This program is one of the many efforts the Knights of Columbus have to Keep Christ in Christmas. The program began with the assembly of council members and their families as well as members of the All Saints Community in the Church atrium at 7:45 PM. Once assembled outside, prayers were offered the lighting by the Council s Grand Knight Chris Diaz. In accordance with Knights of Columbus guidelines The lit Christmas Star at All Saints (top); Members of the Lumen Christi family applaud the lighting of the Christmas Star (left); Members of the All Saints Family in prayer before the lighting (right). Photos taken by John Poston at precisely 8 PM the signal was given to light up the Christmas Star. A round of applause was followed by Christmas Carols as the gathering moved from the outside lawn to the Fellowship Hall of the Kamel Life Center. Once inside, all were treated to desserts and hot beverages as the Christmas music continued in the background. Desserts were supplied by the Knights and their families as the newly formed Ladies Auxiliary of Lumen Christi Council coordinated the effort along with event co-chairman Harry Storey, who is also Family Program Director for the council. Event co-chairman Gerry Rice handled the prayer and music aspects of the evening and supplied his now famous mulled apple cider. Ladies Auxiliary members Maureen Morel and Ann Fox secured the decorations and the Ladies Auxiliary, led by President Diane Poston, did a fine job in getting Fellowship Hall ready for the Christmas event. The Christmas Star, which is permanently located on the southeast facing outside wall just to the left of the stained glass window, was designed and constructed by Brother Knight Henry Dominguez last year with financing provided by Lumen Christi Council. 2 The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 2 GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE BY CHRIS DIAZ, GRAND KNIGHT My Fellow Brother Knights: As a Catholic and a Brother Knight I was awed as I wandered through Greece and Turkey walking in the footsteps of Paul the Apostle. When asked, I have often stated that I was enlightened, enriched and exhausted by the pilgrimage. That exhaustion fades in comparison as I look back and realize that we stood and prayed where Paul stood to talk to the citizens of Athens, Philippi, Thessalonica and Corinth; on the island of Patmos, Greece, we stood and prayed in the cave where John, the beloved apostle, was inspired to write the Book of Revelations; and in Kusadasi, Turkey, we stood and prayed in the house where the Blessed Virgin lived after Christ s death. On Pope Benedict s recent journey, he too stood and prayed at some of the same places. This Advent according to the three-year lectionary cycle, we take our Gospel readings for Ordinary Time from the Gospel of Luke. This past Sunday we started the season of Advent with the lighting of the first candle of the Advent wreath. On Tuesday, our Council took part in the Order-wide Light Up for Christ program. These symbols of lighting and beginning anticipate the celebration of the birth of Christ. In Luke s Gospel, the coming of Jesus is a two-fold event. The birth of Jesus anticipates the second advent of His return at the end of time. The season of Advent is a time of joyous expectation. The season of Advent is also a time of reflection on the purpose of Christian life and how we can better prepare for judgment when Jesus comes again. Paul makes this clear as well in the second reading this past Sunday, in his first letter to the Thessalonians. He warmly describes their faithful lives, but he also is aware that the coming of the Lord Jesus will be a time of judgment. Brother Knights if you recall your exemplification into the First Degree, similar words were highlighted and brought to your attention. We are always reminded that the second coming may happen at any time. We must always reflect on what we have done in life to prepare us for the life to come. Those who actively participate in the programs of the Knights of Columbus, especially here at All Saints, have an almost unending supply of activities that can give them a step up in preparing for the time of judgment. We offer numerous opportunities to show charity, fraternity, unity and patriotism. We have recently expanded our reach to include the ladies of our lives through the newly formed Ladies Auxiliary of Lumen Christi Council. We have proven that we are DO- ERS and not just talkers. Those that have not yet become active or are no longer active, please use this Advent season to reflect on what you have done to prepare for the second Advent of our Lord. Some of you have already