1 November 2016 News from Court Street United Methodist Church On the Go! Chimes The The mission of Court Street UMC is to be a welcoming, nurturing, serving community of Christ. The LORD had said to Abram, Go from your country, your people and your father s household to the land I will show you. Genesis 12:1 The word GO is an action word, a verb for sure. God called Abram at the ripe young age of seventy-five years, told him to leave the familiar, and journey with me to the unfamiliar. That can be scary and, at best, risky from our (human) limited perspective. Genesis 12:4 states that, So Abram went, as the Lord had told him. However I hasten to put God s request in context; For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. 1 Yes, God has an ultimate plan and we are not always enlightened with the details therefore we must trust God. I believe that is what we have been doing together for five plus years. God is in the driver seat and we are passengers and sometimes unruly passengers, i.e. are we there yet? God wants to show us a better way to be and to live. We need to keep our eyes open during the journey which God is leading us on. We are traversing toward a future with hope. Jesus reminds us and the disciples what the mission of the church is, 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. 2 The people of God are on the go! We need to bring people along side us on this awesome journey with God. Jesus made it possible for us to do the impossible because we have this personal guide the Holy Spirit, who leads, comforts, teaches, and empowers us. I pray we will continue this God-initiated journey until we reach our heavenly home. Amen. Grace, Pastor Cal Jeremiah 29:11 NRSV Matthew 28:19-20 NRSV

And, you know how those pesky mittens seem to get lost so easily. Let s all do what we can to keep away the cold. Thank you for your continued support for the kids! Food Fun Fellowship Update The last gathering of the Food, Fun, Fellowship group was on Oct. 6th and it was the last meeting of the year. But don t be sad and shed a tear, we ll re-start again April 6th of next year! The reasoning for this decision was, first of all, the uncertainty of Northern Illinois weather. We don t want to take a chance on people struggling to get here or falling along the way. Then there are a few of the regulars who will soon be leaving us for warmer temps. (the lucky ones). It s also very difficult to plan and cook food when no one may be able to come. All in all, it seemed the wisest and most prudent thing to simply wait until spring. In the meantime, you will have time to think of ways to make it better for you and what you would like to see added to the Fun and Fellowship parts. This last FFF we had several winners in Bingo, a couple of games going, and we can t forget the hot cribbage contest each month. Then as an added activity, almost everyone made a bird feeder. We provided the materials pine cones, peanut butter, seeds and red yarn to tie them in the trees. They were really cute and easy to make. I m sure the birds will love them. Give someone on the Ad Hoc Committee your thoughts and ideas so we can try to incorporate them into the new start time (April 6, 2017). Ad Hoc Com. members - - Jeanine Wang, Diane Lutmer, Carol Scott, Teresa Field, Diane Risley, Nancy Shindel and Geri Ryan. There will be a short meeting about the Garden Bazaar 2016 in the dining room on November 20th after church. Please bring suggestions and concerns on how to improve this annual event. 3 November 2016 COURT STREET TO PARTICIPATE IN LOVE ROCKFORD EVENT APRIL 29th, 2017 Jeremiah Development, along with many community partners, is hosting the first LOVE ROCKFORD event, on April 29, As you are aware, Jeremiah Development is a community and church based organization committed to the simple mission of promoting the well-being of the neighborhood in the downtown area, by working closely with local residents. Although Jeremiah Development s focus is the west-side downtown neighborhood, the decision was made to extend the boundaries to embrace the entire city for this event. LOVE ROCKFORD will be housed in the center of Rockford at the JD churches of Emmanuel Episcopal, Second First Church, and Court Street UMC. The purpose of this event is to link available resources to those in need in the Rockford community. Congregations, businesses, community agencies, and volunteers will be working together to reach out to the underserved. Residents will have the opportunity to be linked with a variety of counseling and housing services. Medical volunteers will be present to provide blood pressure checks, hearing and vision tests, as well as other services. Residents may choose to have a haircut or receive a manicure, while the young may opt for face painting or to engage in other children s activities. A free lunch will be served, and a box of food will be available to take home. Residents will be able to shop in the clothing room and bookstore for themselves and their family. Bicycles will be repaired and music will engage the crowds. Also, those seeking spiritual renewal will have an opportunity to receive prayers and blessings. We wanted you to be aware of this exciting event, and will bring you updates through the next several months. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to talk with Joan Tunnell, Jeanine Wang, or Pastor Cal. What s something that many of us do in the Fall and Spring? That s right! We clean out our closets, looking for items that are too big (or too small) or are out of date. Finally there s a place for your gently used clothing that will help people all over the community. During Love Rockford, an event of Jeremiah Development, gently used clothing of all types and sizes, men s women s children s, will be given away to under-served people of our community. We will take casual and professional clothing, outerwear, shoes, just about anything that you may have. Please box your items and be sure that items donated are in good condition and are clean. You may bring items to Court Street from now until mid-april to Room 109. You will be helping many others in the Rockford community, in addition to yourself. Thank you! Holy COW! We are gearing up for our 35th Thanksgiving Dinner for anyone who needs a dinner or does not want to eat alone. For 34 years this mission has welcomed and fed our neighbors because we want to express our thanks and gratitude to God for a good year of health and bounty. With your help, we can extend our arms and expand our love to include everyone. Become part of our Thanksgiving Family by: Volunteering in the kitchen to help with food preparation on Monday (Nov. 21), Tuesday (Nov. 22), or Wednesday (11/23). Or help on Thanksgiving Day (11/24) by helping to serve, work at the take-out window, or cleaning up after the dinner. You can also help us finish the clean up on Friday (11/25). Contributing pie(s) for our Thanksgiving Dinner. Because health regulations prohibit homemade pies, you would need to purchase any pie you donate. If you would rather contribute money, you may make your check payable to Court St. UMC, with the memo marked Thanksgiving Dinner, and turn in to the office or drop in the offering plate on Sunday. Praying that all people will experience comfort and fellowship on Thanksgiving Day. Call Nancy Stanis ( ) NOW -- people call in EARLY to schedule when they are able to help because they want to give back to the community and ensure the spot they want. I want to thank everyone for all the meals, cards, phone calls, and prayers during both of my surgeries. All of you helped me so much. I am so blessed to have a wonderful church family. God loves you and so do I. Annette Gillette

