3 Daughters of Charity Services of San Antonio (DCSSA) CHARITIES By Annette Etnyre, Committee Chair The tables we purchased for the Food Bank Project hold a lot of boxes. L-R Annette, Jeanne, Renee, Lori and Edna helped fill them on October 23, Our Christmas Project this year supports the two Christmas parties that DCSSA hosts for 350 senior citizens. Adele Dufilho describes this community in her clothing, for diabetic and nutrition classes, for exercise programs and educational classes. They live in our neighborhood in their own homes or apartments quietly living their lives in a day to day struggle. this year we plan to touch the hearts especially of those lonely, elderly and in need. She writes that what they like best socialization, the chance to visit with their friends in a safe happy place. On November 30, we will deliver the throws and bath towel sets purchased with our budget as well as some from members. On December 14, we will deliver the Angel Tree gifts donated by parishioners. We have requested 25 throws and 25 bath towel sets and we usually received all that we ask for thanks be to God! Jesuit Refugee Service in Uganda Father Kevin sent a beautiful letter of gratitude for our donation of $1500. He will use these funds to help the refugees there needing assistance. He later told me of two recipients. A young man of 25 who has never been to school will receive $27 per month tuition to attend adult literacy classes. He also works at the center doing construction work. Another refugee found a job in Entebbe, but could not afford the first month s rent. Father Kevin gave him $60 so he could rent an apartment there. As always, Father Kevin expressed his thanks to his Spiritual Mothers who pray for him and the refugees. REFLECTION CORNER By Cynthia Gdula Spiritual Advisor joansaint@earthlink.net On Sunday the 3 rd of December we enter into the Church s new year with the beautiful liturgical season of Advent. I would like to take the virtue of gratitude & look at the season of Advent. There should be four components to our prayers: Adoration, Gratitude, Repentance & Supplication. Our communal prayer the Our Father is a sterling example of the perfect prayer. What is gratitude? Gratitude is love that has been acknowledged & a grateful heart has always been a Judeo-Christian virtue. Theologian Meister Eckhart says if our only prayer is gratitude that is sufficient. The word Advent means waiting for the arrival of a notable person or event. We are eagerly awaiting the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ our Savior & looking past the Nativity to Jesus second coming with anticipation & gratitude. In great humility, Jesus came down in human form to meet us, live with us & redeem us the supreme act of love. And we in turn should acknowledge this ultimate manifestation of God s love with a tender & grateful heart. God the Son came to be in personal relationship with us by dwelling with us. How do we respond to this call so we can make it an indwelling within us & have a relationship with the Lord that is founded on the bedrock of hope, peace, joy & loving surrender? I truly believe at the Nativity heaven & earth kissed. Reflection: How is the life that we are living help make this an everlasting kiss to sustain us until Jesus Christ s second coming? It s not how much we give, but how much we put into giving Mother Teresa Page 3

5 Spotlight Member I was born in Laredo, Texas in Three years later my Dad retired from the Air Force and bought a ranch just outside of Seguin, Texas. With one older brother and two older sisters we were busy with our horses and cattle, 4-H House Club and trail Vicki Pfullmann rides. I met John, my husband, at Seguin High School in We married in 1980, yes high school sweethearts. John started his first Engineering and Design job at Swearingen Aircraft in San Antonio just weeks after our honeymoon in July. I started my first work as a Dental Hygienist about 3 months later. Of the 37 years I have practiced, the last 34 have been with Dr. Craig Carlson in the Stone Oak area. In 1985 we had our first son, Justin Paul and our second son Kevin Michael was born in Both of the boys completed their Bachelor s Degrees from UTSA, Justin in Mechanical Engineering and Kevin in Business Economics. John and I are blessed to have them both living here in town and all of our families are close by in Kerrville, New Braunfels, and Houston. John and I joined Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Prior to that, we were parishioners of St. Joan of Arc Church in Kirby, Texas. In 2012 I joined the Catholic Daughters, their Charter year. Quickly I became involved in the Annual Brunch and Style Show fundraiser as Chair and Co-chair of the decorating committee. With lots of support, that has been fun and successful, I continue to serve in the decorating committee this year. For the last three years, I have adopted two different Seminarians. I have been chairing and co-chairing the refreshments committee for the Thursday meetings and with everyone s great support, we eat well. John and I enjoy gardening, traveling, swimming, walking and cycling on the trails in San Antonio and finding new restaurants to enjoy with friends. I feel blessed. Your Birthday is your very own Special Blessed Day! Thumbprint Cookies Holy Humor The Santa Claus at the shopping mall was very surprised when Emily, a young lady aged about 20 years old walked up and sat on his lap. Now, we all know that Santa doesn't usually take requests from adults, but she smiled very nicely at him, so he asked her, 'What do you want for Christmas?' 'Something for my mother, please,' replied Emily sweetly. 'Something for your mother? Well, that's very loving and thoughtful of you,' smiled Santa. 'What do would you like me to bring her?' Without turning a hair Emily answered quickly, 'A son-in-law.' 2 cups sifted flour ½ tsp salt 1 cup butter ½ cup superfine sugar 2 tsp vanilla (or 1 ½ tsp vanilla and ½ tsp almond extract) Your preferred jam or other filling ½ cup sifted confectioners sugar By Barbara Nasis 1. Sift together flour and salt; set aside. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy; add extracts. Slowly mix in flour, ½ cup at a time until just blended. Chill dough for 1 to 2 hours. 2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Meanwhile, quickly shape dough into 1-inch balls and space them 2 inches apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Make a deep thumbprint in the center of each; fill with preferred jam or chocolate. 3. Bake for 15 minutes or until cookies are the color of pale sand. Transfer to wire cooling racks. 4. When cooled, dust cookies with confectioners sugar. Pack in tins for gifts or serve to holiday guests. Trust the Lord with all your heart. Proverbs 3:5 Page 8