done plenty, some of you may need to beef-up that report card. If that is the case check our calendar of activities and find something you like to do and participate. Help your fellow Knights continue to be the spark plug they have been for our parish in recent years. May each and every one of you enjoy a healthy and happy Christmas Season with your family, the family of All Saints and the family of God. Lift High the Cross Vivat Jesus! Chris Diaz Grand Knight chris.diaz@cdstats.com grandknight@lumenchristikc.org ================================================================= BUSINESS MEETING NOTES At the November business meeting we reviewed the success of the Pancake Breakfast, Spaghetti Dinner and the final numbers from the Plano Balloon Festival. We also discussed plans for this month s Light up for Christ event which is being combined with the Council's Christmas family activity. At our next meeting we will be discussing plans for some of the key activities early in the new year including the mid year planning session, Lone Rose Sunday and of course the BBQ Chicken Sale. - Gerry Rice

3 The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 3 KNIGHT OF THE MONTH For the month of October, Lumen Christi Council will present co-knight of the Month honors. Both recipients are rookies in terms of Knights of Columbus tenure but they have made up for lost time in their service to the council. Together they have shown the way that our newer members should step right in and get active and involved in the council. The first recipient joined our Order in February of this year. He moved on to earn his full Knighthood and his major degrees in April. Being selfemployed his available time was limited but he found areas where he could contribute fairly regularly - namely the coffee and donuts on Sunday mornings. The second recipient joined Lumen Christi as one of 14 inductees on the 124 th anniversary of the founding of the order in March of Family obligations limited his time as well, but he also found his niche and was available for the Little Saints Bar-b-ques and Pancake Breakfasts. Both of these Knights also contributed their time during the highly successful Plano Balloon Festival and Fall Festival weekends. Both of these men also proved that despite limited time availability, every Knight can contribute to the ongoing success of the council. It is with great pleasure that Lumen Christi Council recognizes Len Keifel and Ken Cernak as Knights of the Month for October. Len Kiefel (top) pictured at the recent Pancake Breakfast. Ken Cernak (bottom) pictured during the recent Little Saints Fall Picnic. - Pictures taken by Chris Diaz FAMILY OF THE MONTH The Family of the Month is deeply rooted in the history of All Saints Parish. As the 30 th anniversary slide show was being put together, numerous pictures of members of this family were continuously popping up. This month s recipients also span multiple generations. The first member of the family to join Lumen Christi Council did so in April of 2005, and he earned his major degrees two months later. He then went on to convince the family patriarch to join the order in October of He went on to earn his major degrees in April Both men were exemplified in the Fourth Degree in September of this year. Both Knights have been active from the start and made the Knights a family matter, getting both wives and daughters involved. In the month of October they were present at all of the calendared events pancake breakfast, Little Saints Bar-b-ques, School Concessions, Golden Saints Luncheon, Business meeting and staff meetings. Both of these men have shared their family with Lumen Christi Council and we are lucky to have them on board. It is with great pleasure that Lumen Christi Council recognizes the EXTENDED family of Bob and Betty Wise and Elizabeth and Henry Dominguez as Family of the Month for October. Henry Dominguez (left) and Bob Wise (right) accept congratulations from Grand Knight Chris Diaz at the last business meeting - Picture taken by Doug Hakala The Knight of the Month and Family of the Month are announced during the Grand Knight s report at our monthly business meetings. The selection process involves input from the Family Recognition and Council Recognition committees. The results are announced at the meeting and then reported in The Beacon. Grand Knight Chris Diaz will make his next presentation of the Knight of the Month and Family of the Month for the month of November at our next business meeting on Monday, December 18 at 7:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall of the Kamel Life Center. Please come and congratulate the recipients.