5 November 2016 Memorial Luncheon - Nov. 2nd, 2016 Sponsored by United Methodist Women (U.M.W.) The heading, as you will notice, is different from the usual. That is because we will once again open the luncheon and service to all, men and women, who wish to honor a loved one who has passed on since our last All Saints Day. We did this last year and several men attended with the names of loved ones who were lifted up. They do not have to belong to this church. If you would like to come to this Memorial Luncheon and/or have a person to honor, call me with that name to be read. Or if you prefer to come and only name that person wordlessly in your heart, that is fine also. I do need all reservations (and names to be honored) by the end of the day Oct 30th. The cost for lunch is still only $7.00. To the ladies of the church family, please remember that all of you are welcome as are the guests you wish to bring with you. United Methodist Women December 2016 Events Even though it seems too early to plan for December, time seems to fly when it becomes fall. If you are interested in having a table for your items to sell, please let me know as soon as you can. We don t want anyone to be left out for the lack of a table. If you are donating bakery goods, they need to be at the church office on Friday the 2nd or 9:00 AM to noon on Saturday the 3rd in the dining room downstairs. December 7th (Wednesday) is the U.M.W. Christmas Dinner at 12:30 immediately following the noon Advent service in the Chapel. You are invited to come to the Advent Worship service at noon and stay for lunch. But, as usual, please call me with your reservation by Dec. 5th at the latest. I want to have enough food to serve but not to waste. Remember ladies, all are welcome- - - church family and friends. 7 November is National COPD awareness month. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive chronic long-term lung disease. This disease affects more than 11 million Americans and is the third leading cause of death in the United States. COPD can cause serious longterm disability and early death. There is no cure for COPD and once damage to the lungs has happened, it cannot be reversed. However, COPD is often preventable and treatable. COPD is sometimes referred to as Chronic bronchitis or emphysema. The airways in one s lungs become inflamed and thickened with COPD. Airways and air sacs lose their elastic quality, lung tissue gets destroyed, and too much mucus is made and blocks (obstructs) airways. This is how COPD affects the lungs leading to one feeling short of breath. This shortness of breath affects all aspects of one s quality of life. Early detection of COPD is key to a successful treatment plan. Many of us don t recognize the symptoms of COPD until the later stages of the disease. People will sometimes think they are short of breath or are less able to do their normal activities because they are just getting older. Shortness of breath is never normal. If you have a chronic cough, shortness November 2016 Health & Wellness Updates From our Parish Nurse... of breath while doing everyday activities, frequent respiratory infections, fatigue, producing a lot of mucus, wheezing, blueness of the lips or fingernails, seek medical advice. Tips for keeping your lungs healthy: DON T SMOKE. Cigarette smoking is the major cause of lung cancer and COPD. It causes chronic inflammation, and over time, cigarette smoke destroys lung tissue. If you smoke, it s never too late to seek help and benefit from stopping. AVOID EXPOSURE TO POLLUTANTS. Second hand smoke, outdoor air pollution, chemicals in the home and workplace can cause or worsen lung disease. Test your home for radon. Radon is a cancer causing radioactive gas. You cannot see, smell, or taste radon, but it may be a problem in your home. Testing is the only way to know your home levels and to reduce the levels to acceptable ranges. The Surgeon General warns that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. PREVENT INFECTION. A cold or other respiratory infections can sometimes become very serious. Wash your hands often with soap and water. Avoid crowds during the cold and flu season. Get vaccinated every year against influenza. Talk to your healthcare provider to find out if the pneumonia vaccine is right for you. If you get sick, try to keep it to yourself. Protect the people around you by keeping your distance. Stay home from work or school until you re feeling better. If you or a loved one is diagnosed with COPD, there are steps to take in order to cope with lifestyle changes. Each person s COPD is different, and good communication with healthcare providers will be key as one learns to live with this disease. A variety of medicines are used, and there is no best medicine for all people. There are also different breathing techniques and exercises to help relax your airways. Pulmonary rehabilitation classes can help provide support and tips for breathing. Not only are there physical challenges, but there are emotional challenges as well. Finding a social support group often improves quality of life. The Lung Association caregiving community is a free and simple way families can receive help. No one needs to feel alone or isolated. It is good to talk with others who understand and surround yourself with people who make a positive impact on your health. There are Better Breathers Clubs (call LungUSA for details) that meet regularly and feature education on a wide range of relevant topics. The Winnebago County Health Department will offer flu vaccines on Sunday, Nov. 6th, after worship, from 11:00am - 12:30pm. They will have the high dose for people over the age of sixty-five ($62) and the regular dose ($39), as well as the preservative free. Remember to bring your Medicare and supplemental insurance card with you and/or your checkbook.
