD looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7 God sees us with the eyes of a Father. He sees our defects, errors, and blemishes. But he also see our value. What did Jesus know that enabled him to do what he did? Here s part of the answer. He knew the value of people. He knew that each human being is a treasure. And because he did, people were not a source of stress but a source of joy. Max Lucado

This year s theme is Everest-Conquering Challenges with God s Mighty Power, and is open to kids ages 3 through 5th grade. Also, VBS wouldn t be the same without our fantastic volunteers! If you would like to join the fun, volunteers (and children who are participating) can register online at vacation-bible-school, where there will be a description of each volunteer opportunity. High School Bible Study High School Youth! Don t forget that we are now meeting at 4 pm for Bible Study. See you there! Safe Sanctuaries We will have a Safe Sanctuaries training day for everyone who works with our youth and children on June 14th after church. If you are a Sunday School teacher, Children s Church teacher, Wednesday night teacher, or youth chaperone, please make every effort to be there! 4 We Made History! In case you missed the celebration, we have Commemorative 170 Year Heritage Books available in the church office. These books were completed by the 2015 Heritage Committee. Western NC Annual Conference June At Lake Junaluska Please pray for Danny Cook, Kay Tate, Norman Guthrie and Pastor Kent as they represent our church and district at the Annual Conference. United Methodist Men Page 4 The Beacon Thank you to the church members for the support and encouragement we receive from you. So far this year we have cooked peanuts, and our sales are steady and good for this time of the year. Hot dog cooking for FUMC events has become a regular event. The grill was a great investment. The report from the scout troop is that it is doing well, but can always use our encouragement and help. Thanks to Craig Stainbrook and Amy Moomaw for representing us well with the troop. We had a successful Easter morning breakfast. Two scholarship applications have been received and are ready for review. Our focus is primarily on our church and local missions. Over the last few years our discussion at our cooking events always comes around to the stove. This year we took action and approved $1000 toward a new stove. Since then the Trustees have agreed to help; ECEC has committed some funds, and we have received individual commitments of money toward the stove. We have enough committed to start the process toward replacement which we would like to do this summer. If you would like to help toward this effort either as an organization or individual, you can contribute by marking your check or envelope with the word stove. An account is set up to receive the funds. We are looking at a ten burner two oven gas stove to replace the two electric stoves. We believe the installed cost will be in the $6000 range. Thank you for your continued support. Men, there is still room at the breakfast table at the Steak House on the second Sunday of the month for you to join us. Charlie Sander Marion Elementary Faculty and Staff would like to say a BIG Thank You to the First United Methodist Church for supplying breakfast during teacher appreciation week. Thanks again for making our school a better place for children to learn. We truly thank you! Marion Elementary School