4 The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 4 RECRUITMENT CORNER BY JOHN POSTON, MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR My Brother Knights, As the Advent season approaches, it is truly appropriate to remind ourselves of the true meaning of this beautiful season. With the hustle and bustle normally associated with the Christmas season, it s certainly easy to lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas and easy to get caught up in the secular world s commercialized view of Christmas. But it doesn t have to be that way. Use the time of Advent to prepare spiritually for the incarnation of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Slow down and prayerfully reflect on this great mystery and gift in union with our Holy Church. Remember that Advent is a time of joy tinged with penance. Joy because we can imagine nothing more sweet than the Christ Child with his Mother Mary s bliss at His coming. Penance because we must strive to be properly disposed to receive so great a gift of His presence. So, my Brother Knights, let s all strive to truly put Christ back into Christmas. Best wishes to you and your family for a blessed Christmas! Now, for this month s thought on Recruiting Over the past year, the Lumen Christi Council has been very successful in recruiting new members. Since January 2006 the Council has welcomed 34 new members. New members can be an excellent source of recruiters provided that we can successfully sell them on diligently pursuing the Shining Armor Award during their first fraternal year as a Knight. The Shining Armor Award is a new member program sponsored by the Supreme Council that is designed to accomplish two principal objectives. First, the program is geared to getting new members active in the many facets of the Knights of Columbus as early as possible and maintaining that activity; and second, the program is designed to honor them as a valued member of the Council who has exemplified what a true Knight of Columbus is. To qualify for the Shining Armor Award new Knights must during their first year of membership: o o o o o Be involved in at least 3 council service programs; Attend at least 3 council business meetings; Receive their Third degree; Meet with their council s insurance representative; and Recruit at least one new member. Every new Knight exemplified in the First Degree since January 2006 is still eligible to qualify for the Shining Armor Award. I invite each new Knight to give serious consideration to jumping on board now to complete the requirements. If you need help with any of these requirements, in particular with recruiting a new member, let me know. I would be most happy to assist you in any way that I can. Also, if you believe that you have satisfied all the requirements, please let me know so that I can arrange for you to be properly recognized. All other members of the Lumen Christi Council are invited to encourage our new Knights to complete the requirements to receive this award. If every new Knight who joined the Knights of Columbus since January 2006 were to qualify for this award, the Council would benefit in a two fold manner: 1) The Council would have 34 new members who truly understand and embrace what it is truly all about to be a Knight of Columbus and 2) The Council could add 34 new members during the current fraternal year just from this effort. As you can see, this is a great way to build our Council both in its ability to undertake new activities, events and projects as well as in membership growth. Vivat Jesus! 5 The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 5 COUNCIL WELCOMES YET ANOTHER NEW KNIGHT At a First Degree exemplification conducted by the outstanding Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Council 7850 ceremonial team on November 20 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Faith Formation Center in Plano the Lumen Christi Council proudly welcomed Jack Ayers into our Order. Jack comes to our Council with a great resume of service at All Saints over the past several years. Jack currently serves the parish as an Usher and a Eucharistic Minister. On hand to personally welcome Jack was the Lumen Christi Council s Membership Director, John Poston. Please take the opportunity to congratulate Jack Ayers on becoming the newest member of the Lumen Christi Council. The members of the Lumen Christi Council are to be congratulated for their untiring efforts since the initial organization of the Council in May 2004 in recruiting new members into our great Order. With the addition of Jack Ayers, we have added 9 new members during the current fraternal year and boast a total membership of 140 members. This is quite an accomplishment for a Council organized just two and a half years ago with 54 Charter Members. 6 The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 6 COUNCIL SCHEDULES DECEMBER RECRUITING INFORMATION MEETING With the October Blitz effort now complete and new prospects from the Parish Annual Stewardship campaign, the Council has scheduled a Recruiting Information Meeting on Thursday, December 14. The Council s Recruiting Information Meetings are an excellent opportunity to tell prospects about the tremendous benefits and personal satisfaction that comes with being a member of the world s largest men s Catholic fraternal benefit organization. Prospective members view a video about the Order, get their questions answered, are given an opportunity to complete a Form 100 Membership Application and complete the required Admissions Committee interview all at the same time making them ready to be presented for approval by the Council, the final step before undertaking their First Degree Exemplification. Mark your calendar and make plans now to jump on board with the Council s aggressive recruiting efforts by attending the Information Meeting at 7:00 pm on Thursday, December 14 in the St. Teresa Room (formerly the Game Room). Invite that friend, neighbor or relative that you have been thinking about asking to join our great Order. This is a great opportunity for all first year Knights to complete the requirement of recruiting a new member in connection with earning the coveted Shining Armor Award. Chances are very good that he ll like what he sees and will make the commitment to join our fraternal Order. For additional information contact John Poston (972) or jposton@rpkco.com. - John Poston PASSBOOK SALES ENTER FINAL STRETCH WHAT IF THE THREE WISE MEN HAD QUIT AND GONE HOME 7/8 OF THE WAY TO BETHLEHEM? Alright, I concede that our Passbook situation is not equal to the stuff written in the Bible. Consider, we have recouped our investment and are in the black around $1,500. If we sell off the remaining 100 outstanding books, that translates into an additional $2,000 of charity money. This is easy money on the table if we get out there and make our Passbooks known. People are always looking for easy Christmas gifts. While supplies last, about 30 in council inventory, we are going to be selling wrapped books after all Masses during Advent. For that matter, if you know somebody who needs a wrapped book get one from me and make a personal sale. Come on wise men, get on your passbook and ride to Bethlehem with $3,500 in the charity fund - Curtis James ADDITIONAL FUND RAISING EFFORTS NEEDED Brother Knights, please keep in mind that we all must do our part to gather the funds necessary to make our overall program work. We have three simultaneous sales going on All Saints Hats (shown at left), Keep Christ in Christmas car magnets and Entertainment Passbooks (both shown below). Please make every effort to volunteer some time to help get these items sold during the Sundays in Advent. - Chris Diaz Picture taken by Mike Holmes Brooke and Lisa Storey with Christmas wrapped passbooks and Keep Christ in Christmas auto magnets at the recent Pancake Breakfast. 8 The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 8 KNOW YOUR KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS EMBLEM The Emblem of the Order dates from the Second Supreme meeting, May 12, 1883, when it was designed by James T. Mullen, who was then the first Supreme Knight. A quick glance at the emblem indicates a shield mounted upon the cross of Malta. The Shield is that associated with a medieval Knight. The cross of Malta is the representation in a traditionally artistic design of the Cross of Christ through which all graces of redemption were procured for mankind. This then represents the Catholic spirit of the Order. Mounted on the shield are three objects: a mace standing vertically, and crossed behind it, an anchor and a dagger or short sword. The mace from Roman days is symbolic of authority which must exist in any tightly bonded and efficiently operating organization. The anchor is the mariner's symbol for Columbus, patron of the Order. The short sword or dagger was the weapon of the Knight when engaged upon an errand of mercy. Thus, the shield expresses Catholic Knighthood in organized, merciful action and with the letters K of C, it proclaims this specific form of activity. The red, white and blue in the background of the shield of the Cross of Malta are the colors of our beloved country. Red is the symbol of stout-hearted courage. Blue is the symbol of hope. White is the symbol of nobility of purpose. Faith Hope Charity WARDEN VACANCY CALLS FOR SPECIAL ELECTION With the relocation of our Warden Sean Keating to a monastery in New Mexico, the office of Warden has opened up. At the last meeting the Trustees nominated Jeff Yeargan to fill this position. In accordance with the By-Laws of the Knights of Columbus a special election will be held at the next regularly scheduled Business meeting. Nominations will remain open until that time and nominations will be accepted from the floor. If other nominations are made an election will be held as outlined in the By- Laws. If no other nominations are made the Chair will accept a motion to close nominations and elect Jeff Yeargan by acclamation. - Bill Fox, PGK, Trustee Warden nominee Jeff Yeargan as he enjoyed festivities at the recent Fall Ball Photo taken by Chris Diaz DATE SET FOR LADIES APPRECIATION DINNER Please reserve Saturday, January 20, 2007, now for a great evening to show your appreciation for the special ladies in your life. What a great way to start the New Year! Red then, is the symbol of Faith, of belief in Christ in the Redemptive and in the mission of every man to spread the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. White is the color of the Eucharistic Host symbolizing God's presence among men and is thus, the symbol of Christ-like Charity. Blue is the color of Our Lady's mantle, in which she draped her beloved Son, through whom salvation came to a sinful world. Thus, blue is the symbol of Hope. Our five person committee is researching location sites, dining venues, entertainment and appreciation gifts; all for a reasonable cost of around $ /-. We are open to any and all ideas / suggestions on the above topics. Please contact the committee through spokesman Steve Morel at stevemoral@comcas.net. - Steve Morel

Spencer also won a regional medal for his age bracket in this year s competition. The contest is based on soccer's penalty kick. The soccer goal is divided into a series of five scoring zones, with a point value given to each section. After the participant is given 15 penalty kicks, his or her total number of points will be awarded depending upon the scoring zones that were hit. - Stan Schwieterman On Saturday, November 11, our council provided another fantastic fellowship opportunity for the parish by hosting a delicious spaghetti and meatball dinner. Norm Stauffer took on the challenge as Chairman, even though he was under the weather all week. Many fellow Knights assisted with the meal and fellowship to make this another successful and tasty event. Rich Frasco and Jeff Yeargan put the final touches on the spaghetti and spicy meatballs, while Norm s family and friends prepared the desserts Banana Pudding. Over 120 meals were served in the Fellowship Hall along with many take out dinners. Hats off to all our great helpers that night as they prepared, served, supervised and cleaned up. A special thanks to Dick Bovè for providing his selection of Italian music tapes for our musical entertainment and to our Ladies Auxiliary members, Maureen & Janet Morel who helped make the meatballs ahead of time and sold tickets and recorded the finances at the event. 10 The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 10 THE WITNESS OF THE SAINTS: SAINT LEO THE GREAT ON THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD Selected and Introduced by Jeff Vehige Saint Leo the Great was the first great pope of the Church. A native of Tuscany, he was the Archdeacon of Rome from 425 until he was consecrated pope on September 29, 440. He died on November 10, 461. During his pontificate, he endured invasions from the Vandals and Huns as well as a number of schisms and heresies within the Church. The following selection is taken from one of his Christmas Sermons. It contains one of the most famous lines in the history of the Catholic literature: Christian, remember your dignity. Here is St. Leo the Great: Dearly beloved, today our Savior is born; let us rejoice. Sadness should have no place on the birthday of life. The fear of death has been swallowed up; life brings us joy with the promise of eternal happiness. No one is shut out from this joy; all share the same reason for rejoicing. Our Lord, victor over sin and death, finding no man free from sin, came to free us all. Let the saint rejoice as he sees the palm of victory at hand. Let the sinner be glad as he receives the offer of forgiveness. Let the pagan take courage as he is summoned to life. In the fullness of time, chosen in the unfathomable depths of God s wisdom, the Son of God took for himself our common humanity in order to reconcile it with its creator. He came to overthrow the devil, the origin of death, in that very nature by which he had overthrown mankind. And so at the birth of our Lord the angels sing in joy: Glory to God in the highest, and the proclaim peace to his people on earth as they see the heavenly Jerusalem being built from all the nations of the world. When the angels on high are so exultant at his marvelous work of God s goodness, what joy should it not bring to the lowly hearts of men? Beloved, let us give thanks to God the Father, through his Son, in the Holy Spirit, because in his great love for us he took pity on us, and when we were dead in our sin he brought us to life with Christ, so that in him we might be a new creation. Let us throw off our old nature and all its ways and, as we have come to birth in Christ, let us renounce the works of the flesh. Christian, remember your dignity, and now that you share in God s own nature, do not return by sin to your former base condition. Bear in mind who is your head and of whose body you are a member. Do not forget that you have been rescued from the power of darkness and brought into the light of God s kingdom. Through the sacrament of baptism you have become the temple of the Holy Spirit. Do not drive away so great a guest by evil conduct and become again a slave to the devil, for your liberty was bought by the blood of Christ Jeff Vehige holds two degrees in theology from the University of Dallas. You can visit him on his website at jeffvehige.worldpress.com APOLOGETICS FOR DECEMBER We will be wrapping up our study of the Eucharist. We have been in John 6 up until now, but this lesson will move over to Luke 24 and read the story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Our lesson will focus on the third disciple not mentioned in Luke s narrative. The question we will pose from this lesson is, Should we be witness to our Brothers and Sisters in Christ who are non Catholic about the Eucharist? - Richard Nelson FIRST THURSDAY FOR VOCATIONS Fr. Peter will conduct another First Thursday of the Month service for Vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. The Rosary will be said from 6:45 to 7:00 PM in the chapel on Thursday, December 7. Immediately following will be one hour of Eucharistic Adoration. Please join us as we pray to the Lord of the Harvest to send workers to His harvest. Lumen Christi Council would like to see this monthly event grow big enough so that it must be moved from the chapel to the main sanctuary. Please help. - Richard Nelson

JANUARY 20 and 21 at the Parish level On the weekend of January which is the anniversary of Roe v. Wade (the Supreme Court case that legalized abortion in the United States). Lumen Christi will continue the tradition of Lone Rose Weekend incorporating two simple, yet meaningful, activities: (1) Procession of a "lone rose" at the beginning of the Mass and placing it on the altar. This can be done by the priest, Knight, Knight s Family, a Pregnant Lady or some other appropriate individual. The rose represents the memory of the 4,000 innocent children killed each day in the United States as a result of abortion. (2) Knights collecting money after Mass as the parishioners leave. The money will go to the White Rose Women's Center - the only Catholic crisis pregnancy center in the Dallas metroplex which provides assistance to hundreds of women each year - many who would have otherwise aborted their children. Volunteers are needed for the opening procession and after Mass. Anyone who participates in this project can use it towards earning your Angel Wings - the Knights of Columbus pro-life award. If you can spare minutes at or after the Mass you usually attend, please contact: event co-chair Brady Mimms at bradymims@hotmail.com or (972) or event co-chair Chris Diaz at chris.diaz@cdstats.com or (972)

12 The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 12 Brother Knights of District 76 DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT On behalf of myself and our worthy State Deputy Larry Zapalac, I congratulate the entire council and the recruiting team led by SK John Poston, on another fine October membership recruiting Blitz. You truly exemplify the spirit of fraternalism and the vision of Father McGivney by working diligently to spread the word about the Knights of Columbus to every Catholic gentleman in the All Saints Catholic Community. Thanks in part to your efforts, the state of Texas has had one of its best Octobers ever for recruiting and appears to be well on the way to achieving our annual goal of 5,050 new members. While identifying potential new members at the Blitz is certainly a noble achievement, the real challenge begins now, converting those prospects into members. Many Knights don t realize it, but membership retention actually begins the very moment that a candidate completes the Form 100. In the spirit of the season, the following article about what it really means to propose someone for membership is reprinted from kofc.org. Duties of a Proposer Proposing a new member is a commendable achievement and one to be proud of. However, as a proposer, turning over a completed Membership Document (#100) is not the end of the job. You must also take the responsibility to see that your recruit becomes fully accepted by his fellow council members and stays involved in council activities. There are several steps you can take to ensure this. Explain to him that the council's Admission Committee will examine his qualifications for membership and accompany him to the Admission Committee meeting. Introduce him to the members present. After he has been accepted, escort him to his First Degree and remain with him throughout the event. Following the exemplification, introduce him to his fellow council members. Take the newly initiated member and his family "under your wing". See that he learns council procedures, such as meeting times, committee assignments, etc. Introduce him and his family at council events. Encourage him to involve his - continued next column - family in council-sponsored activities. Accompany your recruit to his Second Degree and Third Degree exemplifications and stay with him throughout the day. Contact him before each council meeting and bring him to the meeting if necessary. If the new member becomes inactive for some reason, try to find out why. Call and ask to visit with him. Explain your concern about his absence and offer support or assistance. Encourage him to earn "Shining Armor" status within the council. If the Knight becomes inactive, his proposer should work with the retention committee to find out the reasons for his lapsed interest and try to conserve his membership. With a little personal effort you can help guarantee that your recruit becomes an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Lift High the Cross. Vivat Jesus! Bob Seegmiller District Deputy 76 DRIVERS NEEDED The National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC) has selected Dallas for their 2007 Bishop s workshop to be held February 5-8, The workshop will be held at the Omni Mandalay Hotel at Las Colinas located at 221 E Las Colinas Blvd, Irving, Texas. 14 The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 14 BROTHER KNIGHTS MOURN PASSING OF PAST GRAND KNIGHT OF SANTA MARIA COUNCIL Santa Maria Council 6065 and the Knights of Columbus suffered a great loss on November 5 with the passing of Past Grand Knight Ronald Fossier, who succumbed to his long battle with brain cancer. The 60-year old Fossier, who would have celebrated his 61st birthday on November 16, died peacefully at his home in Plano, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, son, Ronald Jr., two daughters, Charlene Johnson and Sabrina Cademartori, and eight grandchildren; as well as his brother, Freddie, and sisters Leona, Marie Ann, Dianne, and Glenda. He is also survived by his extended "family of Brother Knights", who grieve at his passing including many members of Lumen Christi Council who were members of Santa Maria Council prior to the formation of the new council at All Saints. Brother Ronald was born in Reserve, La., and raised in the Baton Rouge area, where he attended high school and then college at L.S.U., receiving a degree in electrical engineering and, most importantly, where he found the love of his life, Jennifer, with whom he shared more than 40 years. His working career with Texas Instruments and later with Raytheon (after they purchased the Defense Group from TI in 1997), took him all over the country and to Europe, with Plano being his final work destination. He was involved in a lot of "top secret" development work within Raytheon as a senior program manager, most recently heading up the Critical Electro-Optical Systems for the U.S. military. In all, he spent 39 years with TI/Raytheon. But it was not in his professional career that his Brother Knights came to know, love, and respect Ronald; it was for his countless and tireless efforts to serve Council 6065 that he really set the standard of excellence. After becoming a Brother Knight in March, 1992, Ronald spent the next 15 years proving that by doing, you can achieve, and that by achieving, you can make an impact. Not content to just be one of the workers, Fossier volunteered to lead committees and projects throughout his "life as a Knight", culminating in his election as Grand Knight of our Council in He served two terms as Grand Knight (July 1999 through June 2001) and through his leadership; the Santa Maria Council attained the Star Council Award from Supreme Council as well as the Lone Star Award with Distinction from the Texas State Council. Following his service as Grand Knight, he became a Trustee of the Council and it was during this tenure that his true dedication and devotion to our Council was revealed...when he "answered the call" to assume to duties of Financial Secretary, arguably one of the most difficult leadership roles in the Knights of Columbus. Ronald served in that capacity from July-2003 until February-2005, when his brain cancer became so severe that he could no longer function as Financial Secretary; and even then, he struggled mightily to assist his successor in a smooth transition. Lesser men could easily have said..."hey, I'm sick, take this stuff away and let somebody else do it!"...but not Ronald Fossier. The Council is and always will be better off because of his dedication to his duties as a Knight. He was honored as Knight of the Year twice (in and ), was awarded the Msgr. Kamel Award for Faithfulness ( ), and most recently the Cardinal Medeiros Fellow Award ( ), one of the highest honors a Texas Knight can attain. All of these awards are testament to his work in his Council, but they barely scratch the surface of what Fossier meant to his Council and the St. Mark Catholic community, which he joined in 1968 and was continuously involved, aside from the two years the family spent in Germany on a job assignment with TI. Brother Fossier's life was remembered at a vigil service on November 7, celebrated by Msgr. Duffy Gardner, followed by a Requiem Mass on November 8, presided over by Father Clifford Smith. Both services were held at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Plano. Internment was held at Calvary Hill Mausoleum in Dallas. - Pete Maurer, Santa Maria Council

LADIES AUXILIARY OF LUMEN CHRISTI The Ladies Auxiliary of Lumen Christi had their second official meeting on November 20. Twelve new members signed up and paid their dues. As an auxiliary of the Knights, the main focus of the group will be to assist and support the Council. The first mission of the ladies was a request from Harry Storey to help decorate for the pot luck dessert following the Light Up for Christ ceremony (see page 1). We will also take part in World Marriage Day festivities on February 11 and the confirmation class retreat on January 14. The following committees were decided on and chairs appointed: Hospitality Maureen Morel and Laura Mimms Membership Penni James Sunshine Committee Jan Storey Web Site Committee Penni James and Laura Mimms At our next meeting on January 8 we will be making Rosaries, which will fulfill all three of our goals - Faith, Fellowship and Service! Shirley Sammons will provide the materials. Suggestions for future meetings can be given to Diane Poston. As support for Vision Food share, everyone brought a canned food item to be donated. We will continue to do this at every meeting, so purchase an extra can or two. Throughout the year, we will be contacting other All Saints organizations to see how we may lend a hand. 16 The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 16 ANDERSON REVEALS ACTION PLAN FOR 2007 Will accomplish in the future. The supreme knight said that taking a more businesslike approach to growing the Knights does not overshadow what the Order offers eligible Catholic men. The action plan for 2007 includes an 'In Solidarity With Our Priests' membership campaign and activities tied to the 125th anniversary of the Order. The leadership of the Knights of Columbus met in Atlanta Nov to assess the Order s progress in meeting its goals for the fraternal year. Membership and new council growth remain priorities for extending the Knights outreach to more parishes, communities and ethnic groups. These efforts are being enhanced with strategic growth goals for each jurisdiction and an action plan to reach those goals. Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson told state deputies that in his experience he had not found an organization better suited to grow with the Church and meet its needs at every level than the Knights of Columbus. We are a fantastic, growing, productive and relevant organization, he said. We are standing shoulder to shoulder with our Holy Father, with our bishops and with our priests. The supreme knight announced that beginning in 2007, recruitment programs and degrees will be tied to the In Solidarity with Our Priests theme to strengthen further the Order s ties to parish life and to K of C chaplains and pastors. The Holy Father, our bishops and our priests know that in the Knights they will often find the money and material they need for their programs. Through this In Solidarity With Our Priests effort, we are telling them that they also have 1.7 million faithful, loyal men to stand with them. That is a great spiritual gift to them, Anderson added. The supreme knight told the state deputies that they and their leadership teams must look at concrete ways to formalize membership growth in their jurisdictions. Membership growth is the bloodline, the pulse of everything we do and everything we are, Anderson said. Strategic growth goals have to be tied to the real growth the Church is experiencing in nearly every U.S. state and Canadian province, as well as in Mexico and the Philippines. Even in those states where the Church is not growing as rapidly, there are Catholic men who need to be asked to join the Knights and former members who need to be asked to give us another look, Anderson said. The bottom line is this: We need to keep pace with the Church s growth, he said. We should be growing as fast, or even faster, than the rate of growth of the general Catholic population; that s our potential. Anderson also told the state deputies that the Order was looking forward to next March s 125th anniversary. Every single jurisdiction has a proud history and a great record of accomplishment. But it's only the foundation for what we - continued next column - We have a great vocation as Knights, but we have an even greater responsibility to share that vocation with other Catholic men through our principles of charity, unity and fraternity, Anderson said. With the Order set to celebrate its 125th anniversary next March 29, Supreme Knight Anderson urged the state deputies to lay the foundation for spectacular growth over the next 10 years. Our first brother Knights put their confidence in Father McGivney. We must remain confident in his vision and strong in our determination to realize the potential of the Order, Anderson said. - Reprinted from $1 BILLION CHALLENGE During Calendar year 2007 the Knights of Columbus will celebrate the 125 th anniversary of the founding of our Order. The Supreme Council will suggest many ways for our state jurisdictions and local councils to celebrate. At the recently completed Mid-Year Meeting for the Texas State Council I asked the state leadership to try and achieve a remarkable goal in honor of the vision of our founder. I asked them to help Texas increase the insurance members of our Order by $1 billion! Now I'm asking you for your help to reach this goal. Texas has 42% of our 85,000 members as insurance members of the Order. Texas is also the leading jurisdiction in the Order with more than $4.4 billion of life insurance in force. Our challenge in 2007, the 125 th anniversary of our Order, is to increase that amount to $5.4 million in Texas. We have eight of the best and brightest general insurance agents in the Order. If each of them can add $125 million of life insurance in force next year we will reach our goal of $1 billion. But they cannot accomplish this goal alone. We must create an atmosphere in our districts and in our councils that promotes a "fierce loyalty" by our brother knights toward Knights of Columbus insurance products. Remember, it is the excess earnings of those insurance products that provide the funds for much of the charity we give. $1.6 million to the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, $10 million for disaster relief for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, $2 million for scholarships and grants to seminarians, plus funds for Special Olympics, Birth Right and other prolife causes, and $80 million for construction loans to Catholic Churches and schools. Make time for your general of field to take care of your financial future and that of your family. No other state in the Order would dare to try and increase their insurance holdings by $1 billion in a single year. Texas is the only jurisdiction that could even think of getting this done. Will you help Texas reach this goal? I'm counting on you. Ron Gay Supreme Director
